It was a lovely environment in the Black Creek Sanctuary but the property is very confusing. We initially were on the wrong side and later learned the addresses were the same on both streets there.

We tried our best to follow the map given to us but had a hard time confirming where we were supposed to be. Our first attempt we see people in the unit we think is our unit, so we try the upstairs and the keys don't work. Front desk tells us to come back and get new cards.

We get new key cards, this time I assume one of the property managers follows us and tries the same place we just were, talks to the tenants who have a lease downstairs and says they will see what is going on with our accommodations, we go back to the check in hotel.

In 3-4 attempts to figure this out, there was never a mention of checking on the other side of the property. Could've avoided a lot of headaches and waiting around. Maybe they should've labeled one street "A" or "B" for the same unit address. We ended up in a different unit than we were initially expecting but seemed to be about the same.

When we were finally in the right place and figured it out ourselves, other guests were waiting outside of our unit, they were in the wrong place as well. We saw a few groups do the same thing.

It is very confusing there but otherwise no complaints. They handled as best they could but should've just mentioned/known that address existed twice on the same property. If you are considering renting, make sure to know which street you are supposed to be on - Pine or Maple. If you feel like you're in the wrong place, that may just be it.

- Anyway, the 3 bed townhouse was a nice size, the unit was slightly outdated with carpet and some older finishings but was a nice space. The kitchen was very oddly stocked, there were about 7 frying pans, a grater and utensils but no sheet pans, no salt or pepper etc. There is a washer/dryer in the space and dishwasher, but both the dishwasher and fridge in our unit were leaking water.

It is a quiet area, there is a communal pool and hot tub, a trail to walk on by the water, and trees and mountains. It is very close to the main spot where the hotel is. Close proximity to Warwick and other Fall activities but Uber & Lyft barely exist, best to drive.

I would recommend this place for the price/accommodations if you have a group over 4 people.

We came here this week during February break. Upon arriving to Vernon, NJ, we learned oof a power outage affecting half of the town. We were originally staying at the townhomes called Black Sanctuary. The manager Heather offered us 2 one bedroom suites across the hall instead of the one two bedroom suite we had booked. The rooms were free the first night and price adjusted the second night. Upon entering our rooms, the power went out. All of Vernon had NO power because of ice/transformer issues. The hotel staff was so calm and gracious, from the front desk staff, the housekeepers, the ski patrol. They ordered in pizzas, gave us waters, hot chocolate etc. We opted to stay as the room was warm and it was late and dark. the power went on around 4 am. The next two days we had wonderful skiing. Everyone was so helpful. The rooms were spacious and clean, the equipment rental was a breeze (they help you put your boots on!!!), the lodge was very nice, the quick serve food was good. The elderly gentleman who seated was so friendly and nice. We had a great stay and I would come back in a heartbeat. We enjoyed the outdoor heated pool. Unfortunately, the hot tub was closed since it had to be serviced after the outage. I am so happy I did not change my plans based on previous reviews. This was a terrible thing to happen to a resort during an otherwise busy holiday week during a pandemic, but they handled it very gracefully.

The Appalachian Hotel has all the things you need as a ski resort lodging: proximity to the slopes, clean rooms, kitchenette, reasonable price. The room was very spacious and included an electric fireplace. It was the perfect place to relax and rest after a long day of snowboarding.

