The campground at Heart Lake was lovely - lots of woods and privacy, a beautiful lake, and great views following doable hikes. It's a little pricey for a campground but well worth it. You're also supporting a good cause. I would definitely stay here again.

We've returned five time so far, will be back again! We stay in the lake front lean-to's, which are great if you're up for the great outdoors (we bring a tarp to tie up in the case of inclement weather).

My favorite campground in America. Clean and spacious sites. Bathrooms are always clean. We had a group of about 40 teenage kids there on a school trip and even then the bathrooms were still clean. The staff here is incredible and they’re very knowledgeable about...More

The odor from privy, attached to sleeping quarters, is obnoxious in bunk room (s) . This was noted by each person staying in the 10 person bunk rooms. The fire in the great room stove was most welcoming on a wet and rainy night.

The Loj affords its guests convenient hiking access to many of the notable High Peaks in a very pretty rustic setting. Staff graciously accommodated my request for a bag of ice to treat a sore Achilles, and refused payment. Will be hopefully returning next year!

It is not within walking distance of Main Street. I believe its site says 8 miles from Lake Placid and it a goodly drive off the main road into the property (which of course makes it very private)

Dogs should be allowed as long as you are not staying in the lodge itself. Yet, as Ken T. suggests, i would confirm directly with ADK club which maintains the lodges.
