Detailed Reviews
Stayed overnight whilst visiting a local works place for an interview. The rooms are comfortable and clean and I had a single room (en suite). There didn't seem to be many staying at the time although a large group was expected that evening. I was entertained by a delightful Pug Pup which ran around like a manic clockwork toy. The Landlady was chatty and made sandwiches to order. Surprisingly a nice place and wonderfully eccentric.

I have to admit that the wish to stay in an 'Admiral Benbow' inn was inspired by 'Treasure Island'! Would I find Black Spot? Would I find the treasure map? Sadly not ~ but I did have a good stay.
The inn and landlady were both charming although the inn itself was somewhat 'tatty' and in need of a refurbishment. The lovely landlady, however, did say that she was planning to do that in the near future. But the bed was clean and comfortable, the ensuite actually had a bath as well as a shower (yay!), the bar was full or lovely chatty locals when I arrived and the breakfast (at additional cost) was fine.
The Admiral Benbow was quite a find and when the proposed 'tidy up and refurb' has been completed will possibly advance to 'excellent'.

popped in while walking the dog the lady advised us it was a b&b but we could have a drink . she made us very welcome .very chatty and the inside was very quirky and it was like walking into the past . a lot of wooden pews old fashioned tables and a fantastic range . it was also the admiral benbow drinking house as he lived over the road originally .history of a great man listed over the fire . would visit again when in the area.

We thought the place was closed... it should be. ... I'm a well seasoned traveller and I wouldn't let my dog stay here... the photos are nothing like the real thing we stayed here a few weeks ago and I hate to think someone can be duped by the pictures it's a shame you couldn't do smell vision.... if you are a contractor working local and looking to hot bed on different shifts I'm sure you would enjoy. Cannot believe this is really trying to charge £44 a night.... omg.! I obviously didn't stay I can't stay somewhere where I'm constantly guffing because of the smell. The smell in the bar is doggy.. faggy... urine and who in their right mind would set up a shower in the urinal area of the toilets... shocking... place should be demolished.

Response from wynnstay007, Owner at Admiral Benbow Inn
Responded 8 Aug 2017
Regarding your review as we have had many good reviews here at the Admiral Benbow I believe this is far from the truth as you say you stayed here a few weeks ago and then say you never stayed here at all. We are 18 th century coaching inn not a 5 star Hilton. The property bedrooms are all en- suite to excellent standard. All pictures that are online are genuine to give such a poor review as for the bar we never allow pets and there is a smoking area at the rear of the inn. as for the rates £44 is very reasonable as you should know for a double en - suite room. If you did stay why didn't you complain at the time,we have had many good reviews on booking.com We are refurbishing the property at present and will be offering a full food menu shortly

I would usually say that 'you get what you pay for' but I've stayed in some lovely places between £45-£60 a night and this most certainly wasn't one of them. My partner got a phone call the day before saying that the double room we had booked had been 'double booked' and that we would have to stay in a twin room. No apologies, no nothing. I would have much preferred the option of getting a refund but that wasn't offered and to tell us the day before was rather short notice so we were stuck. My partner had the best of intentions in booking this place but this is not my cup of tea at all. Mismatched furniture, mismatched bedding sets, stained bedding, lacey drapes, owners possessions in the drawers, half used toiletries from the previous guests, mouldy window frames, no hairdryer in room, room far too hot, faulty extension lead by bed. Walls must be paper thin as I heard other guests conversations until the early hours. What I found really quite concerning and what was the final nail in the coffin for me was the foul smell of Cannabis that was filling our room and the landing. Made worse by the fact our window didn't open. Ironically there was a No Smoking sign blue tacked up in our room. Absolutely appalling, owner couldn't possibly have not noticed the stench and should have been more proactive in dealing with the culprit. Grim, never been so glad to be back home in my life. Couldn't wait to wash all my clothes and have a shower, I felt filthy after staying here. It may well be a work in progress but it's not fit for guests at the moment.

The smell of the room! I'm not sure whether it was just the effects of damp or damp and poor cleanliness but the room stunk. We did have the option of taking the refurbished room but it smelled just as bad. I know the room is cheap at £44 per night but it really isn't worth £44 a night. Do yourselves a favour and pay an extra £10 or £20 for somewhere better.
The room was very cold on arrival. The heating was turned on when we arrived. As it is an old building this may be contributing to the smell. The room had obviously not been aired. The bed linen certainly wasn't fresh bordering on unclean. Towels were stained - they may have been washed but they should have been replaced. Cobwebs in the light shade may be good for Halloween but I wasn't impressed.
I know the room was or is going to be refurbished but the age of the furniture didn't bother me and new furniture and a lick of paint isn't going to improve things in the long term if the cleanliness isn't dealt with.
I really didn't want to sleep in the bed as it smelled. We could not find alternative accommodation at such short notice and it was too far to drive home so it was a choice of staying in the room or sleeping in the car. The car lost because it is a 2 seater. I slept through the night fully clothed as the bed smelled so bad. When I awoke early I asked my wife if it was too early to leave because that's all I wanted to do.
I'm not a 'prim and proper' type of person and I wasn't expecting a Premier Inn standard but I have stayed in many budget B&B's at a similar price and they were a whole lot better than this.

The inn is undergoing renovations but despite that I was warmly welcomed. The bar area is not yet open but the owners are updating this area and plan to open it to residents, they were however very accommodating and had some drinks available. The room was at the top of the building, stairs were steep so not recommended if you have mobility issues but fine for me. The room itself was lovely and spacious, bathroom was great and all usual facilities there. I personally would have liked more toiletries than liquid soap but it did work as a shower gel! Wifi connection was adequate, better in the evening than the morning but it sufficed. Breakfast was not officially served but the owner made toast and coffee in the morning which was a lovely surprise and was well received. it was great value for money and I would love to stay there again when they have completed their improvements.

My fiancé and I stayed at the Admiral Benbow Inn, in Church Street.
The landlady, Elfrida (Elf), was a really lovely lady, and she made us feel most welcome. The room was spacious, and the bed was comfortable. The only downside was the church bells chimed every quarter of the hour throughout the day and night, but we got used to it towards the end of our stay. Parking was never a problem, as it seemed we were the only long-term guests staying in the particular week we were there.
Our room was on the top floor, and the stairs leading up to there were steep, and a climb, so it wouldn't have been suitable for a family with young children.
Elf made breakfast of toast and tea, most mornings...a pleasant surprise, and it was my birthday on the Tuesday - she went out of her way to make scrambled egg on toast.
We would stay there again, because we were treated so well.

Comfortable, clean and welcoming, at a very reasonable cost, the Admiral Benbow made a perfect base for our visits to the Shrewsbury Folk Festival, being a 20 minute drive from the festival site. We would be happy to return there.

The landlady was very helpful and did everything she could to make us feel welcome. The room was clean, the bed was very comfortable and the church clock didn't bother us at all! We had a few drinks in the bar in the evening and the local people there were very friendly. This was an inexpensive room in an old Inn with great character. We have paid a lot more for places that we have enjoyed a lot less.
