Phinda Forest Lodge, about three hours northeast of Durban, offers superb game viewing, lovely private cottages tucked away in a sand forest, and staff that is dedicated to providing great food and friendly service. Theo, our guide on game drives, was extremely knowledgeable and thoughtful, extending our early-morning and late-afternoon drives to make sure we could see a lioness with...

We have just spent 4 nights at Phinda Forest Lodge and can truly say it was wonderful. The game reserve offers all types of environment ensuring that each drive provides a new experience. We saw so many animals and birds, all beautiful. The most memorable will be finding the 3 lionesses who impressed us with their tree climbing skills, the...

I spent 3 nights at Phinda Forest Lodge on a Photographic Safari, the Lodge is built in the Sand Forest which is spectacular and has some special birds and wildlife, the rooms are great and comfortable and each room is surrounded by Forest. The Dining area of the lodge is built on the edge of the forest and overlooks a...

A talented staff made our stay at Phinda very confortable with private air-conditioned cottages and fabulous cuisine. The Phinda wildlife experience was not quite what we expected. Having travelled to the Serengeti in Tanzania where all the animals run totally free, we had to make an adjustment to a private game reserve comprising old farms that have been fenced and...

Very comfortable attractive accomadation in separate glass walled lodges all out of sight to other lodges. First class game viewing especially the graceful elegant cheetahs. We were lucky enough to see a pack of African wild dogs who had just made a kill, this is a rarity. The staff of the reserve are all young and enthusiastic and our ranger...

We stayed at Phinda Forest lodge as part one of a safari organized by &beyond. We both adored Phinda Forest Lodge. The rooms are very unique; understated luxury in a sand forest - where you can watch the Kudu walking by from your bed. The attention from the staff was wonderful; always with a smile. Our butler, whose name I...

Wow, mostly just wow. It is a game reserve so it is pretty clear you will see most if not all of the big 5. For Americans the game reserve is large, think bigger than the entire city of San Francisco in terms of square miles. But the animals aren't fed, managed or separated. It is wild and we received...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Set deep in the heart of a rare and beautiful dry sand forest, the award-winning Forest Lodge fuses architecture and conservation. The lodge was hand built by local artisans, with a minimal footprint on the forest floor – not one tree was felled during construction. An exquisite contradiction, floor-to-ceiling glass walls invite the forest inside, while the dense tree canopy shelters and provides privacy. Floating on stilts above the forest floor while dainty suni graze below, the 16 Zulu Zen suites blend harmoniously into the dappled shade. ... more   less
