Detailed Reviews
We stayed 4 nights at Casa Jules and it was a great surprise. Valerie offered us an upgrade on the room and Bruno was always nice and helpful. The staff is always available and polite. The restaurant is superb, delicious pizzas!

We spent 5 nights here towards the end of our trip from North to South Mozambique and it was the place where everything seemed to be absolutely right. The 4 chalets and the bar area have character: comfortable and welcoming. We had chalet 4 (green) which had a double bed with nice bright linens, bedside tables, shelf unit, places to sit, and a good cube net - and still some space to move. Sabrina, the manageress, and her team work hard to ensure guests have a positive experience. Food is very good, freshly prepared and well-presented. Evening menu always has a vegetarian option, which was good news for me after a month of omelettes! The music in the bar adds to the atmosphere but never intrudes upon it. Zombie is in a lovely garden environment, just over the sand road from the beach. There are hammocks but also places to sit and relax around the pool. There's a stack of really good information available - both by word of mouth from Sabrina and the team and from the up-to-date and informative local info board. Throw in to the mix reliable wifi, hot water, book exchange, efficient and cheap laundry, and the freshest lemon you'll ever get in your Savanna cider! This was one of the few places we stayed where I felt we got very good value for money in Mozambique. I'd be really happy to return (and suspect I probably will!)

Came here three nights in a row just for cafe Jules because the food was just too good! We had the crab samosa, fish soup, tiger prawns, garlic bread and of course the pizza! Everything was just so delicious and the owners are so friendly! So even though we didn’t stay at zombie cucumber, we came every night for the food!

The Zombie Cucumber Hotel is located right on the beach. Our rooms were small huts with 12 beds with mosquito nets. The bathrooms are shared without doors. There were many mosquitoes in the room, outside there is a clothesline where you can hang your clothes. Cleanliness is normal both in the casitas and in the shared bathrooms, there was no Wi-Fi in the rooms, only in the restaurant. There was security at the door. The place is beautiful, the beach is next door, the town can be explored on foot and a few steps away there is an interesting African art gallery with beautiful carved wooden pieces. We liked it.

I had planned to stay at Zombie Cucumber, but I changed my mind. The place is a real mess. The new owners can't speak English, they are extremely unprofessional and not friendly at all. I guess that they haven't been in Africa for long and that they are just starting in the tourism business. Noise, dust, mess and ... Smoke ! Hey guys, please avoid smoking in the face of potential clients when trying to sell them your "rooms"...

We recently stayed at this back packer lodge in Vilanculos on our way to Madagascar.
I will say that the host Elizabeth was friendly, helpful and possibly one of the few things worth mentioning about Vilanculos.
The beds were not wonderful, but rooms were clean and the price was right.
They make good pizza.
A word of caution, be careful swimming at the beach, it's littered with broken glass bottle and you will likely cut your feet.

I stayed at Zombie Cucumber for a few days in mid July. Valerie and Bruno were dead helpful, and could not have been more friendly (Valerie collected us from the airport). We stayed in the huts, which worked perfectly for us...as we were out diving each day it was a short walk down to Odyssea diving club. The beach is just nearby, the food offered is excellent (and good value), the staff ready with cold beers when required. Bruno is full of stories about Africa, and is excellent company. Whilst there, he was overseeing the finish of his grand project...the creation of 8 new luxury bedrooms on the site...they should be worth a look. Look..Vilanculos is a quiet place, and it is for divers, those who want to get away and relax and so on. A treat is to get in a taxi and go to the Casa Rex for a full-on dinner, but it's a bit of a mission to go for that. Instead, we ate several times at Zombie, and found it excellent. Go there before Mozi turns into another set of towns with beach villas...the large beachside hotel in town is already undergoing refurbishment, and with the new airport, plus regular flights from Joburg etc the place will take off. But I loved the dark, dark nights, the sound and fresh smell of sea on beach and I'd definitely say Zombie is worth staying at.

I arrived at Zombie Backpackers in a bit of a bind. Earlier that day I had entered my PIN incorrectly at an ATM and because my PIN was the same for both my bank card and credit card they were both cancelled. I contacted my bank but they said that nothing could be done beyond sending me a new card. This left me stranded with no money until a replacement card would arrive and 100's of km away from the closest embassy.
The manager felt bad for my situation. My p arents ended up transferring money to the owners via PayPal after which they withdrew and provided me with the transfer amount. I tried to reimburse them for their troubles but they wouldn't accept a tip. Not many people would have gone so far out of their way to help a stranger. I was very impressed!!!
I stayed in a dorm during my stay. They have a 8 bed hut-style-dorm (beds in a circular arrangement). The sleeping area was spacious and clean. The beds had great cube style mosquito nets that were a nice change from the other dome style nets (giving the user a lot more room).
The food was great. The owner cooks a home cooked meal every night. Myself being a vegetarian I always had the vegetarian option which was very tasty. The food is priced very reasonably. It isn't dirt cheap but considering the large portion sizes and the very good quality food it is great value.
The eating area also has WIFI internet at a very affordable rate (during my stay it was 100MET/day). It was nice to be able to catch up on some work over the internet that I hadn't been able to do on other slow internet terminals in Mozambique. There is also a very clean (probably filtered daily) pool that is a nice break from the heat). The bathroom facilities are clean. The staff is very friendly and always smiling. The staff can also set you up on a number of options for snorkelling or scuba diving. The beach is only about 50 meters from the front gate.
All in all probably my favourite hostel in Africa so far. I would recommend this to anyone travelling to Vilankulos. If you stay in Vilankulos then be sure to give Zombie Cucumber a try.
