Had planned to stay here based on earlier reviews but it really looked closed when we got there so we booked a nearby B&B to our delight. Nearby Gandy Dancer B&B was a pleasure (Great Breakfast} the only con-Ceiling fans instead of AC.

We had a lovely stay in Chama at The Hotel. We found it here on Tripadvisor. The proprietor, Barbara, is just so incredibly helpful and friendly. The rooms are clean and comfortable and about as far away from motel-modern as you can get. Yes, the rooms are very VERY old fashioned, but the bedding is modern enough for a good...

The Hotel and Shops is my favorite place to stay during my frequent trips to Chama. Roger and Barbara are very friendly, the rooms are simple but comfortable and clean and the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic railroad is right across the street. Not a 4 star hotel, but more like a home away from home.

Boy did I get lucky. I was searching the internet, trying to find a place to stay in Chama and I happened upon The Hotel. Quaint, unique, charming and friendly, it doesn't get any better than this. If you don't like friendly people, and, if you can only handle fancy, froufrou, then this is not the place for you. But...

Great family atmosphere! Warm and cozy with lots of individual attention! Great shop inside for train souvenirs and other memorabilia. Great place to stay with the perfect location, right across from the train! Would stay there again and again! Highly recommend!

My wife and I stayed here mainly to ride the train, of course. We enjoyed the coziness, quaintness and the helpfulness of the staff. It was nice to be able to open the windows and enjoy the cool mountain air (July), listen to the evening rain on the balcony, and relax in a place that had much less of the...

What do you say about a place that has problems, yet you really like it and would return to it? It has such a great "feel" to it - the proprietor gives you that "just folks" sense. O.K., it's an old hotel, with oak floors, wood paneling, older plumbing fixtures (green pedestal sink), ungrounded 2-prong electrical outlets. Rooms are small,...

I'm expressing my frustration on this review which was uncalled for. I had made a reservation and was gonna arrive late, I was instructed that a note would be on the window stating which room I'd be in and with the keys in there too. I was to ride the train with my date the next day, but to my...

If you stay at the Hotel and Shops long enough, or frequently enough, you become part of the family. The owners go out of their way to make sure that your stay is clean, affordable, and above all, happens in a friendly environment. Travelers should keep in mind that the Hotel and Shops is a historic building. So you won't...

this was my first trip to chama, to ride the train, and won't be my last. I spent two nights at THE HOTEL[sometimes referred to as the old railroad hotel] and really enjoyed it. if you want to enjoy a hotel from the '30s this is it. except for the gift shop, the entire place is like a museum. that...

“One suggestion - If you have lots of stuff, spend $10 more and get the 2-room "suite." the second room is ideal for holding your suitcases and has a small desk for laptpop use.”
