What a brilliant experience for the whole family. The marine biologist who took the tour was fantastic , so informative & friendly. We all came away with something new we had learned. The sting ray feeding & touching was so different & gave us a completely different perspective on these creatures! The underwater observatory was enjoyed by all, loved the...

I spent months saving to take our kids on a memorable holiday to the South Island. I saw the pictures of Lochmara and thought wow, it looks like a luxury resort! We kept the trip a mystery from the kids. When we got to the Ferry terminal they we really excited to be exploring the waters. We arrived in Picton...

This was our third trip to Lochmara Lodge. I was thrilled to see they've implemented an artificial reef. It's a great way to see some interesting underwater creatures. However, I was a bit disappointed in what seemed to me to be some neglect to the walking trails around the lodge, specifically to the "art work". I loved visiting with the...

I was really looking forward to staying here, so much so that we planned a detour from out Queen Charlotte trek to stay here for two nights. I think my expectations were probably too high. Lochmara is great for families with kids, but not really a romantic place for couples in my opinion. We booked the bellbird unit (room 1),...

We have been a few times to this place, we always travel using our own boat. The team are really good at helping mooring and transporting us to the wharf. The location is top notch and there are plenty of things to do once you are there. We always go for lunch so the food is the main reason for...

You need to make bookings by calling to book on the boat for the trip there and back. The boat left on time and it's a nice ride, about 15 mins. The fee for the day to the Island and return boat trip was $60 per adult. Not cheap but you can see there has been a lot of work...

We recently spent the weekend at Lochmara Lodge, a great location just a short boat-ride from Picton. The accommodation was great, with a great view out over the water. There is a lot going on at Lochmara, it would be easy to pass an afternoon just wandering the grounds and looking at some of the cool art out there. I...

The worst place we have been to new zealand. Not worth going on this island. Stinky and a lot of rubbish - tourists should better take care. We did an excursion with our kids (aged 3.5 and 5). They promised us animal feeding and a nice place for children. Not true at all. Better go to see dolphines then going...

We took a day trip to lochmara from picton. The short trip across on the boat is a good way of seeing some of the sounds especially with children that may be board on one of the longer boat trips. At the lodge we fed the stingrays from the shore, fed the pigs, eels, chickens and kakariki. There are kayaks...

Lovely accommodation and outstanding food service. Catered for dietary issues happily. Well worth wandering the grounds. Internet allowance was a nice surprise in the back of beyond. If you have time a couple can rent the bathhouse for a romantic soak with a view. I would highly recommend this. Make space for this in your trip. 10km from Portage.

“We stayed in one of the bluebird double units - of which there are only two, I believe. If booking one of these, room number one has the better water view. If booking a "fantail family unit" which are in the same location, room numnber 3 has the better water view.”
