Loved this place. It's well maintained and clean with beautiful decor and grounds. It has the feel of being straight from the Victorian Era with modern convenience. Close to downtown but nice and quiet at night. Great breakfast and the Inn Keeper was so nice and informative.
First of all, I want to say that this is an amazing beautiful house. For those who appreciate the original, you will not be disappointed. This is it. The hostess is also super friendly and accommodating. The AC is cold and there was no musty smell at all. Perhaps because of the current pandemic, it seemed things had been let go a little. For example, only one soap for both sink and shower and a really dirty front porch. Overall though this is a good choice if you want a unique stay. We did not have breakfast so I cannot comment on the food.
Quiet place, beautiful mansion that needs better care. Grounds are not well maintained, some carpets, wall paper and bath robes need replacement. Nice size room, a new mattress and comfortable pillows should be ordered. Old TV, AC not great. Nice bath towels but bring your own toiletries. Free water bottles in fridge by main door. Coffee available for free as well but not good quality. Breakfast was not included in my reservation and it was offered for a whopping $14. It’s not a 5-star place by any means as advertised. More like 2.5 stars at best. Too expensive for what it offers.
We recently stayed at the Victorian Mansion in the Loft Suite on an anniversary trip to Galena. I will start with the good. The location is great as you are only a few minutes walk from the shops and restaurants. It is located on the hill above town and there are A LOT of stairs to get to town if you are planning on walking. Getting back up all those stairs is hard!! But it is probably easier than trying to find parking. The bathroom was very nice and had a large freestanding soaker tub and nice shower. Now the weird. When we arrived we rang the doorbell and it was answered by the Innkeeper. We informed her that we had reserved the Loft Suite, and she said "That's where I live. I cleaned it up, and help yourself to anything in the fridge." That seemed a little strange to us, but she wasn't kidding. When we got to the suite, we opened the fridge, and it was absolutely full of food and medical supplies. In fact, her things were everywhere around the place. Toiletries in the shower and bathroom drawers, a large bin of her stuff just sitting next to the table and chairs, small weights next to the TV, and the couches were all covered with various blankets, I guess to keep them clean? And then there was the large picture of a nude Nastassja Kinski with a snake wrapped around her next to the bed. Bizarre! It felt very strange, and unlike any B&B we have ever stayed at, and we have stayed at quite a few. To be fair, it was listed on their site as an airbnb option, but we have also stayed at many airbnbs, and they have never had all of the occupant's things filling the place like that. It just felt so weird and uncomfortable! I did use her charging cord to charge my phone though : ) We didn't ever eat breakfast since they were serving it in the main house, and there didn't seem to be much thought given for social distancing, so we opted out of that. We were told that we could have eaten outside, but the grounds were very much neglected and overgrown. Areas that could have been lovely were not taken care of and had many weeds. The outdoor fireplace was filled with debris and garbage, with a 5 foot cardboard cylinder sticking out of it. It really was a shame, as the grounds are large and have a lot of potential. They just aren't taken care of. Not a place we would ever return to.…
Our friend group had an absolutely FABULOUS time here! Our “innkeeper” Bets was the BEST! The breakfasts each more morning were delicious, and the historic mansion was very clean and welcoming! Definitely a “lets go back” kind of place! DM
