Shrigley Hall Hotel & Spa, nestled in a picturesque and tranquil location, is often celebrated for its beautiful views and serene setting, making it a favorite for relaxation and weddings. However, some guests have expressed concerns over the value, pointing out high costs for services, including pricey food and drinks, which do not always align with expectations, particularly in the spa area.
While the service receives commendations for friendly and helpful staff, the overall experience is marred by noise disruptions, inconsistent cleanliness, and a mix of outdated and well-appointed rooms and amenities.

We stayed in the Moorlands suite - our stay included dinner, overnight, breakfast and spa.
We were a group of 5 celebrating a special birthday. We were pleased that we had a room which slept 6 people - 4 single beds and 1 double.
The room was practical and had everything we needed - hairdryer, TV, kettle. It was however quite dirty. The carpet had a lot of stains and covered in hair. We also found popcorn on the floor and there were stains on the sheets. The sink plugs were orange and had mildew, as were the tiles in the shower.
Dinner was satisfactory. I ordered the belly pork but was disappointed as it wasn’t crispy but very fatty.
Breakfast was reasonable - but very busy and felt like we were in a canteen.
The spa was very, very disappointing. It was very busy. The changing rooms are very narrow making it feel squashed getting ready. There was only one toilet too, not ideal! Most of the lockers also weren’t working.
The spa itself didn’t feel relaxing. The sauna/steam rooms were too small. The walls were flaking with plaster and building work was still taking place. It just didn’t feel finished and not very relaxing. The outdoor pool was probably the only good thing.
Only one out of the three showers were working in the changing room. The hooks to hang your towels were too high up and not easy to reach. Getting ready afterwards wasn’t pleasant. It just all felt very chaotic which is not how you’re meant to feel after a spa break.
The hotel has so much potential but little things just let it down - cleaning room doors left open, making it feel untidy. Old furniture was left in corridors, the cleaning staff were dressed in own clothes which didn’t look professional.
I also contacted the hotel to report a missing item. I was on hold for over 10mins and then cut off. I tried a few times and the same thing kept happening. I then emailed the hotel. They acknowledged my email and said that they would get in touch. 5 days later, I still haven’t had a response from them.
As it currently stands I would not recommend staying here again.

So close to being perfect! We travelled in March on the Black Friday sale as a pair of friends.
Positives - The outdoor pool makes it. It never felt too busy across the two days we visited the spa, it's beautifully warm and the views across the countryside were amazing. The added bonus of plane watching Manchester Airport in the distance! There was a lovely atmosphere with background music playing - The indoor spa area also didn't feel busy at all. - The bedroom itself was decorated beautifully and modern, with jazzy wallpaper. Beds were incredibly comfortable - All staff were super friendly, helpful and welcoming! - We were able to check in an hour and a half early as the room was ready - The evening quiz in the bar was amazing! Often the evenings can feel lacking at spa hotels but it was really engaging with a great atmosphere and helped us get chatting to other guests
Negatives - The sauna and steam rooms are very small. You'd struggle to fit more than 4 people in the sauna unless you're close friends - One jacuzzi was out of service the weekend we stayed - The fire pits weren't lit outside, given it was a crisp March weekend it would be amazing to sit by these during the day! - We paid £20 for a guaranteed updated room but the bathroom was very dated, including a cracked sink, paint on the floor, mouldy grout etc - The main light didn't work in our room and the room was generally a bit on the dusty side - The breakfast online and on our booking suggested there would be hot breakfast to order, including a veggie option and porridge, plus continental. The breakfast was actually all serve yourself and there were limited veggie options, no sausages etc as suggested online. It was basically service yourself bacon, eggs etc, cereals, ready made pastries, toast, or one small platter plate of cheese slices. As a vegan I would have liked the option of veggie sausages or oat milk porridge as advertised online. Spa hotels I've stayed at in the past have been very eco focused with good meat free alternatives - Three vegan mains were available for the evening meal, however these weren't listed on the menu and one was actually out of stock when I requested it. It would be easier for guests and serving staff to include vegan options on the menu - The spa all round needs a good clean. The grout and sealant both inside and out was full of black mould and the floor of the outdoor pool was dirty. Many of the lockers were broken with doors hanging off and as other reviews have stated the changing room is very, very small so this makes the difference at changeover time when trying to find a free, working locker
Overall I would return if I could guarantee another special offer. With some minor adjustments this would be the perfect stay

