Mala Mala, is what I would call the ultimate in game lodges, we wanted for nothing and had a fantastic 10 day stay. Bringing a group of 14 persons to a lodge is always a task, but everyone from the lodge Manager, through the spectacular guides, the fabulous chef and staff made my job a breeze. During the 10 days...

Didn't really expect much from what I had heard about safaris in Kenya, etc. (Drive for hours and perhaps spot a grazing animal or two). Nothing could have prepared me for the thrill of following a pride of lions for four days. Being 10' away from magnificent leopards (and adorable cubs). Nearly extinct rhino. Elusive cheetah. Too many more to...

This was our first Safari and what a way to begin! They are not kidding when they say you can see the Big 5; we saw them every day of our 4 night trip. The ranger, Robin was fantastic. His knowledge of all the various species, from their habits to their personalities was a real education. We spent time with...

We just returned from our African adventure. We were a party of 14 celebrating my mother in laws 75th birthday. Ages ranged from 12-75. This was really one of the most incredible trips we have ever taken and we have traveled extensively and to many incredible places. It was everything we dreamt it would be and more. The rangers were...

Great guides, great game and great comfort! This was our first safari and it exceed expectations in every way. We had college aged sons with us, both of whom were in shock at the beautiful "camp" that was nicer than most hotels. We saw 4 out of the big 5 plus lot's of birds and prey. Coffee with the Giraffes...

We stayed 3 nights at MalaMala's main camp and had 6 game drives. We saw 10 different leopards as well as rhinos, lions, elephants, and lots more. We thoroughly enjoyed the camp. The food was exceptional. It was even more than we could have expected. Our ranger, Dean, was excellent at spotting game and very knowledgeable.

Just returned from a 2.5 week trip to Africa. The highlight of our four lodge stays was Malamala. The broad range of wildlife, plants and trees and the variety of terrain was noteworthy. In addition, the well-appointed lodge suites, great food and extremely knowledgable rangers added to our enjoyment of Africa. In particular, we found Grant, our ranger for three...

This place by far is on the top five places to stay in South Africa. My husband and I both joked about going home and loading up a few things and coming back to our home (room #16) because we loved this place so much! Our guide Brenden, was on top of everything. He was fantastic in not only finding...

I find it difficult to put into words the experience of Mala Mala. From the time I was 10 years old I have wanted to see the wildlife in Africa. It took 60+ years, but now that I have been here I have experienced seeing the wildlife in a way I could not have imagined. We were here for 3...

This was my second visit to MalaMala, and I hope I can visit again a few years from now. This is truly a remarkable place. The accommodations and meals are out of this world, but what sets MalaMala apart is the game viewing and the hospitality. Everyone is so friendly and helpful. You just feel very welcome and pampered from...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
MalaMala Game Reserve is the Safari Industry's blueprint to the luxury photographic safari. In existence since 1927, this massive thriving tract of land produces the most exciting wildlife experience this side of the equator. MalaMala Game Reserve is the largest private Big Five game reserve in South Africa. Comprising 13 300 ha (33 000 acres), MalaMala shares a 19 km (12 mile) unfenced border with the world-renowned Kruger National Park, and lies strategically sandwiched between the National Park and the Sabi Sand Reserve. For over four decades, Michael Rattray has remained focused on his objective to preserve and protect the land over which he is custodian. Allowing nature to move to its innate rhythm, guests experience today what the forefathers of the African Safari would have experienced at the turn of the century. This philosophy has paid off, as experienced by a veritable collection of photojournalists and film-makers who have made MalaMala their destination of choice to capture footage of wildlife viewing that would rival any Hollywood production for thrilling and breathtaking animal encounters. MalaMala's Camps (MalaMala Main Camp, Sable Camp and Rattray's on MalaMala) are the embodiment of an authentic safari experience pioneered at a time when the safari was simple - unassuming camps, vast sweeping plains, the African sky and the bush in all its splendour. Wellness was the feeling after a long day in the wild. Cigars were shared without pomp and ceremony. Guests to MalaMala will still spend hours beneath an inky sky in the traditional boma exchanging stories from the wild - a sumptuous meal, good company and relaxed faces warmed by the crackling fire, accompanied by the nocturnal symphony of sound. ... more   less
