Ashworth by the Sea offers a varied atmosphere that many find inviting and lively, though a few guests note a more basic ambiance and noise concerns. Its prime beachside location is frequently praised, as are the pet-friendly amenities and dining options, despite some maintenance gripes.
While rooms are acknowledged for their cleanliness and comfort, their size and upkeep occasionally disappoint. The hotel's cleanliness and attentive service are highlights for guests, even as the additional fees and value are debated topics among reviewers.

Decided to visit the ashworth for my birthday weekend, Id stayed here in the past and enjoyed it.
The good: the staff are all superb. Friendly and always willing to help, everyone from the valet to the front desk staff
We’re so pleasant.
The location is great, right across from the beach and close walk down the boulevard to all the attractions.
The bad: the cleanliness of the room was terrible. During a pandemic I would have expected the room to be pristine when we arrived but I found dirty shower curtains and tub, hair in the sink and the bathroom door looked like it hadn’t been washed for months. I would have complained but figured I’d be moved to another dirty room and luckily I took my own cleaning supplies and had scrubbed it myself.
We were not provided with housekeeping for the time we were there but still charged full price for the room and a service fee.
I would have expected the rooms to be spotless since it was closed for some time they had plenty of time to deep clean and disinfect.
I will be hesitant to return due to the subpar cleaning process.

We are happy to hear you enjoyed our staff during your stay. Our staff does an excellent job going out of there way to help guests. We are saddened to hear we missed the mark in your room during your stay. Pandemic or not our rooms should be spotless and I will be reviewing this with our housekeeping team so we can continue to grow and better the department Sincerely, Thomas Anderson

For the fast few years our daughter has given my husband and I a weekend at the Ashworth. Each time seem to be even better than the last. This year was no exception. The staff is so friendly and courteous, the hotel just smells so clean. We were there the weekend before everything came to a stop at the bars and restaurants, so checking in we were a little apprehensive about the cleanliness but upon entering our beautiful Oceanfront room, all our doubts subsided. The bed smelled fresh and clean, everything was perfect. We had the pleasure of spending a lot of time sitting at the bar relaxing with cocktails and our bartenders ( Mark, Bob, and sweet Tayla) were very attentive and so friendly. Although it was off season we enjoyed just staying at the hotel and chilled out. If you need a place to unwind after all the chaos settles from this CoronaVirus...please spend some time at the Ashworth, you won’t be disappointed.

The room was comfortable for the two of us, and the location of the hotel made our traveling around the town and the beach was convenient. We were able to eat at the Breakers one night. Cynthia was our server, and she was excellent. She was attentive, and was able to communicate special cooking requests for my meal to the chef. Everything was cooked perfectly, delicious, and we were so glad that we were able to eat there. The one drawback to the trip for me was that we were in a room next to another full room. The walls are very thin. We were able to hear the other guests tv on throughout the night, loud conversation, and other misc. noise. It made falling asleep difficult for me. It was the off season, with not many guests in the hotel. I think that they could place people in non-adjacent rooms during the off season because of this.

Hi Z6412XScarolyna, Thank you very much for this outstanding review. We are extremely excited to hear that you had an enjoyable time while staying here at the Ashworth by the Sea. Cynthia is definitely a fan favorite in our Breakers Restaurant and Bar which is conveniently located right here on property. Thank you for the input regarding the soundproofing of our rooms. We will be completing some room improvements this offseason in which we will be addressing no only the soundproofing but giving the entire guest rooms a nice refresh. We hope to see you if you are in the Hampton area again! Sincerely, Ryan Connors General Manager