Stayed for a weekend in a Suite as part of a family group.
For the positives: the staff were all absolutely lovely and could not have been more helpful. Andy in the bar/restaurant was particularly kind and went out of his way to make sure we had everything we needed. The grounds were also extremely pretty and the peacocks were a wow.
I think the hotel works extremely well as a wedding venue or as a place to come from spa breaks, golf breaks or a treat afternoon tea. HOWEVER as a guest not doing these things it wasn’t great (we stayed to attend a family event nearby)
It just doesn’t feel like a 4* hotel in at all and without the distraction of spa/ golf/ a wedding this becomes most stark.
1) No room service - this is an absolute pain when staying with small children
2) Tidy/ clean of the room only every three days. Totally unacceptable above the level of a premier inn. It’s one of the main plus points of a hotel for me
3) Breakfast MUCH worse then a premier inn, basic terrible bread, long-life fruit juice, horrible coffee and most crucially just horribly rugby scrum level busy
4) The pictures of the suite on the website indicated a spacious room with period features and a similarly good size sitting room with a sofa bed. Ours was an odd corridor with three tiny rooms and 1990s style purple painted walls styled with a grey stripy carpet and an entrance hall with textured white wallpaper. It looked like a terrible Airbnb aimed at students. No wardrobes at all (presumably as the rooms too small). No shower cap, cotton pads etc on the bathroom, no bubble bath or hair conditioner.
In conclusion, if it’s a place to sleep for your special weekend and the main attraction is not having to bother with a cab home at the end then it’s not bad. But I have had much much more comfortable stays in a Premier Inn and certainly nicer breakfast experiences.
Again, staff are wonderful

We booked a black November deal for a one night stay in early January to celebrate my partner's 30th birthday and we couldn't have been happier with the level of service, quality and value for money. The deal included one night stay, full use of the spa facilities, 2 course evening meal and breakfast. We booked a refurbished room which was clean and well maintained. The bed was very comfortable and the location of the room was quiet, meaning a good night's sleep. The only problem with the room was that the tv didn't turn on? Could have just been me. The spa facilities were clean and tidy. Robes, towels and flip flops were provided at no extra cost. The outdoor infinity pool is by far the highlight along with having prosecco by the glass readily available from the spa bar, who would want to complain about that. I would say the only thing to improve on would be having the empty glasses removed from around the edge of the infinity pool as these did build up quite quickly, rendering the bar with no appropriate glasses to serve your drinks in. The evening meal was well prepared, you can tell they have a good chef as the tortellini we had was freshly made and the steak was cooked to perfection. A bit slow on the drink service however. Breakfast was help yourself to full English, Continental and a range of tea and filter coffee / speciality coffees like cappuccino and flat white. We paid £149.00 for the night which includes all the above and couldn't have been more pleased for the price, which is an absolute bargain. I honestly cannot fathom some of the negativity with some of the reviews, obviously some people don't know how to enjoy themselves I guess.. 😄

I feel sad to be writing this review but this was honestly the worst spa experience I have ever had. My friend and I booked a dawn spa back in September as a present to ourselves and we were really looking forward to a relaxing weekend together. Unfortunately the experience was as far from relaxing as it could be.
Everything was cold!! The outdoor infinity pool, the indoor pool, the hot tub....all Luke warm. The changing rooms were freezing, and it was too cold to lie on the beds by the pool to read. The sauna has loose floor boards and we watched numerous people stumble and stub their toe during the time that we spent trying to warm up in the sauna. After feeling incredibly underwhelemed and cold, we made the decision to leave the spa after less than half an hour.
The front of the house and the entrance hall looked so beautiful but dont be fooled by this. The place is so tired and run down in places, it fell so short of the luxury experience we thought we were paying for. The shower in the bedroom took almost 10 mins to warm up, and breakfast was dry and warm.
Staff were super polite and friendly and able to direct us in how to make a complaint. I'm sure we were far from the only people complaining as we met many dissatisfied customers in the spa who were also complaining about the cold.

