This is a nice little hotel near the beach with a couple of floors and some pretty basic rooms. We had a Junior Suite, with a spacious king bed in one part of the room and a double in the other room. The floors weren't especially clean, but that is to be expected with the close proximity to the beach...

The only good thing about the Hotel California is James at the front desk. Yes it's a block from the beach out the back gate. It is also close to the pier packed with tourists and plenty of homeless people. The bike path is nice but really crowded right there. The front of the hotel is on a busy street...

The place was cozy and the staff friendly(AAron & James) with easy beach access. The only draw back was the cost. This place does not offer the fair value needed to justify to cost. Any rate over $125.00 is over priced.

We had a basic room, which was super fun with music posters and such. Rugged and clean. Old school charm. We really liked it. I'd definitely stay again. The location is fantastic with a beach walk in the back and Chez Jay across the street, pier nearby.

We loved the position of the hotel. You could walk everywhere. The staff especially James and Carter were both great and very helpful. We had a room on the first floor that was right down the end and was the only room with a view of the beach...how lucky. The rates are reasonable so if you are travelling on a...

I enjoyed my stay at the Hotel California. It is in a convenient location, and the staff was great. My room was clean, but the heat/furnace definitely needs to be updated. It is difficult to turn on and off (you have to manually do it), and it would be pretty cold in the mornings (I stayed in February). Otherwise, I...

Hotel California is a very cozy hotel with a very friendly staff on a great location. The hotel is totally different from the major mainstream hotels down the road. We stayed a family of four in a spacious two room family room with a small balcony. The room was away from the street and real close to the beach. We...

This vintage 1948 hotel offers great rates for this pricey area--considering its steps-from-the-beach location, very near the bustling Santa Monica Pier. A charming garden path leads down steps to the beachfront. Our second floor, street-view room was quite small, but was sooo Rt. 66--decorated with fun surfing and movie memorabilia. The bath was small and lacked a vent, but had...

I enjoyed my stay here. The staff were always friendly, the hotel was very pretty, and close to the beach. There's free tea and coffee, and hot chocolate, in the foyer at all times, and fruit too (bananas every say I was there). There's no breakfast. There are many pretty outdoor seating areas, and you may well see a hummingbird.

Our stay at The Hotel California was fantastic, It is so nice to see a little bit of yesteryear being preserved with the Surfboard bed heads and guitars on the walls adding a really cool touch. A big thanks to Carter & Kurtis for their warm welcome and sharing of knowledge on all things local especially a couple of nearby...

We are so ecstatic that you loved The Hotel California! A major goal of ours is to keep the beach, and nostalgic LA vibe. A lot of that has been lost in Los Angeles, but we are on a mission to keep it alive. Our staff (Carter & Kurtis + the others) are dedicated to making each and every guest's...

Staying in Santa Monica

Neighbourhood Profile
Santa Monica
Santa Monica is a coastal town that maintains a balance as a tourist destination and as an area with a thriving local culture. On the beach, bikers, roller-bladers, runners and walkers move along the famed bike path enjoying the beautiful Los Angeles weather. The solar-powered Ferris wheel at the Santa Monica pier spins high above the water, while park revelers scream with delight riding the roller coaster. Inland from the beach, Third Street Promenade bustles with shoppers and street performers, where every block seems to have a musical or acrobatic act drawing crowds giving Santa Monica both the feeling of a laid-back beach town and a major commercial hub.
