We were originally booked into the cottage but were generously upgraded to the lodge. We had the full to ourselves and facilities were top notch. I would highly recommend this venue for relaxing couples or family holiday. The hosts (Rolf and Lizzie) were great and made us feel welcome. We managed to see eland, gemsbok, giraffe, Buck, etc

This is a great escape for a large group of friends or family. We booked the manor house and shared the weekend with our family of thirteen! The house consists of six rooms, some with en-suite bathrooms (with underfloor heating) and some sharing the bathrooms. All and all they provide good linen, enough blankets and some heaters and fans. The...

The reserve is situated a couple of kilometres outside Robertson on vast open land offering a tranquil atmosphere. It is ideal if you are looking for peace and quiet. Since we were a large group we had the lodge to ourselves – at a reduced rate (if you are 10)! The rooms offer suffice privacy since they are free standing...

A tranquil getaway for 3 couples in our family to celebrate 3 birthdays, ranging from 8 to 80. It's an easy drive from Cape Town, and the guest book shows that several octogenarians have come here to see in their ninth decades with family. One can see why. This is a wonderful stage setting to do absolutely nothing but be...

We recently celebrated my birthday at Amathunzi with 25 members in the party. We used all the accommodation available at Amathunzi and everyone was extremely comfortable. The only negative was at the Manor House where two bedrooms in a separate wing are described as being able to share a bathroom, but the bathroom is in fact on-suite, and therefore it...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
This is the real luxury of Amathunzi: with a maximum of 24 guests sharing the 3000ha reserve, Amathunzi offers the kind of privacy and peace that is increasingly difficult to find – particularly within easy reach of a city. Choose from a choice of three privately situated accommodation options: the lakeside lodge (above), which sleeps 10; the elegant Manor House, sleeping 12, and the rustic one-bedroom cottage. Click on any one of these options for more detailed descriptions and photographs. An expansive 3000ha private game reserve, Amathunzi is a treasure trove for plant lovers, comprising fynbos, renosterveld and succulent Karoo biomes. Antelope and zebra graze in the untrammeled space, while above raptors wheel and glide. The Amathunzi reserve can only be explored on foot or by bike, or we can arrange an evening game drive in the open-topped LandCruiser, and toast the setting sun from one of the reserve’s viewpoints. As is typical of Western Cape fynbos biome, Amathunzi soil is fairly nutrient-depleted, with vegetation dominated by sclerophyllous – evergreen, hard-leaved, flowering shrubs, while the dry river beds are home to acacia and sand olive trees. What makes exploring Amathunzi on foot so satisfying is the presence of the succulent Karoo biome producing blossoms so saturated in colour they glow like gem carpets, discarded in the veld. Kudu, gemsbok, black wildebeest, eland, red hartebeest, bontebok, springbok and zebra roam the reserve, often seeking the sweeter grasses and water sources located near the manor house and lodge. Seek them out at sunset in our open-topped vehicle, or on foot via our hiking trails, or cycle the network of jeep tracks that wind through the reserve (a number of mountain bikes are available). Shyer species you may encounter are the klipspringer, duiker and aardvark. Given the abundance of water on the reserve, birdwatchers are rewarded with regular sightings. Species to look out for include the Black Eagle, Lesser Double Collared and Malachite Sunbirds, Black Harrier, Spoonbills, Hamerkop and the Pale Chanting Goshawk. ... more   less
