The JW Marriott Grand Rapids is everything you would expect and nothing you could have imagined. Situated in the heart of downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan, the JW Marriott Grand Rapids is meticulously designed for both business and pleasure. As the first JW Marriott hotel in the Midwest, the hotel offers 337 well-appointed, smoke-free rooms and suites on 23 posh floors. Each of which is outfitted with atypical amenities like a 42" flat screen TV, as well as numerous other uncommon personal luxuries. From shareholder's meetings to lavish wedding receptions to intimate weekend getaways to The Spa, the JW raises the bar. In luxury. In service. In dining. In everything.

JW Marriott in Grand Rapids is like the beautiful, popular and vapid high school crush. The location is nice But the cold, pretentious, self assuredness that the hotel has becomes irritating quick. After coming here for both long and short stays for years, I’m pretty much over this place. Status acknowledgement much less perks are pretty much non existent. Maybe 1 room upgrade and 1 suite rewards request honored over multiple stays per year. Some staff are cool, but the general vibe is you should be honored to pay their NYC 5 star rates. The management obviously does not care about training their staff to the high standards the JW name deserves. Reception looks at you hoping that you’ll just walk by and use your phone app to open whatever room they stuck you in. COVID has given them an excuse to eliminate what amenities they actually had such as the lounge while giving out coupons to a Starbucks which has limited hours. I wish things would change but it appears they love being elitist. Even the Amway Grand, who I believe shares ownership with the JW has a warmer feel.

When they checked me into my room, I was immediately horrified! There was mold on the ceiling, and I received horrible bug bites while sleeping. I also found a woman under my bed. Would not recommend.

I stayed at the J.W. Marriott in Grand Rapids for a special occasion after business took me to the area. My experience was disappointing because the hotel goes out of its way to game the system by trying to avoid providing the guaranteed benefits that come with Marriott Bonvoy elite status. Specifically, breakfast. You get a voucher for $20. The problem? It's basically impossible to have breakfast in the hotel restaurant, including coffee, tip and tax, for $20 unless you are fine eating yogurt, bread, or an unhealthy sandwich. All of the prices for breakfast entrees like eggs are conveniently priced between $17-$25, which makes the $20 worthless since breakfast will exceed the value of the voucher by the time coffee, juice, tip and tax are added to the bill. Not only does this violate both the letter and spirit of the Marriott Bonvoy terms and conditions, but it's incredibly chintzy of the hotel to nickle-and-dime the corporate chain's best customers over a hot entree. The hotel's F&B is probably buying eggs for $0.15 per egg (maybe $0.75 an egg if they're expensive organic, free-range eggs). So, charging $17 for two eggs cooked any way is beyond ridiculous. This disingenuous behavior left a really bad taste in my mouth. To the hotel's credit when I complained to corporate Marriott the manager on duty provided additional vouchers to cover the real cost of breakfast but I doubt they did this for other guests or adjusted their unethical practices for future guests. Between the breakfast situation and the long list of amenities and services suspended or eliminated under the guise of coronavirus, I won't stay here again.

The JW Marriott in Grand Rapids is below the standards one expects from a JW Marriott or anyone hotel above 4 1/2 stars. 1) No pre-arrival email to guests 2) No valet parking (other hotels are managing to do it in the age of covid) 3) Guest rooms are 5 years outdated. 4) TV is 42 inches and from 2013. Most JW Marriott hotels (as well as most Marriott brands) have had 50 or 55 inch TVs since 2016. 5) Old scratched and scuffed furniture. Some of the furniture was not dusted recently. 6) Ugly old carpets (unlike the new carpeting in lobby and event rooms). 7) Bad lighting with a million light switches because there are no central lighting controls. 8) No 100% blackout curtains . Many JW Marriott or comparable properties that are new or newly renovated in downtown locations have electronic blinds/curtains. 9) No USB outlets by nightstand. 10) No phone on nightstand for wakeup calls. The phone is on the desk. There's no directory for the phone. When I dialed 0 I received a busy signal. I've never had a busy signal ever in a hotel. 11) Horrible sound/noise insulation for a hotel built right downtown near the expresssway. 12) A pathetically small gym with only two treadmills for a property with something like 300 guest rooms. TWO TREADMILLS FOR 300 ROOMS. Of the two treadmills, they are not really really socially distanced if two people want to use them at the same time. 13) No lunch or afternoon drink or food options. Starbucks is closed, lobby restaurant and bar are closed after breakfast until 5 pm, and I didn't see any sort of pantry or market. 14) Front desk never promoted the hotel restaurant or bar with a soft sell. That's money left on the table. Nothing in guest rooms or room key envelope with restaurant hours. I could go on. The old furniture that I spoke of earlier looks more like a Marriott airport or Marriott suburban office park hotel from 2003-2006, not a JW Marriott. Again, this is just below the standard of what you expect in JW Marriott. If this was a Marriott or Sheraton, it would be tired but acceptable. This is not acceptable. The only nice things were the purple accent sofa, which looked newer than the rest of the room decor. Also, the bathroom was fully stocked with amenities from lotion to mouthwash to shampoo, conditioner, etc. There was also a bathrobe. Yet there was no pen or writing paper. Nor were there newspapers or even a local magazine about Grand Rapids. I'm sure the hotel is blaming covid for removing these things, but it doesn't make sense because you either remove everything from the rooms or you keep everything. I booked this hotel because I thought I was getting a JW Marriott. Instead, I got a tired old hotel pretending to be a JW Marriott that in reality is on par with a very average airport or suburban office park Sheraton or Marriott. I would not stay here again.

Dear Valued Guest, Thank you for sharing your feedback with us! I am deeply sorry we did not meet your expectations within your time with us. Covid-19 has brought with it many challenges, and I can assure you we are doing everything in our power to return the services and amenities that we would normally have while maintaining the safety of our guests and staff. Your dissatisfaction of the rooms is very disappointing to us, as we pride ourselves in luxury and quality. We had a renovation planned that got pushed back due to the current circumstances, but we do plan to renovate in the near future. We hope once those renovations occur you may choose to stay with us again so we can provide you with our true JW Marriott service. Once again, I apologize for the concerns you shared. If you have any further concerns please do not hesitate to reach out. Thank you so much for staying with us during these unusual times, we hope we can welcome you back in the future.