Part of our family stayed at black sanctuary community and part and Appalachian. Terrible service! We purchased package with water passes, most of slides closed, huge lines, limited safe guards. Water is extremely cold, kids were shriveling. No fun at all.
Now, managment!!! Worst ever! Manager Chris is never available, we encountered so many issues and no one want to be liable for anything.
1. Booked 1 bedroom townhouse , when arrived was handed key for Appalachian, manager called as we overpaid( changed 2 weeks before arrived reservation for black Creek sanctuary and paid extra $200 to stay in townhouse). Manager was called by very rude lady who mumbled smthg when we refused to be placed in cheaper room. Manager came , stated ‘ might be mistake”, I showed him reservation where clearly stated ‘ 1 bedroom townhouse’. He was fixing smthg on computer , than stated to come back at 5 pm as he found 2 bedroom townhouse available only for 1 night( we booked 2).
Well, making it short, we were given 2 bedroom, when arrived at townhouse- fridge was leaking, dryer made terrible noise. Everywhere webs with discussing bugs crawling. Well, we thought it’s only for 2 night so just bare with it... not so soon, next day we realized that fridge was not even working and all the food and meats got spoiled. Waited for half of day for repair guy who came , 5 min , said it fixed. Well it was still not working.
Now, fire pit . Kids where waiting for marshmallow , apparently Appalachian staff told smoke has to come to light it. Waited, no one came. Kids just fell asleep waiting for abt 3 hrs.
Next day again asked manager ( who where nowhere found by person), and staff to use fire pit. Told we can light it ourself , when came back k to black sanctuary. Apparently another manager from black sanctuary said they do not have permit and we can’t use it.
Oh, almost forgot there is NO WIFI, before atrival we called to verify there will be WiFi, fire pit we can use, swimming pool. All lies, we were sworn everything is there but when staying nothing was there...
Swimming pool opens at 12pm and only 10 people limit after you have register online( which we couldn’t do as Appalachian desk reservation service was down and multiple calls made with response ce’we are sorry’) so basically only residents who bought homes at that community could go.
It just disgusting experience, wham we were leaving manager again was not there, we told all our concerns to Alice( girl at reservation desk. ,she made a note), where told manager will call us. Guess, till now no calls, thought we called 3 days in row after left with same response manager not available, will call you back’

Good
Location, location, location! The heated underground, secure parking garage, the full set up in the kitchenette with cutlery, utensils, pots and pans to cook, etc., the bathroom is large and soaking tub is very deep
Bad
The bed was a brick and the mattress on sofa bed is only find for small kids, not even teens, the service was awful and check-in was very unfriendly, not welcoming at all, no masks on desk clerks at check in, request for a top floor in reservation was ignored, no Covid precautions anywhere in this hotel or on the mountain, no blanket in room for sofa bed, just sheets???? Big attitude when we requested a blanket, then. They said they didn’t have any???? Then they told us to come back to the front desk for them and then more attitude, elevators are tiny and only 2, no restaurant for hotel alone, just a small store where you can get a muffin or limited cereals, etc…wish I knew that, ski mountain cafeteria is insane and no where to sit so food is generally a struggle here, plan to make it in your room, generally very outdated, stained, scratched, old furniture in rooms, room set up is not functional once you pull out the sofa bed, fireplace generates no heat which is disappointing after a long day skiing, very dated, no cozy, quiet fireplaces in the hotel to curl up with a book, no chair in suites to do so either and forget the bed, honestly, I could just go on but you get the idea
Message to Management
I guess the business plan is to just appeal to the masses but so disappointing. When I went to check out and I said I am leaving early, she asked “was everything ok” and I replied “the beds are very hard and uncomfortable” and she said “yeah we get that a lot.” Wow, seriously??? She did not offer any kind of a refund or even get a manager to talk to me, it was just like ok see you later, someone else will take the room anyway. They are NOT a LUXURY hotel. Go to Bear Creek in Pa and see how it’s done!

