We didn't stay at Dunkeld Estate but went there for dinner; we were staying at a B&B in the town of Dullstroom. The pleasant experiences we had a few years ago at The Black Swan at this establishment made us go back there. What a disappointment. The Black Swan had been slaugtered and in its place was "1883", allegedly the...

Dunkeld Country Estates is owned and operated by Go Touch Down Tours and it is because we booked a safari tour with them that Dunkeld was on the list of accommodations. There were four of us in the party but when we arrived we were told that they were overbooked and because of this we were separated from our party...

My family of 3 stayed at one of the HC chalets on Dunkeld Estate over the Easter weekend 2017. Whoever designed the layout of the chalet has no idea of functionality. Two upstairs bedrooms adjoining a large, but badly designed bathroom with no shower is my first complaint. One must navigate the steep and creaky wooden staircase to a shower...

We stayed in one of the fisherman's cottages and we were appalled! The cottages lack of maintenance is a massive issue, taps still showing grouting, towel rails failing off the wall, a shower head which is not nearly a shower. Dirty floors, carpets and stained linen and towels. I complained but we have not had any response. We paid top...

We spent the weekend at the hotel and we were happy with everything in the room No. 11 had a lovely big bathtub and we loved the fact that it was just outside the busy little town but still felt secluded. Housekeeping was very friendly and did an excellent job as far as cleaning the room. I will not recommend...

Lack of maintenance is a big issue, Staff do not clean the units properly and nobody checks, I was literally sworn at by the Restaurant Manager at the 1863. We had to complain about the rubbish lying around on the property especially on the walking trails.

By telling guests that there is only room left and then to find that two other rooms in the unit is unoccupied is inexcusable. We settled for the 'only available room' without requesting a double bed and then found both the other rooms had double beds. The restaurant experience was nothing but poor and the blame was put on the...

Breathtaking scenery. Majestic forests. Acres of unspoilt beauty. Just do not sleep over in one of the cottages. The beds are worn out and bedsheets are old and crumpled. Our cottage was dirty with cobwebs everywhere. The towels were old and dirty with brown spots on them. The braai was broken and there wasn't a complimentary bag of wood. Didn't...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Dunkeld Country Estate is a beautiful trout-and-game resort situated on over 1000 hectares only 3.7Kms from the popular village of Dullstroom. The area, renowned for its sub-alpine climate, high altitude and fly fishing waters, is favoured by city dwellers wanting to relax in the country and enjoy fresh air and panoramic views only 2.5 Hours from Johannesburg. The Resort consists of a central Lodge which offers 13 spacious Hotel rooms dotted around a fishing dam and near the main restaurant/ reception area. Our self-catering accommodation consists of 4 private self contained family suites and an additional 20 self-contained one bedroom chalets. Most of our rooms have an open fireplace to keep warm on those cold, and most popular, misty days. The heritage of the estate has been preserved with the conversion of the old farmhouse into a restaurant, which is more than a hundred years old. Our new reception, lounge and jazz bar was opened in August 2014 and compliments our banqueting facilities which cater to weddings, functions and conferences. We have a stone chapel, tea garden and can cater to your every need. Dunkeld is well known for its forest weddings. The resort boasts many well-stocked dams filled with Brown, Rainbow and Golden Trout, offering fly-fishing enthusiasts from novice to experienced the enjoyment of quality angling time in pursuit of that perfect catch. We are also passionate about introducing children to the art of fly fishing and one of our on-site guides holds a demo and teaching session every weekend. The estate also offers a host of family and child orientated activities. Our horse out rides are very popular as is our kiddies activity program. We are introducing new and fun activities every week. The Estate is located on the famous Panorama Route which takes visitors from Dullstroom all the way through remarkable landscapes to the Blyde River Canyon, Echo Caves and Pilgrims Rest. Dunkeld is also the perfect rest stop on the way to the Kruger National Park and the private reserves located in the Timbavati and Sabi Sands Reserves. ... more   less
