We visited The Residence Falhumaafushi from May 2-12. Weather was not our friend from the get-go! Because of bad storms in Chicago, we missed our flight to Doha and then on to Male and had to reschedule for the following day, thus missing one day at the resort. Obviously, this was not the resort's fault, and they answered immediately when I emailed them that we would not be arriving in Male on May 1, and they re-scheduled our flight from Male to Kooddoo Island (albeit with a charge for rescheduling). We flew Qatar Airways and upgraded to business class with a QSuite, and I'd highly recommend this if it's in your budget. We were frazzled from having to spend the night in the ticketing area of Terminal 5 at O'Hare, but once we boarded our 14 hour flight to Doha, we were pampered. A business class ticket allows you to use the premium lounge in Doha, and we took advantage of it, even taking showers. It was heavenly after a harrying start to our holiday. In Male, a representative from The Residence found us, and since we hadn't had to wait for luggage (we only travel with carry-ons), he was able to get us onto an earlier flight to Kooddoo Island. The whole experience was stress-free, and I commend the resort for making it so easy. We were sent to the transit lounge to await our flight, but that was only about 15 minutes, and then we were on our way. The flight to Kooddoo is about an hour, and as I mentioned at the start, weather was not our friend. It was pouring down rain when we boarded our speed boat to the resort. Again, obviously not the resort's fault, just another inconvenience. Umbrellas were provided and we disembarked at the sister island of Dhigurah and were taken by buggy to check in at Falhumaafushi. Laia (apologies for the misspelling) drove us and checked us in. Throughout our stay, this young Catalan woman was so helpful. She suggested that we have lunch in the Dining Room before going to our water pool villa. More about the food later, but afterwards, a buggy took us to our villa, and even though it was still raining, it was lovely to have such a beautiful view of the water. We had scheduled the Dolphin Cruise for that evening, but it was cancelled because of weather. The 9 days we were there, no Dolphin Cruise was able to go out because of rough winds, so it was disappointing to miss that. We had booked a pool water villa mainly for the fact that we could snorkel right from our villa, but with strong winds and currents the whole 9 days, we were only able to get in the water for short times and not swim very far out because of the danger of currents. This was a huge disappointment, but as mentioned, it was not the fault of the resort. The "Reef Orientation" snorkel experiences were cancelled every day for the same reason. Our only option was to make the best of a not-so-great situation, and we tried to do so. Luckily the other experiences that we had booked (they were included in our booking from TravelZoo) were not cancelled. We had lovely massages in the spa, and the Earth Basket garden tour and cooking class. I'd highly recommend this. We had so much fun helping the chef prepare a salad, a delicious tuna curry, and a dessert. I'm a gardener, so I really loved seeing the produce they grow on the resort. The sous chef knew I gardened, so he picked some peppers for me and told me how to let them dry out and plant the seeds when I returned home. Unfortunately, the cleaning person threw them out (not his fault--they were wrapped in a napkin and thus looked like trash). In hindsight, I doubt that I could have legally brought them back through customs, but I still missed having those seeds! As others have mentioned, bikes are provided for each villa. I was unable to use them because of knee osteoarthritis, so we walked when we could and called for buggies at times. We never had to wait more than 10 minutes for a buggy, and the buggy drivers were all so friendly. In fact, everyone at the whole resort is friendly, and they always make the time to say hello. We always tipped the room cleaners, the mini-bar guy, and at each meal. Such hard-working and friendly employees deserve tips, in my opinion. We had upgraded to the Standard All Inclusive package, and we're glad that we did. We ate at the Dining Room on both islands, and the food was fantastic. Every morning we were seated by Shina, a lovely young woman who took care of us and remembered our drink orders. My personal favorite was the Singapore Chili Crab, and I had it twice. Once the chef of the Dining Room came out to talk to us and was surprised that we like spicy foods (I'm Cajun...it's in my blood). We ate at the beach club of both islands, and loved everything we tried. We ate at Falhumaa (the French restaurant) twice and Li Bai (Italian) twice. A good hint I read on TripAdvisor: email the resort ahead of time to schedule. They made reservations for us with no problems. They did this also for the Earth Basket experience, the massages, and the (ill-fated) Dolphin Tour. The water pool villa was just beautiful. Even though we couldn't snorkel much because of strong winds and currents, we did see fish just sitting on our deck--baby sharks, rays, needle fish, and other tropicals. The entrance to the villa was through the living room, and we didn't use that room much. There are pocket doors to the bedroom which is lovely, with a huge bed facing the ocean and lots of storage. The bathroom is very big, with a vanity with double sinks, a soaking tub, and a spacious shower with an adjoining outdoor shower. That shower has a clothes line in it, which is great for hanging wet stuff. It was great to have the facilities on both islands open to us. Falhumaafushi is relatively compact, but Dhigurah is huge. The bridge connecting the two islands is just great, and we walked it and took the buggies across. Everyone is so friendly, and they are committed to making sure your holiday is perfect. I'd highly recommend The Residence.…
We’ve been to some great hotels over the years and the Residence Maldives is certainly up there so much so that this is the first review I’ve written whilst still on vacation. The internal flight and speedboat was straight forward with residence staff on hand all the way. Check in was a breeze. Travelling around both islands is fun on the bikes and buggies always available when you don’t fancy the cycle. Availability of restaurants is good and the fine dining options are a class above. Quality of food is great. The beach bar is our favourite haunt and the cocktails on offer is extensive and good quality. Mounesh, Deepak, Raja etc. are always on hand and nothing is too much trouble. We also enjoyed the ‘Just the two of us’ package at the spa which was excellent. Mia and Sungay were so professional and we walked out of there so relaxed. Highly recommended. Snorkelling from the beach is great too. Within our first few days we seen turtles, black tip sharks and also a leopard shark (very lucky). We will be sad to leave this gem of a place.…
Very good experiencie but missing much more luxury! Missing food alternatives, quality and variety. Also I think that onto the rooms and restaurants could be more sorprised and impressive: example, with floor windows seeing the sea onto the room, restaurants… use the water as a floor o to be more in contact with the island or the sea animals to achieve a hotel more exclusive and atractive
lovely hotel, very friendly staff, good food and relaxing atmosphere good sports activities, nice reef and its really nice to have a bicycle to be used between the two islands. it's great to be able to use all facilities on both islands which makes the stay even more attractive
