Spent 5 nights at La Tortuga on a recent trip to Leon. PROS - SECURITY - One entrance to the street which is locked at night. Someone at the check in desk adjacent to it most of the time. Doors and windows all locked. - LOCATION - Within walking distance (only a couple of blocks) from the main cathedral and Central Park area of Leon. Within walking distance to the other hostels as well and we felt comfortable walking around at night between these venues. Not within walking distance to the bus station but none of the hostels located in the centre are as the bus station is on the periphery of the town. - WIFI - worked but was a bit slow at times. - AIR CONDITIONING - Offered in some but not all rooms. Leon gets hot so having this available was appreciated. - CLEAN - SERVICE - Staff were friendly. - BREAKFAST - Was included in the price. Three options provided (Granola, pancakes, traditional Nicaraguan). 24 hour black coffee. - SHARED FACILITIES - Kitchen was well equipped and included a water refill station. Small plunge pool on site but wasn’t clean when we visited. They have a small terrace with a gym but its very minimal. Pool table and honesty bar at the front (Small and large beers, Water and soft drink). - BAGGAGE STORAGE - sort of. There is a cupboard located in the common area that can be locked. They use this to store bags but it only has a capacity of 3 bags. If its full they can hold it behind the desk. We stored 3 bags there as we went on a overnight trip to somoto and they were safe upon return. CONS - No hot water CONSIDERATIONS - Not a party hostel. Probably catering more for a flashpacker audience. - It has three resident turtles that wander around. Funny story - the hostel was named the lazy turtle but locals for some reason thought it was a turtle rehabilitation centre so have brought turtles here when they have found a new home. Overall a great option.

We stayed for one night and enjoyed our limited time there. Great location - leon is compact so everything is close by. The breakfast included was amazing, nice common area and self service beverage fridge. There is also a pool (we didn't use it due to our short stay) and a small gym on the upper level. We had hoped to extend it however they were fully booked for the room type we were after.

This is a clean, well- located Hostel, that is good for a stay of 1 night or a week. not a lot of luxuries , but fairly quiet, good kitchen facility and staff are very helpful. In the middle of an area of good local Nica restaurants,it has a small swimming pool, good sitting area , and a self-serve beverage bar.

Loved this hostal. Owner is foreign (Dutch?) but the place is run by local staff (not so common in Nicaragua) who were fantastic in every way. Helpful, great with advice on where to go and what to see, always around to answer questions, happy to share a beer and a game of pool on their very decent table in the common area at the front of the hostal. Private room for 2 people that we stayed in was nice, clean, good fans (needed in sizzling Leon), great value (8 USD/person). Location is a few blocks from central square, but Leon is pretty compact and you can find everything you need in terms of restaurants and sights within easy walking distance. Finally, and most importantly, great hammocks! Lots of them, large ones for two people and smaller ones, spaced all around the common area which also has a nice cool plunge pool that you will probably find yourself jumping into during the middle of the day.

This is great place to stay. Ideal for those seeking cool, relaxing vibe. Breakfast, free coffee and water was very welcome. And the small pool was great for relaxing after a hot trip. I would definitely stay here again.

The hostel is around 10 minutes walk from the Cathedral. Staff are very friendly. Got my volcano boarding tour and couple of shuttles organised through them. Was done professionally. Rooms are basic, but quiet and comfortable. Bathrooms are tad small. You can buy water, beer or soft drinks from them, almost at the same rate you would pay outside. There is a pool table, books for reading and tiny pool. Decor is quite nice and rustic.

Tortuga Booluda is everything a thirty-something could want in a hostel. It's quiet and peaceful because it's on the other side of the plaza from the party hostels. The number of privates outnumber the dorm rooms, but there are dorms available. The rooms feel like a hotel with small touches like cards with local info, hand towels, pretty decorations, and nice furniture. The roomsdo get hot, but the fans cool them down nicely, especially at night. I love that the staff are locals (and so helpful!), and the big communal kitchen, dining table, and comfy chairs next to the pool give people ample opportunities to make friends with strangers. There's a good labeling system in the kitchen. It's centrally located and an excellent value! There's a huge book exchange, and the pool is small but refreshing. The best thing in my mind that TB does is provide free filtered water for guests. Why ALL hostels don't do this is beyond me - especially those that claim to be eco-friendly. I really love their system of ticking off beers retrieved from the fridge; it made me feel trusted and honored as a guest. This is a brilliant hostel and a standard to which all guesthouses should aim. Special shout out to Wilton for putting us on a shuttle at two am with grace and good humor!

Really happy we chose to stay here. Not only did we feel at home, safe and comfortable but there were other great guests staying here at the same time. We had an airconditioner in our room which was great. The pool is a great touch with how hot León is. And it’s clean which was a great upside compared to other dipping pools we have come across during our stay. They make 2 delicious breakfasts in the morning. You can either banana pancakes or a traditional Nicaraguan eggs, beans, rice and tortillas. If you choose to stay here. ENJOY!
