The Good:
The drinks, the motel employees, the bar/restaurant attached to the motel and the Alex Bay bike rally with good bands and cheep beer

The Bad:
The River Rat Motel is several miles from town . (but you know this going in)

The Ugly:
My Husband and I always joke that the smaller motels usually make the most memorable stays with the outdated rooms. (but we always have a great time)

The Rat pushed this to the limit with the desperate need for new bedding.

For this reason I have to rate the hotel very poorly.

Let me start by saying that the motel owner is very nice. She let us check in early and was very accomodating, and put up with the hockey team's crap. However, you get what you pay for-I've stayed in many establishments, and this was pushing it to my limit. There were no curtains on the window-only a white blind, which would let in light-so I rigged a blanket up there so light wouldn't get in in the morning. The walls are super thin-you can hear your neighbors-the heater-I have no idea what it was-a radiator? A space heater in the wall? I have no clue-but it was extremely old. The bathroom was tiny-there was hardly any room at all. There was no floor mat for the shower-only a paper mat-which does nothing-so we put a towel down. We had no remote for the TV and the motel did nothing about it. Honestly, I would not stay here again-it was fine for 1 night-but I won't be back. It was clean-that was a good thing...but wayyy too bare bones for my taste.

Thank you for your review of our property. We are sorry you were disappointed with your stay here; we would like you to know we have replaced the entire side building blinds with blackout drapes and will be replacing the remainder of the blinds in the front motel where your team stayed with drapes as well. Also out of the 20 rooms, suites and apartments on the property, all but 6 beds have been replaced with new ones. We appreciate your input and will strive to do our best for our patrons.

My group stayed in several rooms for 3 nights while we dove the many wrecks in the St. Lawrence River. I was surprised how comfortable my roommate and I were there. You get a bad impression when you first enter the room due to a strange smell but after running the a/c for a while, the odor goes away. Perhaps the carpeting needs replaced or something. On the plus side, the a/c worked well for August, the TV was good, the bathroom was very clean and bright and there was a lot of hot water with good shower pressure. Not sure what the room cost since we paid a set price to our group leader but it did seem reasonable. Don't get me wrong--this is not a 5-star establishment-but for a bunch of guys (maybe not girls) on a dive vacation, it was fine. Keep in mind that we are not picky and are easily pleased.

Based on other reviews of this place I don't need to add much. Food & service in Restaurant might be even worse. Worthless dump! Even bikers that reviewed this place wrote similar reviews. Wait staff needs to go back to farming. Nuf said!

We stayed last weekend at PJs this was the second consecutive year. We were in the area for a charity golf tournament. The location was great--just 3 miles from the golf course. We had 5 rooms booked which were clean and perfectly adequate. The owners Pam and John are awesome hosts they went over and beyond to make our stay enjoyable-thank you for the fire ring and campfire wood. We did enjoy some delicious munchies and cocktails in the bar area. Thank you Shannon for introducing us to the salty chocolate pretzel shot. We will definitely return next year thanks again.

We were three couples attending a wedding. Our room reeked and the windows did'nt open so I had to run the a/c constantly. The sheets on the bed had a huge yellow stain, both top and bottom, which made me question whether they were even washed. One couple's sheets had blood on them and no toilet paper in the room.
Paper bath mats, ceiling had obviously leaked in the bathroom and they didn't bother to repair the damage, only one towel, the wi-fi was very bad in our room, none at all in the other rooms. I could write more but I'm trying to forget the experience.

We are sorry your experience at our motel as we strive for excellence at our establishment. Cleanliness is a very important thing to us here and my staff takes pride in a job well done. We maintain a log book on each room each day it is cleaned and by whom so that if an issue arises we can address it properly. Since nothing was reported to us during the stay it is difficult to ascertain details but rest assured I will look into and address the issues described and we will correct the aforementioned issues. I certainly would have corrected the problems raised if given the opportunity. Again I apologize and wish you all well. God bless. Pam

Awesome time. Love being there and the food is always amazing. Has a restaurant for dinner and everything we need for the night. In between both Alexandria bay and Clayton, so we are close to all attraction. Would highly recommend it!!

During bike weekend. #13 smelled like wet dog and musty....and our friends were in #11 which smelled like raw sewage. Complained to manager in the late afternoon and she dropped off air freshener spray. We went out for couple hours and came back to worse smells. Complained again which resulted in her screaming at me at 10:00 PM. She asked me what she could do and I asked her to comp the 2 rooms until next day since nothing could be done that evening and we would all stay our smelly dog room. She offered $20. Says she's had a bad day and night and can't "deal with it or me" and told us to leave. We left at 11pm with very little gas in tank and no gas stations open. Not cool and very unsafe.

We are sorry we were not able to satisfy you here at PJ's Motel. You were not kicked out for complaining I refunded your money because we were not able to satisfy you. As we were sold out here for bike weekend, I offered you my best room at our other motel up the road which was actually a better room, but you refused that. You insisted on me giving you the room free, which I would rather not do as you had informed me that the room was unacceptable. When you checked with the other 4 rooms which come as a wonderful group here with us every year for bike weekend, it was 3 in the afternoon. Perhaps if you had said something then instead of waiting until the middle of my dinner rush at 6:30 in the restaurant when I could not leave, I could have done something different to remedy the situation. We are a small mom and pop business here and do the best we can to accommodate our guests and make them feel at home. When guests are unreasonable in their requests the best we can do is just refund them their money and enable them to seek accommodations elsewhere. You didnt have to go home...you could have had a brand new suite just up the road at our other motel. And your friends in room 11 did not ask for a comp on their room. They asked if they could switch to your room if you didnt want it as it was bigger and it smelled fine to them.

We are sorry your stay with us wasn't satisfactory. We have a wide variety of room setups ranging from large one bedroom apts to 2 dbl beds in front w power hookups for our fishermen. Room 16 is a cozy room with a large bathroom next to the laundry, it has a desk dresser w 3 drawers and a wall clothes rack w hangers, and a large new flatscreen 32 in tv on the wall. It was totally gutted and remodeled 5 years ago when we rebuilt the entire side building after a fire. The queen pillowtop mattress is brand new but it is correct that only two pillows are on the bed. Xtras are available and i do recall you asking me for 2 more during our Friday night dinner rush in the restaurant, and when i got free, i took 2 more down along w extra towels. We supply 2 sets per room standard and our cleaning staff normally restocks towels and makes up beds every morning unless the do not disturb sign is on door. I will check our duty sheets to see who initialled the stayover that following day. Nothing was mentioned about tp when asking for pillows but we keep xtra rolls down under the sink cabinet. It was a 2 nite stay i believe. Normally the laundry is closed earlier at dinner but it was so busy that nite, we were unable to catch it empty til later. We will have maintainence tighten up the closer on the door to quiet the closing. Again i apologize and all we can do is strive to do better.

OK OK I know it was a last minute decision to book a place for the Labor day weekend and I guess the price and the fact they had vacancies should have raised question marks but what the hell - can't be that bad can it?

We 'upgraded' to a non smoking suite and upon entry there was a distinct musty smell of stale tobacco! Fortunately it remained in that room and not in the bedroom.

However the bathroom was terrible! Sagging floor near the shower, huge iron stains from the wall to the shower base!

We were particularly impressed that the dead fly on the window sill managed to survive 3 days 'cleaning'.

Fortunately we were so busy having fun that we did little more than sleep there..

The RiverRat Cafe is not included in the bad review as we ate there and were very impressed by the quality of food and servers.

The motel however is one to avioid. Old and tired and very much in need of a makeover!