We stayed here on Saturday 11th January for one night on a spa package for my daughter’s birthday. I have never done a ‘spa experience’ before so I don’t have anything to compare to, however, I’m quite sure that at the minimum it should be clean and warm! The changing rooms were absolutely baltic when we went in never mind after when we were wet!! The inside of the spa was also cold, was not enjoyable to lounge with a book and the water in the outside pool was certainly not 38!! It was that cold it might it impossible to enjoy and there was pools of cold water on the floor which was horrid. We both had a treatment which was a facial and we went and got changed and fully clothed for it as we were so cold! The facial was nice and my skin felt amazing afterwards but there’s no relaxing music and you can hear the heater and outside noise which ruins the relaxation. We had a light bit in the spa cafe which was humous and flat bread and took 40 mins! Also had no hot chocolate which would have been lovely to warm up a bit. The room was absolutely VILE! I complained about the first one we got and we were moved and the lad on reception very nicely agreed to refund me half my money as he had no equivalent room (one that had been refurbished) but I thought as long as it’s clean I don’t care and didn’t think it could be worse… how wrong I was!! The second room was DISGUSTINGLY VILE, I have honestly never been somewhere so filthy, I have stayed in cleaner hostels in Blackpool!! It was so bad! There was pot noodle splattered up the wall, I don’t think it had been hoovered for months, there was a toenail on the floor that was not ours, the dust on everything was ridiculous it was so thick! There was old urine round the toilet and the hinges, the bath was mouldy, I found a random hat stuffed down the side of the drawers caked in dust and filth, there was stains all over the bathroom door and every corner had pubic curly hair and filth in it. It was just absolutely horrendous, it actually made my skin crawl. We were out of there as soon as we could in the morning and it completely ruined the entire getaway! This can not possibly be a 4 star hotel! I would not even say this is a 1 star! It needs blowing up and rebuilding! Please avoid at all costs! It’s not even cheap at nearly £400 for one night with spa and breakfast and it must be a health hazard. Even as you walk round the hotel it looks tired and battered, the carpets are all worn, even in the restaurant, the walls are scuffed and peeling and the doors have marks all over them. It’s just in dire need of closing down and renovating! The staff were all lovely who I spoke to that it is the only positive thing I can say. Please please book somewhere else.

Have previously visited Shrigley through work and recommended to my friend for a relaxing girlie Spa break. When we arrived we went for our treatments, Jenny and Suzanne were great and made the Spa experience very relaxing. We then went to use the facilities. We found the changing room small, especially as there appeared to be several large groups of ladies on hen do’s. The ladies toilet had an overflowing sanitary bin, and not kept clean. The tables and surrounding areas of the infinity pool were not cleared, with glasses and plates on tables, on the floor and on the side of the pool, the pool itself was lovely with great views. We then decided to beat the rush and left the pool early in anticipation of a busy changing room, considering all the people at the pool. We checked in, greeted by a lovely young man, unfortunately didn’t get his name. He was helpful and friendly. The first room we were allocated was lovely and light, but unfortunately the tv didn’t turn on. We then got moved to a poxy little dark room. We accepted this and continued, although it was all dated, the taps were old, there was a damp patch on the wall. We went to the bar, as we were unable to get a table for our dinner, at a reasonable time. The bar staff weren’t great, I stood for 10 minutes whilst one of the bar staff talked to some guys before he decided to serve them without even acknowledging my presence, I only wanted a menu. We eventually ordered despite being told we werent able to have our food in the bar. We of course challenged it and informed them that the Reception had said we were able to, as we were t able to book a table at a reasonable time. The food was ok. We ordered our dessert which don’t arrive after half hour so we had to chase it, we were then given a half effort apology and offer of some Prosecco. We declined, but no other offer of drinks, soft or perhaps tea or coffee for the inconvenience. In the meantime, despite being friends for over 40 years it dawned on us we were due to share a double bed, so we went to reception to inform them of our twin room booking, of which there were none available. We were provided with a 3rd room to accommodate us. Room was lovely but we could hear the guests slamming doors at 4 am, alongside a domestic. At approx 6am it sounded like the grass being cut outside…?? Breakfast was ok, slightly chaotic as even though we attended at 9.30, food and drink weren’t being replenished without having to request. Tables were uncleared, and staff appeared to be wandering around aimlessly. Overall disappointed in the customer service, I work in a very customer focus business, and know that it doesn’t take much to make an ok experience into a great one. Shrigley Hall is set in a beautiful idyllic setting, with beautiful peacocks but we felt let down by the whole costly experience. My friend and I came to celebrate our birthdays, we come away to pause being Mum for 24 hours.