If I could give this place 0/5 stars I would. When we got up with our room instead of having a king and a queen we had a king and two fulls, we were two couples so it wasn’t very ideal to have the wrong room. We also noticed it was very hot, when we finally were able to turn on the thermostat it was 85° in the room, we also realized we couldn’t turn on the fan or the A/C. We called the front desk and the women there told us we could turn the switch on in the wall ac and that should make it work. It did not, it made the room hotter, it was then 87° in the room. This was all while trying to get ready for a wedding. We contacted the front desk and they said they would send up maintenance. We then had to get ready in a family members room because it was too hot to stay in ours. Before we left for the wedding, I reached out to the man at the front desk and asked once again for maintenance to go to our room, they said they would contact me when they did. They never reached out, while at the wedding we had to initiate contact and reach out once again to the front desk to see if there was any updates. They informed us there were no updates and they could not provide us with anymore portable ACs or even fans. We were just suppose to sleep in a room that was 87°. The hallways were colder than all of our rooms. The only thing they could do was offer 15% off a $300 room. Which is ridiculous what half the people are sleeping in late august heat. When we asked if we would move rooms, they told us it wasn’t possible because they were sold out. We asked for a bigger discount and we had to wait until a supervisor was available. The next morning, the supervisor was at check out and had no idea about our issues and informed us she couldn’t do anything and had to go to higher ups if we wanted a bigger discount. Later that day they called to let us know they would give us 50% off the room and that it was dealt with. It’s now been 2 weeks and we were still charged $301. We called and they told us that there was a glitch in the system and that it didn’t go through but now it should. I do not believe there was a glitch but a lack of competence in the whole staff. I’ve never been so disappointed in a hotel stay and I’ve stayed in a hotel that was on fire and everyone had to be evacuated. I would never recommended this hotel to anyone and I will forever tell everyone what a horrible place it was. The rooms are too old and ugly to cost $300 for one night too. This is my first review I’ve ever posted, that’s how upsetting this experience was.
I was so overwhelmed by all of that I forgot to let them know my sheets had old blood and stains on them as well. Which was disgusting.

Like many slope side accommodations, this is not a hotel but a condo village. They don't have room service nor did they have a restaurant. The rooms were very nice but there was no hot water even though the place was empty. We were told that due to size of the place, it would take awhile. Well, water running the water for 20 minutes, barely warm was what we had. We arrived around 6:60 pm, had some drinks, and then found out there was no restaurant and all but the cafeteria in the ski lodge were closed. The only selections were under the heat lamp and seemed to be since after lunch. Not wanting to buzz drive, we spent $37 on food barely edible. The skiing made up for it; they have a variety of terrain and the runs interesting. But if I came again, I would not stay at their hotel.

I wanted to get soda from the machine which is pretty simple task. Their machine only takes coins but yet they have cashless policy. Makes zero sense. The ATM only gives me $20 bills so I end up with a lot of quarters. A lot. But worst, the machine won’t take the quarters. I found out later there is another machine that takes credit card but it wasn’t working, Wasted 2 hrs only to find a nearby store sells these sodas which are quite expensive at almost $5 for small bottle. Think I’ll stop by CVS next time and get a bigger bottle at half that price.

Other than this awful experience, it was fine for most part and they have really great pizza at the bar in the lodge. If you’re lucky to get room closer to the lifts that would be best otherwise really long walk through hallway.

We come here for ski in and ski out stay often. Today is the only day we requested late checkout due to broken elevators. To my surprise, the hotel refused. Even though there are plenty of rooms available to book tonight and long lines of frustrated people, including house keeping carts in front of the only 1 elevator in the entire hotel. Tons of people therefore rushed at 11am for checkout. In very small space of staircases, people walking with luggages, ski equipments and you can imagine how crowded it was. And totally not safe for the 6-feet rule.

This place is a joke. Masks inside are not enforced. People walk up to front desk in masks, then remove them to go into elevators. No disinfectants in dispensers.
Asked to speak to the manager on Wed evening. It’s noon on Fri, and still no call back.
Pool is closed most of the time - doesn’t open till noon on Fri and Sat, so there’s no way to enjoy the pool in the morning before doing other activities. The reservation system is a joke - you reserve a spot online but the pool attendant doesn’t have access to the list, so anyone can get in without any reservation.
Pool hours were not indicated on the website. Coming here w kids, the pool was supposed to be a highlight, but we’re not able to use it since it’s closed most of the day.
The only reason I give this place any stars is that the front desk staff are very friendly.
But the management clearly doesn’t care.

There are condos nearby which are affiliated with mountain creek, and located at bottom of mountain - off to the right if looking at mountain. I believe you can walk to a lift from there but check out the map on mountain creeks website to see for sure.
