A good meal, average service but not impressed by a service charge of nearly £20 being automatically added to our bill. When queried we were told this was a tip, we replied we'd rather decide this for ourselves so it was removed from our bill. Not the best way of attracting customers back in my opinion.

Had a wonderful meal Saturday evening, the menu had a great choice and plentiful with a good wine list. good sized portions and a great selection of meat, fish, vegetarian options and puddings! However extremely let down by a few members of staff, one in particular (a brunette) behind the bar who hardly smiled and made no effort with customers....

Superb lunch at this Inn, with very good service and excellent attention to detail by the manager, John. The devilled venison liver was out of this world, and my wife thought the Cheese Soufle was one of the best she had ever had. Will definitely return, despite the one hour trip from Winchester.

This is a wonderful place. It has to be or no one would travel over miles of, often, one lane country roads with thick hedges scraping the side of the car; and oh, by the way, you are sitting in the passenger's seat driving. seriously, the small village is beautiful and the inn has the quirkiness that is important in...

Room looked lovely but on closer inspection there was plenty of dust on skirting board/in corners. Lovely sash windows and very pretty fabric on curtains, but no net curtain - so had to keep curtains closed whilst changing. The toilet brush was rusty and very unattractive and the only bin was in the bathroom and it was tiny. No shortbread,...

Dropped in here on our way home from a day out walking in North Dorset, with a view to a future visit to the restaurant. As the restaurant was closed at the time (6pm) we just ordered drinks. My husband was recommended a local beer but sitting in the lovely garden he took one sip and declared it was off....

We were visiting friends in Dorset for the weekend, and it was all very relaxed with long dog walks and great company. We arrived at the King John Inn without a lunch reservation and with two dogs in tow, but neither was a problem. The room was clean, bright and inviting, as well as being dog friendly, and the service...

The restaurant certainly isn't for the impoverished, but the fish dish was very enjoyable. The staff were very attentive and engaging despite my being a solo customer on a busy night. Dogs are evidently welcome in this establishment, which considerably enhances the homely atmosphere. The meal wasn't cheap, but when I made intimations of proffering a tip, the staff graciously...

Driving back from New Wine, Somerset to home in Bournemouth we came through Tollard Royal. We needed lunch so were pleased to find the King John Inn. We sat outside so that our dogs could be with us and had two delicious starters and a good pud as well. The food was of a very high standard and all freshly...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Situated in the scenic village of Tollard Royal in rural Wiltshire, The King John Inn is a Victorian and award-wining country inn offering beautiful accommodation, delicious food and a warm, friendly service. Our eight en-suite bedrooms combine modern comfort with rustic elegance and feature luxurious linen, Nespresso machines, flat-screen TVs, Wi-Fi, direct dial phones and luxurious toiletries. Our Head Chef is an accomplished fisherman, bakes his own bread, makes his own cheese and still finds time to get up early and catch local game when in season so you can expect that every plate on the King John menu is as fresh as it can be and is expertly crafted with a passion for the local countryside. We are proud to have recently received 1 Rosette from the AA. In summer, our terraced garden is the perfect place to dine alfresco while watching the chefs in action in their Victorian-inspired outdoor kitchen. In winter, relax near our roaring-log fires in our open plan pub or in the informal restaurant. The bar provides an ever-changing selection of imported drafts and local beers as well as an extensive wine list. Salisbury and its cathedral are only a 30 minute drive away whilst the beautiful hillside town of Shaftesbury is only 20 minutes. The King John Inn also sits within a 5-minute walk of the historic Rushmore Park, an area of lawn and open woodland home to the Rushmore Golf Club. ... more   less
