This is a lovely b&b in a beautiful setting with an experienced host who offered us warm hospitality and one of the best breakfasts we have ever had! Tom communicated promptly and gave us important detour information due to local road closures well in advance of our travel date. The room facing the back of the property has wonderful natural light and view of the grounds. A lovely experience and one we hope to repeat. Thank you, Tom!

Thank you for your kind comments but I need to point out my wife Judy is the chef and deserves the credit for the breakfast. Hope to have you as repeat guests. Tom

This is a gem. I’ve read the previous reviews about Tom and Judy extolling their wonderful hospitality— I concur and suggest you read the reviews—almost all of which mention the proprietors by name which says a lot. This review will concentrate on ambiance. If you are looking for a truly authentic Maine B&B experience, look no further. The 160 +++-year old house that over looks the beautiful Androscoggin River is a treasure in itself. The rooms of the house including the bedrooms have retained their charm and authenticity, yet the bedrooms feature air conditioning (which I didn’t use on a hot July night due to a wonderful natural cross breeze) , private baths that were obviously not part of the original structure, but are very comfortably up to, perhaps beyond, modern standards. A comfortable “period” room and an exceptionally delicious hot breakfast—that’s why you choose a B&B over a hotel. And the rates are exceptionally low! We spent only one night. Attended the Maine State Music Theater’s production in Brunswick (1 mile away) , preceded by a great dinner at Richard’s (also highly recommended). We enjoyed a glass of brandy that we had brought with us in one of the parlors upon our return. There is a reason why this establishment is a 5-star review by so many guests.

Thank you for your kind comments. We enjoyed having you stay with us. We appreciate you mentioning the breakfasts. While we change the entree's and the muffins / sweet breads daily we believe all are exceptional and the real reason for choosing a B & B

WOW! This place is very special! Tom and Judy are warm, friendly hosts that provide a gourmet breakfast around a cozy table with delightful conversation with the other guests. The back yard is perfect for relaxing and watching the river ease by. A perfect location for day trips to this are of "Down East" Maine.

Thank you for your very kind review, noting the delightful conversation with other guests. We made the decision early in our Beekeeping career that we would have one large table to encourage interaction among guests even though guests are free to choose their own start time for breakfast, between 7 and 9 AM, and enjoy seeing guests sit around the table chatting with other guests long after they have finished eating. Wonderful Inn. Breakfast was so delicious. Complete with coffee, juice, warm muffins, fruit, Dutch baby pancake with berries and cream, and an omelet. I was even able to get a cup of coffee early to take outside. I enjoyed the front porch and swim in the back overlooking the River. The gardens were lovely. Our room (garden room) was well appointed with a comfortable bed and cleverly designed bath.
Great location right outside town. Easy to get to restaurants and shopping as well as Route 1.
The hosts are so nice and very easy to contact. They were even flexible with check in-time as we were coming a long distance. Tom and his wife went out of their way to make us feel welcomed.
A nice Inn to rest and relax.

My daughter who lives in Boston, and I the mother who lives in Orono, met at the Black Lantern to attend a wedding and to visit. The Inn is lovely . It is carefully appointed with tasteful furniture and decorations, has a tremendous garden and waterfront view of the Androscoggin River, and has the kindest host and hostess one could imagine. Along with the peaceful views of the River, the other high point was the absolutely wonderful breakfast that was served -- a really memorable meal. We so enjoyed our stay that we plan on having it be a half way meeting point for our visits in the future.

Thank you for your very kind comments. We enjoyed meeting both of you. Thanks also for noting the views of the river. For an in-town property we have very vice views of the river, even locals who stop by are pleasantly surprised by the views.

The Black Lantern was our stay for one night on our mother-daughter road trip through Maine. It exceeded our expectations! This beautiful home has stunning river views and a serene, sprawling garden filled with songbirds and to our delight, chipmunks. Our room (the Garden Room) was immaculate, clean, airy, and filled with beautiful decor (as with the rest of the home). This mid-19th century home is so loved. The best part was undoubtedly the wonderful conversation with Tom and Judy, who prepared a delicious breakfast in the dining room. I was impressed with the creative, fresh menu! Everything was tailored to meet our needs. We can’t wait to come back.

It is worth adding that Tom and Judy were communicative and accommodating through the booking process before we even met them! We had to make some changes to our itinerary and they were so flexible. They are the best of the best!

This is a hidden gem. We needed a place to stay while in transit from Georgetown, ME to Portland. Tom called prior to our visit as we thought we would be arriving late evening. Turns out we arrived around 9 pm. He greeted us when we arrive, showed us around and our room. He also explained how breakfast works. What a comfortable home. I felt like we were visiting relatives we hadn't seen in a while! Breakfast was delicious! Fresh made to order food starting with fruit, coffee / tea / juice and a wonderful mix of eggs and a fluffy item with fresh fruit compote. A pleasant treat when compared to a hotel chain. if you're ever passing this area, take the time to stay here!

Thanks for your very kind comments. Glad you liked the breakfast. We have always believed that serving a great breakfast in a nice setting is an integral part of the B & B experience. While we change the menu daily all are completely homemade and we get great feedback on them all.

We stayed at the Black Lantern B&B during a recent reunion at the former Brunswick Naval Air Station. Tom and Judy were very attentive hosts and the place was immaculate. We enjoyed a tasty breakfast in a beautiful garden overlooking the Androscoggin River. The room was well appointed and we loved the homey atmosphere. We hope to return one day soon.
