In Jan room was very cold. No xtra blankets, one guest said he found a space heater in closet, we had none. Nice historic hotel with squeaky floors in dining room/bar area. Nice decor. Not much in the breakfast inclusion. No coffee and no staff maintaining the included breakfast. May try again in warmer weather.
We enjoyed our stay. It's kept it's historic charm but the rooms have just enough modernization to be comfortable. The bathroom was a real surprise and and clean. The lobby has the feel of the time period. The beds were quite comfortable and the rooms are large. Pets are more than welcome too! There's also supposed to be a ghost named Julia who walks the halls which made it fun! The breakfast was all self serve, including making the coffee so be sure to hit the start buttons right away in the morning. There's no staff to help before 10 am!
If the historic Old West is what you are looking for this is certainly the place for you. If you are looking for a comfortable, quiet night's sleep, find another hotel. We arrived after a long day's drive and the bed was uncomfortable and there was way too much road noise. The breakfast was severely lacking.
Ok, I didn't stay here, but my mom and her husband did over the previous two nights. From the lobby to the bar to the room, this place is just fantastic. As much as I love the consistency of Hilton properties, it's a blast to find a locally owned one with its own particular and charming character. The owner was welcoming and interesting as well. The place is supposedly haunted, but I didn't see anything. Sadly. Maybe another time. Well, I would never hesitate to recommend this place to anyone. Also, everything looked immaculate. Always critical. So, add charm and cleanliness and character--what more could you want?
I decided to treat myself to a historic hotel visit on my one-night stop driving between Durango and Boulder. Years ago I'd been to a Sunday brunch with friends at the historic Fairplay Inn, so I decided to stop there. Well, things have changed. It's definitely vintage. Everything is period...from furnishing to technology. And the dining room is no longer serving (at least in winter). It's been turned into a bar with loud, live music long into the night. Needless to say, not a quiet or comfortable night's sleep. However the staff, from Justin at the front desk or Ingrid in housekeeping, couldn't have been nicer or gone more out of their way to make my stay comfortable and enjoyable. All in all, a mixed review. Decide what you want out of your stay before going there.