The once “Crown Jewel” of Hampton Beach has lost its luster and fallen to the like of many properties. In the past The Ashworth by the Sea was the “go to place” where you could be certain of an extremely clean room impeccable dining and ideal location. However it’s sad to say its day is numbered.
As we arrived excited to begin our stay at the Ashworth, a place we’ve stayed for over 40 years, our excitement began to deteriorate rapidly as the reception at the front was less than inviting. After being rudely acknowledged my wife was greeted with “ID and credit card” that’s it, no happy to see you as in the past nothing just very uninviting.
When my wife was asked for the reservation she provided them with the on-line document/reservation explaining that she had made arrangements on-line.
We were presented with a document to sign and quickly noticed that the “deluxe king room with ocean view” was unavailable as “someone” over booked. After a short uncomfortable conversation with the front desk it became painfully obvious that individual we were dealing with had no evidence of the room we booked was unavailable, just simply stated that he had no idea what to do” we were offered a “standard king room” the SAME PRICE we paid for the deluxe and was told that I would have to take up the issue with price line.
Once again we have been staying at the Ashworth for over 40 years and my parents for over 60. Although we have noticed in the past that some of the amenities as well as the rooms have not been as inviting as in the past although we felt it was perhaps our imagination, Needless to say it wasn’t.
As we first received our keys with the room number we went up and soon found that so little care was take the incorrect room number was on the envelope. As we entered the room, with now the correct room number, what we noticed was far from what we experienced in the past. The room was dirty the bathroom had no bath paper and only two towels were in the rack.
After a night out we returned and had to “bother” the front desk for some additional bath towels the individual appeared to be upset that she had to walk 20 feet to obtain the towels.
The next day we went out and about and once again returning and planned on cleaning up to go out for dinner and as we entered the room we noticed that there was NO maid service as the bed was no made and no attention was given to the bathroom.
Once again we went to the front desk and asked if by chance they forgot our room. The answer was “NO” as maid service is not provided for guests staying two nights, needless to say upsetting.
At that moment I asked what the $40.00 a night “resort fee” was? It was explained the charge was for the opportunity to use the hotels folding chairs and a bottle of water….
As we left the property on our last night needless to say we started exploring a new place to stay in the future as the once queen of the beach has left the building

Dear Pauljeromej, First and foremost, thank you for being a loyal customer of Ashworth by the Sea! Your review has assisted our Management team in identifying areas of improvement. I am so sorry that you did not feel welcomed by our front desk. We always strive to create a welcoming and positive experience for all of our customers. Additionally, I can understand how not receiving the reserved room type, can be a frustrating experience. Our team works hard to present clean rooms with the appropriate amenities and we are disappointed that the room was not up to standards. It is accurate that the hotel is temporarily providing limited housekeeping services. This is however, no excuse for the lack of attention to your guest room and the information you shared about our front desk response. During the months of April – October, the hotel does charge resort and valet parking fees. The Resort Fee includes hi-speed wireless internet, rental of beach chairs, use of our indoor pool and exercise facility. We are saddened to know that a loyal customer feels the way you do and hope that you give us another chance to provide the service that The Ashworth by the Sea is known for! Should you wish to discuss your stay with us further, please feel free to contact me at emenard@ashworthhotel.com or contact our General Manager - Ryan at: rconnors@ashworthhotel.com or by phone: 603-926-6762, X 615. Where to begin?? First, don't be fooled by the be 4/5 rating here...it's extremely deceptive.
Came to the room where it smelled musty, the beds were wrinkled and it looked like the bed and pillow cases had just been used. The toilet got stuck right away, the AC would go on and then off randomly throughout the night, the "side ocean view" we booked was a view of a rusty old stained rooftop of some kind, the pool "was closed this weekend", no breakfast, no attempt at a decent breakfast, we were given a $10 voucher for lunch but were told "limit one per room" even though it was two of us. Beside all that, it was a great stay...NOT. My wife was disappointed as it was our anniversary, and the hotel knew that. What's even better they charged us about $300 for the night and that by the way was a "discounted" rate. This is a bait and switch. PLEASE DO NOT go here if you want to have an enjoyable stay. We should've stayed at the Marriott, Double Tree or Holiday Inn as always and just driven to the beach!! Awful, awful, awful.

Hello, We are saddened to hear you did not enjoy your stay with us. Your stay took place on the first day hotels were able to open in New Hampshire after an almost 3-month long pandemic shut down. On opening day we swept through the hotel freshening up linens the best we could as most sat on the beds during that time period. During your June stay, Temperatures can fluctuate almost 20 degrees. As most AC's do, they turn on and off once the desired room temperature has been reached, which happened in your room as you described because the temperature changed at night time. As the description states, you were in a side balcony room, so yes the rooftop was right outside your room but to the side was the ocean. We were still very much so in a "Stay at home order" during your stay which did not allow us to open for indoor dining, have any public areas open ( you may have noticed the lack of furniture in the lobby) or open our pool. We are happy to announce as of June 15th we were able to open the pool and both restaurants for indoor dining. Since all of these were closed we offered a free $10 towards our rooftop bar which we are sorry to hear you did not appreciate. We invite you to come back to the Ashworth now that we are just about fully open to see that we truly are one of Hampton beaches best hotels Sincerely, Thomas Anderson General Manager

