Ambassador Chicago receives mixed feedback from its guests. The hotel's rooms are appreciated for their comfortable beds and views, but some guests find them small, noisy, and outdated. While the atmosphere is often described as a unique mix of historic and modern with a lively ambiance and live music, opinions on value vary with some noting reasonable prices and others feeling overcharged.
The hotel's location is a highlight, being close to key attractions and offering a vibrant feel. Service is consistently praised, though amenities are suggested to need an upgrade.

Detailed Reviews
Wow, I couldn't be more thrilled with my recent stay at the Ambassador: I got a truly unbelievable rate for "long term stay" (11 nights) and, since I went in not expecting anything to be marvelous, I wound up absolutely delighted. While the restaurant still isn't up and running, there was morning coffee available in the lobby daily; large rooms, housekeeping service every three days as desired; luxuriously comfy sheets/bedding/pillows/bathroom amenities, and the location is so pleasant, convenient (and residential), I wound up walking nearly everywhere.
I don't know how long this attempt to lure back clients will last but if you're going to Chicago, check it out. Ian Shrager did a total rehab of the property years ago (when it became the Public hotel) so the rooms and lobby are very stylish, even if there's nada rocking the hotel currently. That suited me perfectly!
Bravo, Hyatt and Ambassador, glad you're back in town!

Victoria L, Bravo to you! We are so glad to be back in town as well. Our restaurants are up and running, come back! Maybe for 14 days? Glad you enjoyed our lil gem of a hotel in a perfect setting. Just glad to hear that you came in thinking one thing but left thinking/feeling another. Aren't we so lucky. Hope you are enjoying your summer - don't be a stranger.

This is probably the best hotel in North America, not just because of the location and the facility, it's also because of the culture the staff itself offers and promotes, the hotel front desk has super stars like Ms Kay, who go an extra mile in making up your day even though they don't have to do it. The night supervisor Mr. Kenny is kind and understanding and the bar tender Mr. Timmon is a Rockstar mix master, the lobby and the elevator have lively classic blues playing and its truly a miracle how the staff keeps the place sparkling clean and warm and never gives you a feeling of being away from home. This hotel has everything right, the bedding, the food, the bar and the music but most of all, the people. Ehind all this are the embodiment of perfection, kindness, compassion, professionalism and much more.
A special shout out to Ms Kay for her warm smile and welcoming demeanor and Mr Kenny whose kindness exceeded my expectations, nothing would ever replace my experience and I will always and forever will be staying at this hotel.

My company sent me to Chicago for work, I knew it would be for ten plus days so I wanted to make sure I was at a hotel with lots of room. They confirmed the Ambassador Chicago I quickly looked up reviews as I had only heard stories from my parents about the “iconic Ambassador.” What stood out for me was the constant theme of service - the photos looked great, spacious rooms, lots of light and a great neighborhood.
I arrived and was blown away by the customer service it’s like I was the only guest in the hotel. Everyone from the doorman, Wayne and Francisco to the front desk team, Bre, Paolo, Kenzie, Natalie, Jacob and Juan all made sure I had everything I needed. The director of housekeeping Kidist, checked in with me and always made sure I had what I needed. Yes the hotel is old, it’s historic the history is it’s charm. But I would pick this hotel over any other place simply because it’s personality shines so bright.

347reedg, This is an amazing review and I'm so glad that you were blown away!! First, our bell staff (Wayne and Francisco) are just the sweetest human beings. Second, our front office team loves to help create experiences and ensure that guests have everything that they need. Lastly, our fabulous housekeeping team wants to ensure that you sleep in a beautiful and comfortable room. While it may not seem like much to most people, this is the exact experience and sentiment that I want for all our guests who come to the hotel. Thanks for giving us such a great shoutout. We hope to welcome you back soon. Yours in Hospitality, Bre Smith

