Funky beach hotel has a great location but could use a facelift and thorough cleaning!
Beds are full sized and soft; bathrooms have super low counters that are back breakers for those over 5’4”. Overall cleanliness is sub standard. Sliders in our room were covered in icky kid handprints, floor dirty, tub hairy. The balcony is a blessing as is the short hike to the beach. Ok for a camping style overnight

Great location right on the beach. The rooms were clean and cute, very retro, which is kind of Treasure Islands thing. The staff was lovely and friendly, we had a problem with our room and they moved us right away. It's a mom and pop so it is older but that's part of the charm. Nice pool, lots of recreation like badminton, and ping pong. Beach towels available if you need them. And the price is absolutely right!

I stayed at The Sands 2 nights 02-15 to 02-17-2018 in room 211 and enjoyed the historic motel and location and I would go back. However, it's not going to be for everyone. It does have some issues that would be bad for some.

This is a vintage/retro/old motel. It is the first concrete building and first motel built in Treasure Island. Built in 1947....every motel, condo, hotel, shop, etc that you see along that strip came after this motel. It is in the shape of an " H " with the original rooms in two parallel single story rows perpendicular to the beach, separated by a nice grassy courtyard and pool. The cross bar of the "H" was added a little later and is a 2nd story as are 4 more 2nd story rooms added on at the foot of the "H" by the beach. Room 211 is one of these and is a direct ocean front room with balcony.

The room is quite large with large windows facing the beach and side so you have quite a view. This room, probably added in the 1950's has the quirks that you should expect from vintage motels. The bathroom is quite small, containing the toilet and tub, however, the sink and mirror is in a very large vanity or alcove. There were 2 beds, a 4 person table, and 2 chairs and a small table, plus bedside table....and there was still plenty of room. There is, at the moment, a built in modular enamel kitchen set up...of 3 burner range, sink, small oven, and refrigerator...all one piece vintage 1950's probably. The old built in fridge sadly no longer works and is gutted, there is a dorm room style modern fridge with microwave sitting on top. The balcony is small and shared with the neighboring room, but is big enough you're not crowded and can enjoy it.

The pool looked very clean and I saw a lift chair for it. I saw a few, at least 2 small grills, and one really large one in the common area. There are 4 shuffleboard courts as well. There are tables and chairs and loungers scattered about the common area. Wifi worked ok in common area, but was very weak in room 211 up on the 2nd floor by the beach.

The motel, and this is a motel not a hotel, know the difference, is oceanfront. The name "The Sands" is very appropriate as this is on the widest section of a wide beach. Behind the motel is a very nice paved pedestrian/bike path then the beach. The beach is several hundred yards wide or deep, so the ocean is quite a ways from the motel. It's neither bad or good, just something to be aware of.

Parking is great overall, but quirky. There are very limited spaces in front of the Motel, however, across the street and just behind the buildings there The Sands has a 1950's era private covered parking facility. It's about a block away including the crossing of the street from the motel. I'd recommend parking there if you are able to walk and leave the motel front parking open for the elderly or infirm guests.

The quirks, besides the parking and very wide beach, will include 1940's architecture and the fact that this motel was owned by the same family from 1947 to 2017.....just sold last year. Normally, that might be a bad thing, but that family in the latter decades apparently didn't do much in major upkeep. They built another motel, The Surf in the 1950's, and it was probably the most stunning 1950's style motel on the beach....it was so run down supposedly that when they sold it in 2004 it was demolished despite great public outcry. There's a dreadful boring out of place tomato colored condo/hotel there now. Fortunately, The Sands was in better shape. However, it's not completely renovated yet. My room was not renovated and while I liked it, some people would see that modular sink/stove/fridge enameled unit with chips and old faucets, etc. and not understanding the history of the place and how it got to be how it is be unhappy. This is a great old place that was allowed to get a bit more rundown through possibly benign neglect than it should have. Also it is a motel.....not a hotel....even when all the rooms are fully refurbished it will still be from a bygone age.

I enjoy the time travel of these older places and have no desire to stay in a high or mid-rise Marriott/Hilton box where you have 8 times the people using a pool the same size as this little place. Know what you're booking. I did see a small crew changing out/working on a room and it looks like they're keeping it in a simple/retro style. Remember this is a place that at least in winter draws a largely elderly crowd and has for decades. Some of them I overheard have been coming for more than 30 years. Hopefully, the new owners will keep it simple and affordable for them. It was never intended to be fancy or luxurious.

The location is great as the beach is right there and the paved mile long pathway behind the motel leads past other vintage motels. Some of them have small bars or cafes open to the public. There's also a Sloppy Joe's bar and grill in one of them. It would be possible if you're only there for a few days like me, to not use your car at all. Other restaurants/bars are also within a mile on or just off Gulf Blvd.

Overall, an interesting old place. Until refurbished it might be a little more rough than some of the other neighboring properties, but I found my room to be clean, bright, cheery, and actually affordable. Half or almost half the cost of a nearby brand name modern hotel.....who's pool was no bigger than the Sand's. I'd stay here again.....renovated or unrenovated room. It was nice to step back to 1947.

