We stayed at Sleepy Bear Cabins back in 2019 and had a wonderful experience. We were excited when we booked another stay for 2021. It was our understanding that the cabins changed ownership in 2020. There was a drastic difference in our experiences. This time, we experienced dirty cabins and equipment that failed. In addition, we were accused of damages that were unavoidable due to the condition of the items. This year, we again booked all 3 cabins. My family stayed in the Brown cabin. Upon arrival, I attempted to settle in and unfolded the hideaway bed in the couch only to find sheets that were covered in dirt and even contained what we identified as a vape cartridge. My husband spoke with the owners and they came and cleaned the hideaway bed and provided new sheets. We were very appreciative and understanding about this because we know that there can be oversights. However, we then spoke with other members of our family who were staying in the Grizzly and Kodiak cabins. They too experienced trash and dirty beds. One member of our family had animal hair covering the bedding. Another found garbage scattered underneath one of the beds. The cabins were not stocked well with toiletries that we would need for our almost week-long stay (hand soap, dish soap, garbage bags, toilet paper). The grill that was provided did not contain all functioning parts. The air conditioner in the main part of the Grizzly cabin did not blow any cold air. During our 5-night stay, the water quit working on us twice. We had members of our group who couldn’t shower because you never knew when the water would turn off. When we did have water, the pressure was terrible. The Wi-Fi was basically non-existent. Only in the Brown cabin could you connect to Wi-Fi. We wanted to be good guests and not complain, so we tried not to be nit-picky. Instead of being difficult about the dirty bedding, a few members of our group drove to Walmart an hour away in the middle of the night to purchase our own sheets and pillows. We also purchased our own hand soap, dish soap, and cleaning supplies. These purchases cost us more than $500. In addition, we were disappointed in the condition (or lack of) patio furniture that had previously been there. The pictures on the Sleepy Bear Cabin Facebook page do not reflect their current setup and condition. The indoor furniture was also in poor condition. The surface of the recliners was peeling off and left a mess on the floor. In hindsight, we should have notified the owners of our concerns when they happened. After check out, we received an email accusing us of damages. We understood that some of their accusations could have been our fault because of the number of individuals in our group, however, there were things they accused us of that were not our doing. For example, we were accused of tearing up flooring. This was not done by us. We had moved a bed a few inches to make more room and hadn’t returned it to its original spot prior to leaving. During their cleaning, they tore up their own floor moving the bed back. We had received no instructions on what needed done prior to checking out, so we decided to leave it for the owners to put it back where they wanted it (during our previous stay, we had been provided with a well-organized binder with the expectations of our stay and what to do for check-out). Another “damage” we were accused of was breaking a curtain rod. An adult member of our group had removed the curtains in an effort to expose the air conditioners more (see issue with the air conditioner above). The curtain rod was not broken in any way, but was just removed from the hooks. There was also a free-standing panel that covered the water heater. We remembered this panel from our stay back in 2019. It has spent at least 2 years in a hot, humid hallway. It was accidently knocked over by a member of our group and broke. We were accused of damaging this as well even though it was in a very poor and weak condition to begin with. After being contacted about these damages, my husband called to discuss it with the owners. He acknowledged that they had some concerns that we should take responsibility for, but my husband also tried to address some of their accusations that we didn’t feel we should be held accountable for. In addition, my husband attempted to address the concerns we had about our stay, but was rudely talked over and told that we were no longer welcome to stay there and they would also be letting their friends in the area know about us as well. We have vacationed in several areas over the years and have never been accused of damages like the Sleepy Bear Cabins has accused us of. We were very disappointed in the condition of the cabins when we arrived and that the owners were not willing to listen to us voice these concerns after we left. We were very unhappy with our poor experience this time around because we had enjoyed our stay with the previous owners. Despite the uncleanliness and condition of the cabins, our biggest concern is that we were unable to discuss these with them. Our recommendations to future guests – take your own bedding and record any damage at the beginning of your stay.

We booked these cabins for a 5 day student program and they were great. The owners are on site and very friendly. They are very helpful and attentive to the needs of their guests whether its blankets, firewood, or other comforts, they made sure we had everything we needed for a successful week . Fun bear theme throughout the cabins. Its not a large property and is along the main road but it is quiet at night and all the cabins have nice outdoor seating areas to relax and watch the stars.

After 50 years of camping and enjoying this beautiful river and area, our family decided to move to cabins. Most others could not accommodate our size group, but booking all 3 cabins did the job for us and at a wonderful price. Cabins were clean, well-appointed, had comfortable beds, and Grizzly provided the perfect gathering place for all. Susan and Bill were wonderful hosts. Can’t recommend this place enough!! A wonderful find!!