Visited this hotel at the end of September for my best friend's wedding. We were able to check in early around 10:00am at a $25 fee which I guess was helpful. The location of this hotel is outstanding about a 10 minute walk from the Belmont redline 'L' station and in a gorgeous tree lined neighborhood that is VERY safe to walk day or night. There is also excellent access to the the Lakefront and the Mag Mile within walking distance. Tons of bars and restaurants nearby also including an outpost of Lou Malnati's where you can get your Chicago style pizza fix. I did use the hotel in the gym and found it to be recently refreshed and unoccupied. They pretty much had everything I needed to get in a decent workout with some improvisation. Now in terms of the actual rooms at the hotel, the most important part, I must saw I wanted to be the exception to finding them a bit underwhelming but I wasn't. Despite being a World of Hyatt member we were given a room on the backside of the hotel with a window that looked out over an interior courtyard with a fire-escape blocking it. The furniture was "Scandinavian" in design "re: Ikea-like" and chipped in places. There was an empty fridge in the room which was nice. The bathroom, as others said, is original to the hotel and has not been updated. The A/C unit was extremely loud and banged and clanged through the night (though it did put out good air). At least the beds were very comfortable and the linens of decent quality and given it was an older property it was a fair sized room. Regardless this simply did not feel like a 4* hotel room. I do feel they are aware of this and try to make of for it with customer friendliness and other added touches.

White2tn, Thank you for providing us with such great feedback. Reviews like yours always help us improve, and I appreciate you taking the time to leave us such a detailed one. All of your kind words regarding our staff and service is greatly appreciated, and I will be sure to pass that along to our team. In regards to our rooms, we are a historic building, and some of the bathrooms are a little on the smaller side. Starting in 2022, we are looking to update those. I would love it if you reached out to me directly, as I'd like to hear any more feedback you have to offer, and to personally invite you back to stay with us again during your next visit to Chicago.

This hotel is beautiful and their staff is amazing! Stay here for a week with my boyfriend, who can be quite animated and boisterous at times, but the staff handled his animations gracefully and for that I thank them! From the time I checked in until the time I checked out any and every request I had was met efficiently and with a smile. They have concierge service upon check-in where they bring your bags up to your room for you and every concierge remember I came across was extremely nice and jolly and you could tell they enjoyed their work environment which makes a huge difference. We had a room on the 16th floor and the view was amazing!! This hotel is two blocks away from the lake/Navy Pier, within walking distance to the Magnificent Mile and downtown area, and there are also tons of bars and restaurants within the immediate vicinity of the hotel. I absolutely recommend this hotel if you're looking for a great deal in the downtown area with beautiful aesthetics and an amazing staff. In these racially tense times the entire staff of this hotel made me and my boyfriend (we're both unapologetically Black) feel very welcome and comfortable.

Jus_Kweenin, It warms my heart to read these kind of reviews left by our guests. Our staff proudly treats all of our guests with the same utmost respect and gratitude regardless of the differences that make us all unique. Even in these radically tense times as you note, the staff at this hotel just wants to deliver the best experience for your stay. The more animated a person is, the better! We love engaging with our guests. and we're so glad to have given such a great experience during your time here. Our bell and front office staff truly light up the hotel, and I'm thrilled that our service was to your expectations. On behalf of the hotel, I truly hope you come and stay with us again soon! Overall, I would recommend this hotel. Do know, you have to pay to park, even in the hotel parking garage. This hotel is near the water, but within walking distance of the Magnificent Mile. Also of note, there are no in room charging stations for electronics, nor any vending machines. There are limited food and beverage items available for purchase in the lounge area which get charged to your room. The restaurant is currently room service only.

We visited the ambassador as part of our honeymoon, the hotel is in a great location and the lobby and communal areas are beautiful, unfortunately the rooms are poor and very basic, with no tea or coffee making facilities, empty mini bar and ice machines 3 floors below!
The room was tired and definitely not at a level you would expect.
Housekeeping only visited every 3 days which is really poor as the basics (toilet rolls/washing gels) were not replaced.
Unfortunately I would not visit this hotel again I would choose a group/hotel that had a more personal touch with their guests