Booked double room for family wedding two years prior to event. I have a mobility issue and wanted to ensure I could book a disabled access room. Was told that there were no disabled access rooms but that I could have a room with a walk in shower which I accepted. During online check in I added a note as a reminder. When we checked in I was told that I had a bath in the room and that the hotel didn't have any disabled access rooms. I explained that this room was totally unsuitable and was offered another room with a walk in shower but that I would have to walk both up and down stairs and that it was quite a distance. I explained that this would not be suitable either. When I arrived at the room I checked the bath but there was no way I would have been safe to climb into the bath without a high risk of a fall and possibly ending up with a fracture or traumatic brain injury. I had the wedding dress overnight in my room and also presents for the bride for the morning of her wedding so I needed to be in the hotel otherwise I would have demanded a refund and gone home. The weather was very warm and I had to go without a shower for two days. I felt sweaty, sticky and unclean which had a detrimental effect on my enjoyment of what should have been such a special day. The hotel in general and room especially were dated with worn carpets and old looking furniture.
The following morning I went for breakfast and asked what was available which was gluten free as medically I am unable to eat gluten (it is not a choice). I was told to stay away from the sausages and that the hash browns were gluten free but were cooked with everything else. I said that meant they were not gluten free but was told by the staff member that they were definitely gluten free which shows a complete lack of understanding of managing food allergies and cross contaminiation. I cannot understand why each item cannot be cooked on it's own baking tray and then it would remain gluten free. For the two mornings I had fruit and gluten free toast which was adequate but on the morning of the wedding I had wanted something more substantial as we wouldn't be eating until late afternoon.
However, on a positive note I would say that the venue for the wedding itself was lovely and the wedding breakfast and evening buffet catered for my dietary needs.
For a hotel of this size and rating, I cannot understand why they cater so poorly for those with a mobilty issue. Yes, there is a lift but to only some of the room and those are entirely unsuitable and could potentially be unsafe for guests. I have stayed in similar aged properties (one that didn't even have a lift!) but they still had rooms converted for disabled access and the one without a lift had a beautiful downstairs room with an excellent wet room so it can be done.
In this time of equality and meeting the needs of others, it's about time that the hotel took a serious look at itself and how it should be meeting the needs of ALL their guests.

I wanted to say a big thank you to the team at Shrigley Hall for helping our wedding be the most magical day. Everything was perfect from the start to the finish and all of our wedding guests commented on how special the day was from the food, to the service and nothing being to much trouble.
We first attended the Wedding Fair in Jan 2021 and we fell in love with it straight away.
We booked a date for 29th Dec 2023 and Paige was our Wedding Coordinator. Nothing was to much trouble and she was always quick at replying to emails answering any questions. If she was off, Nicole would assistance in her absence too. Paige also sorted out a bouquet error on the morning of the wedding (as we was one short) and saved the day making sure all the bridesmaid had a bouquet each.
Eamon was our Toast Master and he made such a big effort with all our family and friends. Everyone talked about him for days after and how amazing he was. He was the sweetest man, so pleasant and friendly, nothing was to much trouble for him.
The food was incredible, all our guest commented on how nice everything was. We went for the Slow cooked Beef Angel with red wine jus, mash and veg and the meat just fell apart. Tomato soup to start and choc brownie for dessert. Everything was hot and cooked to perfection.
Around 13 of us stayed the night before and the night after, we pre-ordered food and everything was spot on with no mix-ups.
We booked the 'All Wrapped Up Package' and paid the extra fee for the Tilden Suite. Precious Things did our flowers and room dressing, it was absolutely stunning. Horgans Cars provided an excellent service too.
Overall and incredible day, we wish we could do it all over again.
Thank you to the team for making the day everything we wanted and more. Shirgley will always hold a special place in our hearts.
Jenni & Steven Lunt xx

We stayed at Shrigley Hall Hotel & Spa to celebrate our anniversary in January 2023. We chose it because we wanted somewhere close to home which offered a Spa and luxury hotel in lovely surroundings. The hotel is housed in a beautiful Regency building with lovely, original features, especially the tall windows with far reaching views and the decorative plasterwork. The majority of staff were polite, friendly and efficient. We were disappointed on several points, but our Premier room was not one of them. Furnished to a comfortable, high standard with a balcony and views over the surrounding countryside, it was just what we expected. Sadly, the rest of our stay did not live up to this standard, most notably the dining facilities, which, with bright lighting, formica topped tables, cheap tableware and limited poorly cooked choice of food, was not what we expected. It was very disappointing. But worse was to come in the spa. No internal access from the hotel. Unclean areas. The necessity to book your hour long treatment during the 4 hour limited access to the spa. Disappointing and dried up choice of sandwiches in the bar where staff were curt, seating cheap and uncomfortable and the log burner unlit in January. However, the outdoor large jacuzzi was lovely and the architecture of the converted church which houses the spa complex was impressive. In the spa, the women’s changing rooms were unheated with only cold water in the showers. Staff pretended they knew nothing about this but when I checked reviews, customers had been complaining of the problem for at least 5 weeks! There was no record of our having booked a couples massage and where my masseur was professional and courteous, my husband’s therapist was surly and uncommunicative. Not remotely a pampering or relaxing experience (I never warmed up after the cold changing area) Overall, in the spa,it felt as though nobody could give a damn. This place should be so much more than it is and we wont be returning.
