We were cruising the Mississippi on the Celebration Belle and needed a place in Dubuque. Richards House was an easy choice, appearing to offer an experience all its own, not just a bed. It's all I hoped for in a Bed and Breakfast yet only a little extra to spend. I cannot emphasize enough how good a bargain Richards House is. The Apr 2021 review entitled: "Safety Issue Made It Difficult" said all the nice things I would have but I found no give in the railing, myself, so that issue may have been resolved and Richards House will now deserve the five star rating that the reviewer said she would have given. My wife lamented having only the morning to enjoy the 1889 original wood finishing and eclectic, vintage decor. Even now, she is scheming to get me back to Dubuque just to stay there. We live in Washington DC. It's no small thing to plan for such a return. Yes, she was happy. We had the Library Suite. It has its own selection of prize attractions and you may want to spend a bit more to get a look at more of what the rest of the house offers. We were served baked apples with nuts and granola, cinnamon French toast, and a two cheese souffle/quiche which were all a cut above any other hotel's hot breakfast choices. Fine muffins, bacon, coffee, and juice rounded out breakfast. As the April reviewer said, we ate aggressively in order to start the day off right and Richards served us very well in that regard. Our mattress was a memory foam that I feared was a bit firm, but I was wrong, its contouring was very good. As good as my sleep number bed at home. A restful, sustaining, and delicious stay; Richards House is a superb headquarters for enjoying Dubuque.

Room Tip: The Library suite is just a bit more money, but full of the kind of charm the rest of the House...

I wanted to like it but I do expect certain things when lodging. The idea of staying at a Victorian-era Munster house is fine but the reality is that this place is not up to par. We stayed in the top floor room, it was 3 flights of dark noisy stairs that got hotter, darker and smellier as we went up. The room was well outfitted but the lighting was not pleasant, as if electricity is a recent novelty. Then the neighborhood, well, it's the flats where the poor folks live, I have no problem with that but it is sketchy, not dangerous but can get a bit noisy. If the Dubuque Development Agency can help these folks with a $500k loan to get it up to par, it could get back on its feet, but it seems the repairs they need are pretty daunting.

Let's get this out of the way, the exterior was being remodeled, and there's temporary steps to the front door. The couple running the B&B have been here for over thirty years, and have the routine down pat. The rooms are clean and the most spacious I've seen in a B&B. Breakfast was served like clockwork and very well done. They bought the house from the Richards family, so they have a lot of original trim and furniture; very charming experience. They share a parking lot with the funeral home next door, so off-street parking is available. Dubuque has a old-fashioned downtown, with plenty of parks. Dining out was not a problem. We went to the aquarium and maritime museum, very enjoyable places.

We stayed at the Richard’s House over Memorial Day weekend. What a beautiful house with great history and very kind hosts. We were made to feel right at home from the moment we arrived until our departure. We stayed in the room on the top floor which we found very comfortable and quiet. This is a real gem with hosts to match. We’re already looking forward to future stays!!