I have just left the hotel and have loved it so much, staying for two weeks and loving every second. My room was so spacious and the staff were so lovely that I would happily have stayed longer.
The hotel bar and restaurant serves fresh tasty food, and a small but decent drinks menu. I was mostly served by a young guy whose name I didn’t get but he was so polite and efficient, and a gentleman called James who made my stay a delight. Great chat and give me good local recommendations even though he was new to the area himself, he said. Thanks to both of them from your Scottish guest.
There were loads of positives to my room: a great coffee machine available on request (so don’t be put off if you don’t see one on arrival), a really comfy bed, lots of space, a big bathroom with bath/shower and nice products, plenty of sockets and USB points which are handy if you forgot to bring adapters. The quality of carpets/bedding/curtains was plush and everything felt good quality.
The lobby area is lovely just to sit in during the day and free tea/coffee/water are always available for guests, which was a nice touch. Reception staff are always on hand and are all just so lovely. A few of them gave me great local recommendations which I really appreciated.
The area of the Gold Coast is ideal. You can easily walk downtown and to lots of the major tourist attractions but the hotel is located in a slightly quieter locale with lots of great bars, restaurants, and supermarkets very close by indeed. It’s also just a few minutes walk to the wonderful lakeshore path. I would definitely stay in this area if I visited Chicago again.
Only two tiny flaws to my stay: the Wi-Fi had a very shaky connection so was often unavailable in my room. And there were a couple of days my room didn’t get serviced so I had to request more coffee/toiletries. But I understand the maid service team are very busy and it would just have been overlooked perhaps on more hectic days! Certainly nothing that spoiled my stay.
Thank you to all the hotel staff for the trip of a lifetime. I would recommend this place to anyone visiting Chicago for a short or long stay!

My absolute favorite hotel to stay at in Chicago, everything you’d want from a four star hotel and more. Location is perfect for spending time downtown, heading to the navy pier or walking to the river or beach across the parkway. Everything in walking distance and the area is very safe and quiet.
The rooms are extremely clean and modern. Housekeeping staff is attentive and always willing to help make your stay as comfortable as possible. Eli in housekeeping is the sweetest person ever and is genuinely so caring and hospitable. We adore her and always come back to see her. She makes our stays there all the more special.
Front desk staff is also always welcoming and friendly, Kenzie has always been very professional and accommodating even when we needed to extend our bookings or proving late checkouts when we requested.
Her warm welcome, professionalism and gorgeous smile always brighten up our days.
Also a huge Thank you to Melvin, the director of guest services for all his effort in making sure our stay was flawless and up to our expectations, in truth it exceeded our expectations every time we stayed there. It’s always a good sign when the head of guest relations leads by example, is proactive and interacts with the guests on a personal level and build relationships between the guest and the hotel and it’s staff. Thank you all!

I’ve stayed here twice now, once when it was public and now as the ambassador. It is a very old and beautiful building with a gorgeous lobby. I like that the rooms are very modern and minimalistic. Our room was very clean. I love the hotel and I travel constantly and i’ve stayed in some of the nicest hotels in the world. It has so much character being that is it is a classic historic building.
For the most discerning of world class travelers I would say that the hotel is an excellent condition although I don’t think it has been upgraded since it was the Public hotel.
My only complaint is that the pull out mattress in the living room was very uncomfortable and had hard bedsprings. I put a down comforter down under the bottom sheet that housekeeping brought me and it seem to make it more comfortable for my 12-year-old son as he said he slept great the following nights, but I would not recommend adult sleep on that mattress if they’re picky at all about comfort. It would be nice if the hotel replaced all of the pull out bed mattresses with foam mattresses or provided foam toppers upon request.
Our receptionist was very kind and check in was easy. Valet was quick to get us our car when needed. We got an incredible rate for a one bedroom suite and if the pricing continues to be competitive we will definitely continue to stay there.
If you like black out curtains they have the best blackout shades I’ve ever had an any hotel. I slept in until almost 11 one morning and I’m a mom that always wakes up early and never sleeps in so it was heaven! Even my son who also always wakes up early slept in until almost 10 each morning unless we woke him up earlier.

Hi BriePena! Glad you had such a great stay with us! We've renovated the rooms since our Public days, however we are always looking for ways to improve guests stays. We will definitely take note of the pullout mattresses as well, so thanks so much for the tip! Also, aren't those blackout shades the best?! We're just trying to make sure everyone gets their beauty sleep while they stay with us! I'm glad that our staff was also accommodating and helpful throughout your stay. Hopefully we'll see you again soon to have another 5/5 stay!

We stayed 7 nights . We were told Housekeeping cleans once every 3 or 4 days . If you need linens or towels you’ll have to call the front desk
They brought a Keurig to my room. I don't recall a resort fee.
Hello! Yes, we have irons in the room and microwaves available upon request.
We have them available on request as well as tea kettles - hope to have you brewing with us soon!
