Detailed Reviews
Right across from the Cave visitor centre, Naxay is basic but comfortable wooden and concrete bungalows. The beds are soft and with heavy bedding for the cooler nights. Warm water shower, fan, clean bed and sheets, comfortable. Only thing lacking is a place to sit outside in the garden other than a small chess table. Friendly staff who made sure I was comfortable and allowed me to park my bike closer to my bungalow. Just down the road from all main food options and nestled next to a beautiful limestone cliff. For clean, comfortable, and for a night or two it's really a good deal.

The huts are situated round a garden courtyard and while pretty basic are clean, although we found the bed very hard! Each hut has a small sitting area which is nice if you have the time. It's very convenient for the Vieng Xai caves which is a truly fascinating visit

Good location just in front of the visitor center for the caves but SO COLD ! We stayed one night, what a pity the bungalows are not made for cold weather ! Otherwise it's okay, clean and big enough, nice garden, but what a pity we froze ...
Staff doesn't speak english at all but one guy did, fortunately, because we needed information about the visitor center (we didn't know it was right there), restaurant nearby (excellent indian food north the street "Sabadee") and taxi to Sam Neua for the day after.
Unfortunately, we didn't find a place to rent scooter.

We arrived late in the evening and were greeted by Vieng, the host, who speaks good English and is extremely helpful.
We booked 3 double rooms, which were very clean with nice beds and linen and high pressure hot shower.
We slept like logs, had a great Lao breakfast down the road and returned at 8:30 to have the most incredible experience of the Caves.
Make sure you get both the audio guide and the great Lao person guide.
Wifi works in the room, when Lao Internet permits. Don't blame the owner.
Restaurant was being refurbished and when it opens you have everything under one roof.
Well done Vieng and Mrs Vieng.
A great stay and great value for money.
Many thanks for being such perfect Vieng Xai hosts.

If you’ve taken the time and trouble to get this far (and there can be plenty of both no-matter which direction your coming from) then you’re likely to want to spend a few days.
5 star, air-conditioned, buttoned up tourists don’t bother reading on, you probably won’t be staying the night in Vieng Xai.
Accommodation choices in Vieng Xai can be counted on one hand – not a load of difference in them, so it comes down to personal preference and maybe location.
The Naxay 2 (I don’t know if there is a ‘1’) is across the road from the visitor centre where the cave tours start from, so that can be handy, it’s a bit of a walk up to the village to the Indian ‘Restaurant’ where most of the travellers seem to eat, the food is great and the guy who runs the joint is a good local ‘fixer’.
The Guesthouse features rooms with comfy beds (double or twin) – Hot Water - WiFi – and TV (I found 2 channels), I’m not sure what to call the decor so I’m going with ‘quaint’. The gardens are very nice and really set the place apart from some of the others and there’s a Pétanque court (I’m not going to explain it, Google it) Pétanque is great fun, better after a few beers.
Naxay is my pick in Vieng Xai, it’s not the ‘flashest’ place you’ll ever stay in but if you’ve spent some time on the road you’ve slept in a lot worse and probably paid more for the dubious privilege.
If your coming from Xam Neua and you find the ‘bus’ is not running on the day (probably due to the lack of paying customers or your at the wrong bus station, there are 2) don’t despair, find a ‘scooter guy’ at the bus station who will take you to the ‘other’ bus, it’s a bit of a hair raising ride along the mountain roads but it’s all part of the adventure, after all, it’s what you came for.

I stayed here for two nights in one of their bungalows (the only thing they have). The bungalow looks nice on the outside but on the inside they could use a touch up. The bed and everything is fine, but the toilet has a big crack in it and I had a little ant party going in the bathroom which I had to wash away with the shower.
The wifi doesn't really reach to the far bungalows and I thought it was a little expensive for Lao standards, but there aren't too many other places to go haha! I did hear about a place where you can stay in bungalows over the water, but I didn't check it out so I don't know if it is any good

This is a simple guesthouse, with nice tranquil looking bungalows. It's right opposite the cave visitor centre, which is good but the downside is that you have to walk 1km to the market area whenever you want to eat
In terms of the rooms well I moved huts because the toilet didn't flush in one and the shower didn't work. Even the new room it was not 100% working so I would check this before accepting a hut.
Price is reasonable and for VX I think this is a good option.

The bamboo bungalows are in poor shape. Nevertheless, the rooms are more or less clean. The beds are extremely hard. We had warm water and the fan was working. For US$ 7 a night it was okay. But there was no food provided, not in the evening and not in the morning. We had to walk about 1 km to the market.