We paid $350/night for our room at Ashworth by the Sea, and we weren't expecting anything fancy. We arrived in our room and immediately saw several long brown hairs on and under the pillows. There was also an unidentified brown object under one of the pillows that thoroughly disgusted us. We took photos and went back down to the front desk to request that our sheets be changed. The front desk worker was very apologetic, and we were told that someone would be up to change the sheets.
20 minutes later, a man from housekeeping arrived and we showed him the hairs on the bed. He looked at the hairs and told us that they had been washed, so it was okay. He did not apologize or seem to think that there was a problem with hairs being on a supposedly clean bed. We did not tell him about the brown object under the pillow because we wanted to see if he would actually changed the sheets. He told us he would go grab some sheets and change them for us.
Not wanting to wait any longer, we went out to the beach and returned a few hours later. We checked under the pillow, and we still found the brown object, which means that it is impossible that he actually changed our sheets. We went back down to the front desk and reported this and were told someone else would be up to change our sheets. Eventually the front desk worker came up himself and changed the sheets. He was very nice, and honestly seemed to be the only employee who cared at all that we encountered at Ashworth. He ended up refunding our valet and resort fee, which we appreciated.
The hotel is extremely old and not well-maintained. There were stains all over the floor in our room, crumbs on the floor, sand in the bathtub, and huge rips in the curtains. The overall feel at the hotel was one of laziness and lack of caring about the rooms or those staying in them. The only reason we are giving 2 stars instead of 1 is because of the kind front desk employee who helped us with the bed situation.
For a 3 star hotel, the bare minimum that one can expect is a clean room, but we didn't even get that at Ashworth. I would not recommend staying there if you can avoid it.

This place was way overpriced. I don't normally write bad reviews because I feel you get what you pay for in most cases. Depending on price, amenities, pictures, etc. I usually have a realistic expectation of cleanliness, services, etc. But in this case, the pictures, the location and the price made my expectations high for our stay. What a let down.
It reminded me of the before and after of the hotel from the movie 'Hot Tub Time Machine'. I'm sure this place was amazing once, but it's not anymore, so they need to stop filtering their pictures online and start charging a fair price for what they're offering here.
I booked a double bed room with partial ocean view. Both mattresses were very worn and uncomfortable. The room felt damp and the carpet was dirty, we were unable to walk on it with bare feet or socks. Flip flops on right from the shower! There was no service to the rooms...no bed making, emptying of trash cans, etc. There were not enough towels and toilet paper, had to go to the front desk for these. There were dirty dishes outside the elevator on the 3rd floor the duration of our stay. The restaurants on site were closed both days we were there. The one morning they offered a continental breakfast because of this I guess but we opted out. The pool area is outdated. They advertise a heated pool but really the pool room is heated but the water is average temp. The roof top deck/cafe was closed while we were there but a bag of trash was left behind. The 2 days we were there we sat and watched seagulls pick apart the trash and scatter it all over the deck just below our balcony.
The women at the front desk were all very sweet. The man in the office who brought towels out to me after I called down was pretty rough/rude. They only offered valet parking and we never had to wait more than 2 minutes for our car so that was nice. All the men at valet were nice and helpful.
2 good things about this place is the location and the free beach chairs that I assume are probably first come first serve. But I was shocked that they didn't charge us to use them as they were pretty nice chairs.
Bottom line, unless you can get a room in the 100-200 dollar a night range, I would not recommend.

Diana P, I thank you for your honest review. It is disappointing that you did not enjoy your stay with us! We are temporarily providing limited housekeeping services, as we are currently facing some staffing challenges. If you were not informed of this upon check in, I greatly apologize and this will be addressed with our desk associates. We will also address the additional issues that you mentioned with the appropriate staff members. Thank you so much for the kind words about the front desk ladies and valet. Location is key as The Ashworth by the Sea is New Hampshire's only beachfront hotel and is a historic icon of Hampton Beach. Very disappointed. We spent 2 nights king size bed, oceanfront with a balcony the room looked like it needed a good scrubbing. Front desk staff very friendly. We paid $419 night plus the hotel charge a $20 resort fee and $25 a day park. Returning to our room on our first night their was a sign near the elevator that the restaurant and bar would be closed the next day. We spent next day at the beach and returned to room around 330pm. The room had not been touched, no towels replenished, no water replenished, no trash removed or bed made. Inquired at the desk and was informed they are not having housekeeping services. Towels were provided upon request and I could help myself to the water in the refrigerator. I told the young clerk we should have been told upon arrival no services were provided, no comment provided. Upon checkout I again expressed my displeasure with no services provided plus with the resort fee and the price of room it was not acceptable. In the end the hotel refunded the resort fee though I feel they should have done more. I do not like to write negative reviews however the amount of money they charge and calling themselves a resort was very disappointing. I hope they can do better in the future because the location is great.

