My recent visit to Mohonk was my first as an adult. I had vacationed at MMH with my parents as a kid. This time I came with my own daughter. Being back was an unmitigated joy. All the memories came back! The place looks very much unchanged. But the service was kind, professional and patient; the amenities, activities and cultural programming were delightful -- and the food! I have no words. Maybe.. spectacular?! My daughter and I came in search of a stimulating retreat after a hectic few weeks and our visit to Mohonk exceeded every possible expectation.

I returned to Mohonk this past weekend, after 42 years. When I was 7, in 1980, I visited this resort. One rainy morning, I hiked with my father and our friends up to the Skyview Tower. On the way back down, we stopped to rest in one of the "Summerhouse" gazebos that Mohonk has set up along the cliffs. This one is built on a rock that slopes outward toward the cliff. When I got up from the bench, I slipped under and fell 40 feet. I should have died. Instead, I spent five weeks in traction for broken bones, and then months in a body cast, as I healed from the accident. I had to learn to walk again. What changes did the ownership make to address the safety issue? None. I was shocked to return to the very same gazebo, and see it unchanged. The ownership obviously prefers to keep its trademark Summerhouses as they are -- death traps -- rather than sacrifice some aesthetic purity to prevent children from getting hurt or worse. It was difficult walking the halls of the resort and seeing portraits of the celebrated Smiley family. These are obviously uncaring people. During the entirety of my months-long recovery (I missed almost a year of school), never once did they reach out to see how I was doing or to express sympathy. I don't know whether or not other children have been hurt since then. I am sure the resort won't publicize that information. But that even one child could have a life-threatening accident, for most businesses that would be enough to make some sort of adjustment for safety. It is truly shocking that Smiley Brothers has done nothing. When you visit Mohonk, you put yourself in the hands of a reckless business, and you put your children in terrible danger.

The Mohonk Mountain House is truly an oasis! We have been wanting to visit for several years, but the price always deterred us. We finally decided to splurge for two nights this summer. Accommodations: When we arrived at the Mohonk Mountain House, we checked in at the Gatehouse. The resort is a 2.5 mile drive up a winding mountain road. If you suffer from anxiety, as I do, this drive can be a bit nerve wracking. Most of the drive is on a narrow road with a steep drop-off and no guardrail. Be sure to drive slowly and carefully, especially in inclement weather or at night. When we arrived at the resort, the front desk staff was friendly, courteous, and accommodating. We stayed in a Traditional Room on the ground floor which was cozy, comfortable, and clean. We really loved the fireplace in our room and the rocking chairs on the balcony. This added to the rustic charm of the Mohonk Mountain House. Dining: We throughly enjoyed our breakfast and lunch each day in the Main Dining Room. We also had delicious dinners in the West Dining Room and the Main Dining Room. The breakfast menu included unlimited food. The lunch and dinner menus included an appetizer, entree, and dessert for each person. We also enjoyed pre-dinner cocktails at the Carrier Lounge and on the Sunset Porch. The Sunset Porch was the perfect place to have a drink and relax while watching the sunset. Alcoholic beverages are not included in your stay and are pricy. For example, a beer was $13 and a mixed cocktail was $20. Activities: During our stay, we took full advantage of all the activities the Mohonk Mountain House had to offer. We went on three hikes: Around the Lake (short and easy), Eagle Cliff (moderate), and Sky Top Path to the Tower (moderate). The views on these hikes were absolutely stunning! If you are afraid of heights, be weary of looking down. We felt the trails were not clearly marked making it easy to get lost. We also utilized the indoor swimming pool, the bathing beach, and water activities on the lake. The Mohonk Mountain House offers a variety of water activities including paddle boats, row boats, canoes, kayaks, and paddle boards. We also had the opportunity to take the Archery class with Regina, who was an excellent instructor. We were extremely impressed how she took the time to remember everyone's name. We were very disappointed in the lawn games. The putting green was missing the starting markers and several flags. Most of the shuffleboard discs were either broken or missing. Considering the price of this resort, we were expecting the lawn games to be in pristine condition. Throughout our stay, we attempted to make inquires at the outdoor Information Booth but nobody appeared to be working there. Overall, we enjoyed our stay at the Mohonk Mountain House. Even though it is expensive, it is definitely worth the value considering all the amenities. We hope to visit again in the future!