The sands is a cute retro style hotel, great location and clean rooms. We had booked 2 balcony rooms 11 months prior to our stay . When we checked in I paid for 2 balcony rooms, however when we went to our rooms only 1 was a balcony room ( there is about a $40 price difference between the 2 rooms according to their website) I tried to fix this 3 times while there with 3 different people all saying I should be refunded the difference but the had to have the boss call me. We never heard from anyone. Once we were home I tried to call and email to fix this situation and still no response back. I would have stayed here again and recommend this place, but their disregard to their guest once they have paid will not make me want to go back.

No parking at all 1 handicap spot and my husband is disabled had to park across the street about a block down. I have never had to park that far away from hotel. Room was very dated dirty curtains were not even all hung on windows. Door barely locked no hand soap to wash your hands bugs in bathroom. I couldn’t wait for the next day to checkout.

This is the third time I've stayed here and after the last time we said we wouldn't stay again because the rooms were run down. When we saw that it had been remodeled we decided to go ahead and give it a try again because we love the exterior and location. Unfortunately, the remodel is barely cosmetic. When we arrived the toilet wasn't working and it wasn't clean. The bedspread was also dirty. The cleaning staff came right away to fix it and they were really friendly, which was a bright spot. When we returned from our dinner out, we found there was no remote control for the bedroom TV. In the morning, the hot water heater was broken and we couldn't take showers before checking out. When I went to the office to discuss it with the manager the answer I got was 'shes on her way' and if we left then she would call us. We never received a call back to address the issues and a follow-up email I wrote has never been answered. We will not stay here again.

We arrived at the motel on a Saturday afternoon. We got our keys for the room and they wouldn’t unlock the door. Maintenance came put oil in the lock giggled the lock for a bit then he used his master key. After giggling the lock it came open. I said that it was unacceptable especially getting oil over my hands from the key. They said they would replace the lock on Monday two days from now. The front hotel staff said they have been having problems with the lock some time, really, replace the lock you idiots. The furniture in the place was awe full. The stove was rusted and inside the cabinets it was gross. We wouldn’t stay here for anything. Found a Marriot two doors down booked there for $1200 more for the week. Our friends stayed at the Sands but they had them put bed sheets over the furniture. We travel plenty and found this place to be the worst that one could possibly find. Avoid at all costs. Across the street and next door are way better than this trash. I don’t think by the looks of it that they keep up on it. You can see under the door a good place bugs can get in.

On the plus side, people running the place were really nice, and the atmosphere very relaxed. Access to the beach was great, but quite a walk.

Now the the “resort”. It was filthy! Both bathroom and kitchen were just gross! The pots and dishes were filthy from previous tenants. Same for sinks tub, and toilet! Nothing was anywhere near the currently expected Covid cleanliness.

The pool was green and cloudy..... again, filthy and not in anyway safe.

This early 1960s style of efficiencys and suites is far below today’s standards. It is very run down....

*BEWARE* Do not make the same mistake our family did. We spent hundreds of dollars on 3 rooms hoping to jump start our vacation. When we arrived we instantly knew we had problems. The place in no way advertised on Hotels.com looked like the hotel we found. They had the location advertised as Handicap friendly. There was ONE handicap space and very limited parking. You have to drive a block down from them to access the overage parking lot. You don't know if it is safe to leave your vehicle unattended. You don't know what you will encounter walking to and from the hotel. We checked in and received a room key. The lady who checked us in was polite, nice and doing her job. After receiving the key we went to look at the rooms. NIGHTMARE. The rooms smelt musty, mildew and everything was sticky. Stains everywhere on everything. Bed had holes and stains. There was leftover clothes in a pillowcase left in the room. This gave me an idea how they clean here. The hotels exterior needs a major upgrade. Run down and not well kept. We couldn't stay. Especially with having parents with handicaps that need to stay close for walkers and easy access to our vehicles in case of a blood sugar emergency. I can't believe this place is asking for anything more than $30 a night. Just because you are located on the beach front doesn't mean you completely not upkeep or update your property. I kindly returned the key to the front lady. She again was very nice and I feel embarrassed for her because I know she may have to deal with this kind of reactions from guests. We lost the money to the rooms but I'd rather sleep in our vehicles before I lay my head at the Sands. Pay the extra money and stay somewhere else. Don't make the same mistake we made.

We spent 2 nights here which were 2 nights too long! The motel is so old that our door was still an old wood door, no security chain, crack through the middle, glass above the door broken. Bathtub was DISGUSTING! The only positive was there were no bugs seen. The pool was under construction. Construction guys yelling outside started each day around 8. On our last day they were using a chopsaw to cut concrete/tile of the empty and under renovation pool at 9 am!! Spoke with someone in a first level room who thought the floors were moving under their feet! I certainly do not have high standards- but this was the worst MOTEL I have stayed in. Should not show up under the hotel search category!! Don’t believe the pics that are in the ad- they are taken at angles that make it look fine.

The Sands doesn't rent them though, other lodging locations do, as well as independent rental companies. You could always call the motel and ask if there is an independent renter close by because I don't recall seeing any in this area. Shell Island Preserve Park (about 20min away) has them and I believe the one time I've ever done that it was $45/day. TS is correct, it's a hefty/long walk from almost any hotel to the actual water. Sunburst Inn in Indian Rocks Beach, right up the road, has umbrellas and lounge chairs you can use, on the beach, no extra charge for them. If they're booked solid you'll have to do an "early bird gets the worm" kind of thing but we've stayed there too.
