A really lovely place to stay for a quiet weekend away near the Dorset coastline. The service is amazing and the food superb, and the owners and staff are very welcoming. Unfortunately our room (no. 6) was a little tired though, with mould growing up the wall (and a chair doesn't disguise it, sorry!), mould in the picture frames, ants...

We only stayed for B&B - not for dinner, which might well be great - we just don't know, but the service was certainly not great, the bedroom was OK, but really dim, and the staff were abrasive, unnecessarily so. There are better places to stay in Dorset (or the Wiltshire borders - or in fact pretty much anywhere elsewhere...

Stayed overnight and had evening meal and breakfast. Room was large and spacious and very clean. Bed was very comfortable. Staff were all friendly and helpful. Food was delicious. Place was dog friendly, and our dogs were able to stay in room with us/eat with us etc. Perfect.

We stayed for one night to break up our journey down to Devon. We wanted to stay in a homely pub with good food and this is exactly what this place offers. The dinner we had that evening and the breakfast the following morning were faultless. Hearty pub food but served with some style. The apple doughnuts were genius! The...

We booked a room and a z bed for our 4 year old daughter as we had been visiting family in Salisbury. It was a lovely drive out from there on a warm evening and the pub is situated in a peaceful spot. Our room ( superior double) 7 was very small, in fact too small really for an extra...

Do come to this little 8-bedroom hotel if you're looking for a quiet, relaxed, luxurious break in the country. We stayed two nights in room 8, which comprises the entire attic floor of a separate building from the main hotel. The room was spacious and had a lovely open plan bathroom (although the toilet is behind a door). The open...

We stayed one night for Portman horse trials and can't fault it. The village location is very quiet, in a beautiful part of the countryside. The rooms were both spacious and comfortable, with everything we needed for our short stay. The bathrooms were equally well provided for, with a large bath (so nice for us bath-lovers) and a powerful shower...

Stayed here for two nights as we were attending a wedding at a nearby venue. Nice rooms but quite small. Very good restaurant in nice surroundings. Breakfast was particularly delicious. Hotel is in a very quiet area and there is very little else around.

A good meal, average service but not impressed by a service charge of nearly £20 being automatically added to our bill. When queried we were told this was a tip, we replied we'd rather decide this for ourselves so it was removed from our bill. Not the best way of attracting customers back in my opinion.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Situated in the scenic village of Tollard Royal in rural Wiltshire, The King John Inn is a Victorian and award-wining country inn offering beautiful accommodation, delicious food and a warm, friendly service. Our eight en-suite bedrooms combine modern comfort with rustic elegance and feature luxurious linen, Nespresso machines, flat-screen TVs, Wi-Fi, direct dial phones and luxurious toiletries. Our Head Chef is an accomplished fisherman, bakes his own bread, makes his own cheese and still finds time to get up early and catch local game when in season so you can expect that every plate on the King John menu is as fresh as it can be and is expertly crafted with a passion for the local countryside. We are proud to have recently received 1 Rosette from the AA. In summer, our terraced garden is the perfect place to dine alfresco while watching the chefs in action in their Victorian-inspired outdoor kitchen. In winter, relax near our roaring-log fires in our open plan pub or in the informal restaurant. The bar provides an ever-changing selection of imported drafts and local beers as well as an extensive wine list. Salisbury and its cathedral are only a 30 minute drive away whilst the beautiful hillside town of Shaftesbury is only 20 minutes. The King John Inn also sits within a 5-minute walk of the historic Rushmore Park, an area of lawn and open woodland home to the Rushmore Golf Club. ... more   less
