Thala Beach Nature Reserve could easily be overlooked because of its secluded location between Cairns and Port Douglas. Doing so and missing its eco lodge attributes and peaceful location would be a sad mistake. Prettejohn's vision behind his creation of Thala Beach Nature Reserve was masterful. We stayed for 6 nights and discovered there are subtle layers to the Reserve......

A secluded eco lodge with a relaxed vibe is a good summation of Thala Beach. We stayed here for four nights after spending the first three nights in Port Douglas. This allowed us to do all our exploring, reef tours etc on the first few days & then head to Thala to truly switch off. This is a real Queensland...

While there is disclosure about the irukandji stinger season it is difficult to manage the tropical heat and humidity without being able to have a swim on the private beach November through to May. For some a pool is just not the same though they had a nice walk in style Billabong pool and a plunge style pool further down...

We stayed at Thala for two nights and we could not fault our stay. The views are faultless, everywhere we went on the property was just stunning. We stayed in a Coral Sea Bungalow and I didn't want to shut the curtains, waking up and looking out to the ocean was perfect. The staff were on point, friendly and happy...

Stunning nature reserve and lovely tree houses. We stayed in cabin 10 last owing over the beach. Wonderful attentive caring staff. We felt right at home. It pained me to leave. We will definitely return.

Having been in Luxury Travel for over a decade and having stayed at some of the best hotels and resorts all over the world I'd have to say if someone can't enjoy their experience at Thala Beach there's something wrong with them. While not quite a 5 star property (nor does it suggest it is, i'd self rate it 4.5...

We think Thala Beach Nature Reserve represents the best of Australian tropical accommodation experiences on offer. Just look at the resort website to see the luxury rooms, restaurants and facilities all nestled in native forest on a private headland, about 25 minutes’ drive south along the coast from Port Douglas. What the website can’t show you properly is the quality...

We spent three nights at Thala and the service and food were excellent. We drove up from Cairns along the beautiful Captain Cook Highway. Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Thala Beach Nature Reserve is a family owned 58 hectare nature and wildlife reserve 15 minutes south of Port Douglas. Get there from Cairns via a spectacular 45 minute drive along Captain Cook Highway. Elevated on stilts, 83 eco designed timber bungalows are discretely concealed within the forest canopy, blending in with the natural environment and feature ocean, mountain or forest views. Panoramic views are enjoyed from open-sided Osprey's Restaurant across the forest canopy and beyond to the Coral Sea. Guests and visitors dine amongst birds in the surrounding treetops, whilst enjoying modern Australian cuisine with friendly and attentive service. Granite boulders, waterfalls and overhanging trees create natural swimming pools blending discretely within the environment. Paths wind through rainforests and woodlands, connecting with secluded coves and beaches, passing through habitats for endemic birds, wildlife and flora. Guests enjoy complimentary guided nature tours by onsite rangers including tree planting, stargazing at an outdoor observatory, beach discovery, wildlife walks and bird-watching tours.
