For is, the chance to spend 5 days of our honeymoon, at such a beautiful location, was planned to be an highlight, however, it was not. On arrival, reception were “matter of fact”, no welcome as honeymoon couple. We put it down to, poor communication. We did find an envelope in our room, containing a printed voucher, badly glued to a card, offering a bottle of sparkling wine… The evening dinner at Osprey’s , although reserved, we found no table allocated- asked to be moved and with no response from staff, we did it ourselves… Meal options limited and expensive, we complained about leeks were inedible - no response from kitchen Food was average quality for the cost. We never ate there again. Bus rates to port Douglas very pricey Breakfast confusing as we were not told of the options and how it works - as we had already arranged breakfast at reception on arrival and were not told options then. The only “free coffee” was filtered. We found hotel always wanted to try and charge for extras. Even at check out, no “thank you” or “how was your stay?” Service isn’t really up-to speed i’m afraid No internet in rooms - means all come to main reception and no options for entertainment in suites/rooms, expensive drinks. Such a shame, so much potential and not enough customer service.

Firstly, for a stay costing over a thousand dollars for one night, breakfast included, we didn’t perceive any added value. Not even a welcome drink! Having already stayed at a similar well known rainforest destination it was like chalk and cheese. To top it off, when we returned to our bungalow after dinner we were greeted by a colony of green ants inside the room and around the bed, which totally freaked out my wife. We did notify reception and were told that there was bug spray in the cupboard. This had little or no effect as they kept climbing up the wall. The next morning at check out I advised the staff member on duty of our disappointment, but was only offered an apology. This was our second time at Thala Beach and will unfortunately be our last.

We loved this place, beautiful rooms with balconies where you can sit on to relax have a drink or light meal. Staff are very accomodating, the restaurant is outstanding, great bars, loved having private beaches and magnificent rain forest pools. The resort takes a bit of an effort getting around but they will pick you up in the golf buggy if you have mobility issues. There is a shuttle service into port Douglas itself, but the last return trip is at 9. We will return to this place, as it was fabulous to relax and do very little

We booked this place as everything that looked suitable in Port Douglas was booked out. We had a coral sea view cabin and the view was exceptional . The cabin was lovely and well set out . The balcony was a lovely place to sit and watch the view. We were surrounded by trees and bird life as is the whole resort . The main reception area including a bar and restaurant was also beautiful and we going breakfast and dinner there very good. We did have a car so were able to visit other sights and have a couple of lovely dinners in Port Douglas. One word of warning - if you are unfit or have mobility issues you will not like this place as there is lots of up and down walking. Would definately come again .

Beautiful location, with a private beach and swimming pool, open air dining room and very helpful staff some have been there a long time so must be looked after. Big rooms, all built on the cliff edge so to get to some rooms its a steep climb but worth it. Only slight niggle is that the menu doesn't change and you have to book for 3 nights so if you don't eat pasta or are a veggie there isn't much choice, I ate the same dish each night - it was good though! Also only the rooms close to the reception have wifi which is surprising in this day & age, it made it hard to keep up with work in the uk - you don't really want to zoom in the dining room!

We stayed as family of four in two cabins. The cabins are lovely, on stilts in the rainforest. They’re well maintained if a little dated. All the buildings could do with a refurb. The beach is incredible and we enjoyed walking round the property seeing wildlife. We joined a number for complimentary tours/talks which were really good. The big problem is the food. Lovely restaurant setting and friendly staff but the menu is very limited. We stayed for five nights and came to dread the evening meals. The menu is so limited and the dishes pretty heavy and rich. No specials, no variation. So we were bored and and on some occasions felt pretty sick. None of this comes cheap. So a massive missed opportunity. They need to sort this menu out and/or get a new chef. At time of writing Port Douglas restaurants were heavily booked and seemed to be a lot of limited openings. We often resorted to making picnics from the supermarket for lunch - with very little effort more enjoyable than the restaurant. Breakfast was no more than OK.

