I spent a night in Hudad. From there you can have a great view, and the hiking trail from Lalibela until Hudade is also very good! There are also several things that you can see around. You can also see several species of birds and, if you are lucky, somo mammals, such as the Gelada. Really recommended! The hike can be a bit though though for those who have any impairment or are not used to hike. People in the lodge were also very nice and we had a nice talk after a good dinner together with the other guests. I went with Thomas, a very nice guide. He will spot the birds and has a very good knowledge of the terrain. His whatsapp number is + 251 92 262 8686.

The scenery is breathtaking. The 2-3h hike are definitely worth it. On the 3300m high plateau a few pretty round stone and thatch houses. A king size bed with 3 blankets, a single bed, two high tables, a mirror on the floor and 3 windows with with a beautiful view and wooden shutters. One solar lamp on the wall. No shower, no washbasin nor water. WC is in a next door hut, it is a wooden throne with a hole in the middle. Toilet paper and a sign to put the used paper in the basket. The view is beautiful from there too. Dîner: Canned spinach soupe and good spaghettis with spinach or traditional ....You have a choice of beer, tea or water. There is absolutely no running water at this camp. A fire is set up and diner takes place around it. After diner 2 Shepards come over to wash and massage your feet for 10 minutes which is a nice welcome sign. Breakfast Scrambled eggs with 1 piece of tomato, tea or coffee no milk. The staff doesn’t understand English but we had our fantastic guide Temesgen. Breakfast is served outside on a stone table with a stunning view. I recommend to contact Temesgen to be your guide. He is really great and his English is very good which is very rare in Ethiopia. lalibela.culture@gmail.com Hudad, with its very spartiate bungalows it definitely a place to see!!

My hike up to hudad via asheten maryam church took around 4 hours. I had an excellent guide, thomas, who let me walk at my own pace and gave interesting facts. At hudad we were rewarded with breathtaking 360 views and a delicious lunch - and coffee of course. The way they have used local materials up there is so impressive, it's a real paradise.

We spent two nights at the Hudad Lodge. It is a unique place - peaceful and beautiful. Rooms are in individual stone dwellings spread wide apart on a small plateau; comfortable beds with plenty of blankets, solar powered lamps and basic latrines 'en suite'. Good simple fare to eat, but they also manage to get bottles of soft drink and beer up there! Take warm clothing for the evenings. From the Hudad, we walked higher, to the Tesla Trekking Lodge (3500 m) and visited a hamlet for an authentic Ethiopian coffee ceremony. Our guide, Messay (+251 91 136 2323 - he's on WhatsApp) organised everything - from meeting at the airport, one night in Lalibela, a guide to the churches, transport part of the way up the Hudad and trekking the rest of the way. He stayed with us and took us out during our day at the lodge. He was a fount of local knowledge and sensitive to our needs (including sea level physiology suddenly exposed to 3000 m altitude!). Very highly recommended.

A great lodge for a true getaway. The scenery is simply spectacular throughout the entire property, given it sits very high on a small plateau. Baboons abound and make for quite the experience when having a morning coffee or evening tea. Hike in if you can! The altitude hike is challenging but well worth it. A quiet property with no running water or heat, some electricity provided by solar but it didn't last long. Come prepared (warm clothes, small flashlight, CAMERA!) and you'll leave very satisfied that you chose to stay here.