Response from Eileen Menard, Sales at Ashworth by the Sea

Dear ndupont21, I am very sorry to hear about your disappointment regarding your recent stay. Thank you for your kind comments about the front desk staff and location. The Ashworth by the Sea Hotel sits just steps from the beach and ocean and is within close proximity to alternate dining, shopping and summer activities. We have experienced some staffing challenges like many, leaving us with no other choice to close the restaurant on certain days and temporarily limit our housekeeping services. This is not however, an excuse for the lack of cleanliness inside your guest room or the desk failing to inform you of the limited housekeeping services, upon check in. We hope that you return to Ashworth by the Sea in the future and give us another opportunity to provide excellent customer service and a clean room! Please feel free to contact our General Manager - Ryan at: rconnors@ashworthhotel.com or by phone 603-926-6762, X 615 if you would like to further discuss your stay. If you would like to consider booking a future stay, please contact me at emenard@ashworthhotel.com to discuss how we can enhance your experience! Sincerely, Eileen Menard - Director of Sales & Catering

I'm disappointed. For the amount you spend, I expected more/better. My friends room smelled like heavy weed due to the people below since vent"S" do not work. This is the 2nd yr in a row where the pool room again has no towels. Also, this yr the pool door was broken, no security cards needed. So any Joe of the street can walk in. Lastly, I've always felt that for the amount you pay, the owners should give it a better curb appeal. The original building just looks old and trashy from the outside. No microwaves in room. No more k cups. Don't be fooled, on line pictures always look better than what it is. A tip for the owners...I think you should add a jacuzzi near the pool. If you could fix all that, then this would be a 5 star hotel. The only plus is that customer service is nice (not quick but nice), it's on the main strip and right in front of the ocean. Maybe thats enough to charge the high prices.🤷‍♀️ Idk

We are sorry to hear you were disappointed in your stay. We apologies about the pool towels . Unfortunately these towels always seem to disappear but you will be happy to hear we just received 6 dozen pool towels this last week. Unfortunately the moisture in the pool room short circuited the lock and we are waiting on a new one to have this fixed. We set aside money in the budget every year for improvements and will consider a hot tub in this years review. We have a few upgrades coming this year that will improve the curb appeal as you mentioned. Look for update posts on our social media as they will be occurring in the next couple of months. We hope you will visit us again to see the improvements! Sincerely, Thomas Anderson

Situated directly across the street from beautiful Hampton Beach and just steps to the famed boardwalk, Ashworth by the Sea’s location is top notch. However, if you’re planning a visit to this New England summer jewel, definitely find another place from which to enjoy your respite.
From the brash guest services manager to the gruff, unprofessional valet, the services were substandard if not outright deplorable. While not perhaps part of the hotel, the connected restaurant, Breakers, provided the same level of experience. Seated at 5:45 for dinner, our order was finally served at 7:40 after multiple tables had been seated, ate and departed while we waited.
Beyond service were the unfortunate accommodations themselves. It did not take a black light (nor would I suggest you use one here for fear of adding your own vomit to the already unhygienic conditions) to see the rooms were not up to even pre-Covid cleanliness standards. The bathtub was full of dirt and grime. Hair that did not match any of us clogged and protruded from the sink drain. It was obvious by the amount of dirt under the room’s furniture that a cursory attempt at best was made in cleaning the floor. And best of all, some type of dried glob (not going to guess at this one) adorned the television remote.
It is a rare thing where such a perfect location can’t make up for shabby conditions. And if these were merely shabby, Ashworth by the Sea’s location certainly would. But conditions are well beyond that. Let my experience be a warning if not a guide and avoid suffering a stay here at any cost.
