Beds are full sized and soft; bathrooms have super low counters that are back breakers for those over 5’4”. Overall cleanliness is sub standard. Sliders in our room were covered in icky kid handprints, floor dirty, tub hairy. The balcony is a blessing as is the short hike to the beach. Ok for a camping style overnight
This is a vintage/retro/old motel. It is the first concrete building and first motel built in Treasure Island. Built in 1947....every motel, condo, hotel, shop, etc that you see along that strip came after this motel. It is in the shape of an " H " with the original rooms in two parallel single story rows perpendicular to the beach, separated by a nice grassy courtyard and pool. The cross bar of the "H" was added a little later and is a 2nd story as are 4 more 2nd story rooms added on at the foot of the "H" by the beach. Room 211 is one of these and is a direct ocean front room with balcony.
The room is quite large with large windows facing the beach and side so you have quite a view. This room, probably added in the 1950's has the quirks that you should expect from vintage motels. The bathroom is quite small, containing the toilet and tub, however, the sink and mirror is in a very large vanity or alcove. There were 2 beds, a 4 person table, and 2 chairs and a small table, plus bedside table....and there was still plenty of room. There is, at the moment, a built in modular enamel kitchen set up...of 3 burner range, sink, small oven, and refrigerator...all one piece vintage 1950's probably. The old built in fridge sadly no longer works and is gutted, there is a dorm room style modern fridge with microwave sitting on top. The balcony is small and shared with the neighboring room, but is big enough you're not crowded and can enjoy it.
The pool looked very clean and I saw a lift chair for it. I saw a few, at least 2 small grills, and one really large one in the common area. There are 4 shuffleboard courts as well. There are tables and chairs and loungers scattered about the common area. Wifi worked ok in common area, but was very weak in room 211 up on the 2nd floor by the beach.
The motel, and this is a motel not a hotel, know the difference, is oceanfront. The name "The Sands" is very appropriate as this is on the widest section of a wide beach. Behind the motel is a very nice paved pedestrian/bike path then the beach. The beach is several hundred yards wide or deep, so the ocean is quite a ways from the motel. It's neither bad or good, just something to be aware of.
Parking is great overall, but quirky. There are very limited spaces in front of the Motel, however, across the street and just behind the buildings there The Sands has a 1950's era private covered parking facility. It's about a block away including the crossing of the street from the motel. I'd recommend parking there if you are able to walk and leave the motel front parking open for the elderly or infirm guests.
The quirks, besides the parking and very wide beach, will include 1940's architecture and the fact that this motel was owned by the same family from 1947 to 2017.....just sold last year. Normally, that might be a bad thing, but that family in the latter decades apparently didn't do much in major upkeep. They built another motel, The Surf in the 1950's, and it was probably the most stunning 1950's style motel on the beach....it was so run down supposedly that when they sold it in 2004 it was demolished despite great public outcry. There's a dreadful boring out of place tomato colored condo/hotel there now. Fortunately, The Sands was in better shape. However, it's not completely renovated yet. My room was not renovated and while I liked it, some people would see that modular sink/stove/fridge enameled unit with chips and old faucets, etc. and not understanding the history of the place and how it got to be how it is be unhappy. This is a great old place that was allowed to get a bit more rundown through possibly benign neglect than it should have. Also it is a motel.....not a hotel....even when all the rooms are fully refurbished it will still be from a bygone age.
I enjoy the time travel of these older places and have no desire to stay in a high or mid-rise Marriott/Hilton box where you have 8 times the people using a pool the same size as this little place. Know what you're booking. I did see a small crew changing out/working on a room and it looks like they're keeping it in a simple/retro style. Remember this is a place that at least in winter draws a largely elderly crowd and has for decades. Some of them I overheard have been coming for more than 30 years. Hopefully, the new owners will keep it simple and affordable for them. It was never intended to be fancy or luxurious.
The location is great as the beach is right there and the paved mile long pathway behind the motel leads past other vintage motels. Some of them have small bars or cafes open to the public. There's also a Sloppy Joe's bar and grill in one of them. It would be possible if you're only there for a few days like me, to not use your car at all. Other restaurants/bars are also within a mile on or just off Gulf Blvd.
Overall, an interesting old place. Until refurbished it might be a little more rough than some of the other neighboring properties, but I found my room to be clean, bright, cheery, and actually affordable. Half or almost half the cost of a nearby brand name modern hotel.....who's pool was no bigger than the Sand's. I'd stay here again.....renovated or unrenovated room. It was nice to step back to 1947.
Now the the “resort”. It was filthy! Both bathroom and kitchen were just gross! The pots and dishes were filthy from previous tenants. Same for sinks tub, and toilet! Nothing was anywhere near the currently expected Covid cleanliness.
The pool was green and cloudy..... again, filthy and not in anyway safe.
This early 1960s style of efficiencys and suites is far below today’s standards. It is very run down....