It should be obvious we love this place. It is our 4th time in 12 months. We enjoy going in the beginning of the summer, in the fall when the leaves turn colors and again in February to enjoy the winter sports. This visit, we rented the new e-bikes and thoroughly enjoyed a very long ride along some beautiful trails, including many uphill trails that we would never be able to navigate with a regular bike. It was our first experience with an e-bike and We will likely purchase one shortly. After hiking and biking, we like to relax on the incredibly serene and beautiful lake in a kayak. They have a large friendly staff to assist you with the various boating options. If we have any time remaining before dinner, we will either shoot hoops or play a little shuffleboard. As in every prior visit, I found the food to be excellent. My wife and daughter must eat gluten-free and the menus are almost completely gluten free. I get to eat the entire fresh, warm loaf of bread they give you at dinner. The steak and halibut were fantastic. The lobster omelette for breakfast is my favorite. For lunch, we usually opt for the granary. The dining room might be a better option for lunch, but the granary offers excellent variety of salads, burgers, ribs, chicken, steak etc. This is obviously not a cheap place to visit. But when you factor in what it must cost to run this place with the grounds, well maintained trails, the lake, the large number of activities and the incredible food, I find it to be a worthwhile expense. We also enjoyed the evening entertainet. I would like to thank the relatively new manager, Leesa. She was very friendly, helpful and will be a great asset to the resort.

My husband and I haven't been on an overnight in 4 years. I decided to surprise him for our anniversary and take him away from his hectic work schedule. We both totally enjoyed the staff, the accommodations and the rocking chairs on our balcony looking over the tranquil lake. Hiking the many trails was totally necessary after feasting on the excellent food.

While in New Paltz we decided to take advantage of the dining day pass to determine whether we would consider an overnight stay on a future visit. We were generally pleased! Lunch at the Granary was nice. Lots of options. Perfectly laid back for our group and everyone, including our three year old, enjoyed their meal. Our hike around the lake was fantastic and found the trails to be very well kept. We could not say enough good things about the trails. The playground, however, was disappointing. There weren’t many options for the children: one small climber with a slide, a few swings, a broken teeter totter, one spinner seat, and very limited seating for parents/caregivers. The area was blacktop, not mulched. Multiple families with children of different age groups were using the playground during our very short time there, so it is certainly used. While it might seem trivial, as a family with smaller children, we found this really disappointing at a family friendly resort of this caliber. It would have been nice to have a larger playground with better kept equipment. Maybe different play-set climbers for different age groups. Mulch to soften falls for little ones. For this reason we likely won’t consider overnight stays until our children are several years older. It was really wonderful having the day pass option to visit for the day and would consider doing so in the future.

Mohonk is unique in many ways - a great blend of elegance, wonderful meals, and a focus on outdoor activities. We have been there many times and have always found the staff to be warm and welcoming. The facilities are always clean and well maintained. Trails, pool, lake and spa are always in great shape. The family-owned atmosphere makes this place feel like home. While the rooms are great, you will want to spend lots of time outdoors - hiking, boating, swimming, or ice-skating in the winter. Some of the rooms are a bit small, but if you call the resort to make your reservations, the staff will spend time with you to assure that you have a room that works for you. We recommend the higher floors - wonderful views of the Catskills or lake from your balcony. wonderful public areas to sit and read or just relax. If you stay here, seek out Jim Clark, the Barn Curator. He is a wealth of knowledge on the history of the property and the Smiley family. Time spent with Jim increases the feeling that you are part of the Mohonk community. We highly recommend Mohonk!

Every employee starting from someone at the gatehouse to the restaurant to the person who gives the boats is rude and unwelcoming. They make you feel like you are entering a jail of maximum security and are not welcome here. All the employees act like they hate everybody. Stayed there many times and the staff is meaner each time. I won’t be back. Rooms are small and rotten you can hear everyone outside your room.

We went to Mohonk for first time to celebrate our anniversary and really enjoyed our time. The property is beautiful with many trails for all levels of hiking. There were many activities to do and definitely want to go back and do the ones we missed as we were only there for one night. It is great that you can spend the full day of when you check in and check out. The food was very good with varied selections. We happened to meet three members of the Smiley family and they were very nice and told us a bit about the history of the family. The staff is exceptional!! True customer service, they go above and beyond with every interaction they have with guests. They are certainly top level for customer service. Looking forward to returning!