Sublime views of beaches (2) and delightful swimming pools. A gorgeous property, secluded, private, definitely the best of the region, especially for those who value quiet and privacy and good nature vibes. Only 15 minutes from Port Douglas. We had several meals at the restaurant. The food is disappointing (very few options which stay the same), insufficient healthy options, and literally only 3 desserts to choose from at dinnertime. Also as a pescetarian, I had only 2 dinner choices, both which were very poor (gnocchi and barramundi), and indigestion-inducing. The gnocchi was drenched in cream; not my style at all (I think inspired by 1970's France; time has moved on). Starters were very poor and such a limited choice. We tried a couple and they were both really poor. Overall, the chef has a heavy-hand, needs more refinement and to balance flavours. Also I was craving less rich food and there no options at all (I would have loved side salads and steamed vegetables, even mashed potatoes). Anything to balance all the cream. All there is - is excessively rich sauteed green vegetables and oily french fries (served with a very peculiar and overly oily french sauce, butter-based). You get the idea. Oily chips served with a butter sauce! Just not a very balanced feeling on the stomach. Why not supply a home-baked health bread for instance to balance all these rich flavours. Or even crackers. Considering the prices of food, there could be something offered on the side. Even mashed potatoes. Really, the chef needs to think of including more side dishes, and forget drenching everything in butter or yoghurt. The breakfast is okay, just once again, very unhealthy. The waffles were super-sweet, which wasn't really what I was after. More options would be great. Would have been great to have a buffet breakfast included, I think that would have been wonderful, especially considering the sublime views from the restaurant. Overall a wonderful stay and we would love to visit again!

Had a very nice stay in two cabins with our family of four. The property, beach, and views are all absolutely beautiful. Unfortunately we had so many activities planned we didn't have time to fully explore the property. We had several nice meals at the restaurant. The food is expensive, but no more so than other nice restaurants in Port Douglas and the views are priceless. Note there is no WiFi in the cabins if that's important to you. There is fast WiFi in the lobby/restaurant/bar. Note the hotel is about 15 minutes outside of Port Douglas, so it was very helpful to have a car. Overall a great stay and we'd love to visit again.

Taking advantage of a last minute rate, I chose TBNR precisely because it wasn’t close to Port Douglas. I booked a Eucalypt Bungalow for 4 nights directly with the resort and was very impressed with the follow up from the front desk staff. They willingly helped me with airport transfers, restaurant bookings and a spa appointment before I arrived. Everyone knows businesses the world over are struggling with a lack of staff right now, and while I was sometimes inconvenienced, I’m not going to elaborate, because it’s not peculiar to TBNR. Please be patient - they’re doing their best! What I will say is that, having read the reviews, I came prepared. I knew this resort was hilly and vast. Do order a buggy to transport you if long distances or hills are a challenge for you. Knowing I didn’t intend leaving the resort all that often, and didn’t hire a car, I brought food and drink with me, to offset the cost. When I did dine at the onsite restaurant, the food was excellent, but you should expect Sydney city restaurant pricing. I was after total relaxation, the ability to switch off, read, enjoy a massage and take long walks on the beach and through the dedicated bush trails. And boy did it deliver! I returned home fully rested as intended. Falling asleep to the waves crashing on the beach, waking up to the most magnificent sunrises, and spending your day in nature will do that.

We stayed 5 nights (pay 4 deal) in a Coral Sea Bungalow, views of the ocean more limited than photos suggested but it was still a lovely view. The best view is from the restaurant & the bar seating area, plenty of lounges to enjoy the view. The rooms are large, comfortable & clean, currently being serviced second daily. No free wifi in rooms but Telstra works well. Breakfast not included in room rate but quite nice & at standard Port Douglas prices (ie higher than Sydney/Melbourne) I have reviewed dinner at the restaurant (Osprey) separately - we ate there twice. If you want to DIY grazing plate/picnic you will need to bring cutlery & plates. We purchased food at Port Douglas where there is a large IGA as you come into PD & a Coles right in the Main Street (undercover car park entry in street behind Main Street) Overall a great stay & we left feeling very relaxed.
