Value
Rates from USD 795 per person per night. An exquisite piece of Indian Ocean paradise, Benguerra Island is a luxury beach holiday destination where time stands still. Situated off the coast of Mozambique within the protected marine reserve of the Bazaruto Archipelago National Park, this island hideaway is set on a protected lagoon. Warm waters, pristine coral reefs teeming with marine life, idyllic beaches, inland freshwater lakes and towering sand dunes have shaped this adventure haven. The lodge lies sheltered within the canopy of an indigenous forest and swaying palm trees. The welcoming guest areas offer views of the lush tropical garden and the ocean beyond. Under the shade of straw covered wooden awnings, inviting comfortable loungers are set up around the lodge’s rim flow swimming pool. A colourfully decorated traditional wooden dhow has been converted into a picturesque beach bar, while the cool surrounds of the massage sala hold the promise of deep relaxation. The lodge has a range of luxurious thatched accommodation. For families or small groups, the exclusive-use Casa Familia is an ideal option with three ensuite bedrooms, a large deck area and private pool overlooking the beach. Set amidst lush island forest, there are two cosy cabanas, ideal for couples or honeymooners, and the slightly larger 10 casinhas. Cabanas and casinhas all offer private timber decks, rim-flow pools, sun loungers and private salas with irresistible hanging daybeds.

My wife and I booked the final stay of our honeymoon at AndBeyond Benguerra. From the moment we arrived we were disappointed with our experience. The manager "warned" us that the weather was going to be miserable all week, even though it turned out to be 80 and sunny for our entire stay on the island. The manager also spoiled a surprise boat ride I had booked for my wife and myself. Despite the start to the stay we were willing to look past these incidents, but more issues arose as the day went on. The huts are not secure to the outside so we had multiple lizards inside of our room, specifically in the bathroom stall, around our laundry, toothbrushes etc.. After multiple attempts to reach the manager she came to our room and said there was nothing they could do about the lizards in the room, but they're good to have because they eat the bugs. Meanwhile, the room was filled with other bugs and the mosquito net was filthy. The manager then suggested on her own accord that we might be happier moving to a different resort. We woke up the next morning without knowing that the manager had called the resort next door, Azura, and we decided to walk over there to check out the property. We were greeted by their manager and the tone was completely different. He informed us that our agent and andBeyond had already arranged for us to move and transfer our existing reservation with no additional cost. We then went back to andBeyond to pack up our things. The same manager and other staff came up to us to say they were glad to hear the move was arranged and that Azura would pick us up in an hour. Shortly thereafter our agent called to inform us that andBeyond would be charging us for the five nights originally booked i.e. a full cancellation fee. We were shocked by this given andBeyond arranged the move. At this point, we were disheartened and began looking at flights back to the US. We decided to sit down with a different manager to see if we could resolve our issue with someone new. She completely understood that we could not pay for two resorts. Within 30 minutes she had contacted andBeyond management, gotten us a documented letter acknowledging andBeyond would waive the cancellation fee, and organized our transport to Azura. We were very impressed and grateful to the other manager who sorted out the issue, but it was shocking that andBeyond would try to charge a full cancellation fee after suggesting we move.

Property's Favourite Review
Heaven. On. Earth! From the second we arrived to the moment we left, our experience was unbelievable. The welcome was memorable, check in was seamless and the cabanas are just breathtaking. The facilities, the little touches and the amenities make for an very comfortable stay and the views, privacy and the access to the beach just make you feel like the only people on the island! The turn down service is like nothing we have experienced before and lots of though goes into this. Our butler Jose was fantastic. Nothing was too much trouble and he was always going above and beyond to ensure we were well looked after. He learnt very quickly our orders and what we like to the point we didn’t need to ask for anything! The activities the island offers are brilliant and very well organised. Highly recommend snorkelling, the castaway picnic and the horse riding, all very memorable and special. The food is fantastic and lots of options for drinks. We really love how passionate all the staff are. They all seem incredibly happy and proud to work there and it’s clear AndBeyond do an awful lot for the local community and environment also. We would highly recommend/scream from the rooftops about this place and hope to be fortunate to be able to return again.

We were very disappointed with our stay at &Beyond Benguerra. We arrived to our room and found multiple openings to the outdoors intentionally built into the windows and ceiling. Because of this, there were constantly insects and other living things in our room despite our best efforts to keep them out. Over the course of our stay we found a mouse, several cockroaches, centipedes, spiders and more in our room. Several salamanders seemed to live in the room and we would see them on the walls without fail each time we returned to the room. There were also bats flying around outside, but they never entered the room. My wife and I are both leaving with tons of bug bites and a rash. For a place advertised as a luxury lodge, it was unacceptable to us to have so many issues with insects and animals in our room. Even if the above hadn’t been an issue, there were still several significant shortcomings at the lodge. The wifi was weak when it worked and would cut out completely all the time, there were no tvs in the rooms, no gym at the lodge, a tiny bathroom and no indoor shower. The outdoor shower was in the direct sunlight most of the day making it very difficult for someone with fair skin to shower when it was light out. I will say that the staff was very nice and went above and beyond to make our stay more comfortable. They were there to help with our every need and truly cared about us having a good time. The snorkeling and castaway picnic were also great experiences. At the end of the day, we paid $1,600 a night to stay at the lodge and really had trouble justifying how expensive it was. As a baseline, we would never expect bugs or animals in our room when traveling. Adding the other issues on top of that just made us feel like we didn’t get any value for what we paid. There are tons of other remote beaches around the world that are significantly less expensive and offer a better overall experience. Even if you are ok with insects and animals all over your room, you can find a better luxury experience other places for significantly less money.

Hi Dberk93, Thank you for taking the time to post your review, we are sorry that your stay at &Beyond Benguerra Island Lodge did not live up to your expectations. Being out in nature amongst the lush Island Forest and the beach there are times when little critters manage to find their way indoors. That said however, our teams do everything possible to keep them outdoors – again, we are sorry that you experienced some of these little creatures; nature certainly has its own agenda. Thank you for your praise for our teams whom I am aware did everything possible to make you feel comfortable and please be assured that we are in direct consultation with your Travel Agent who, I have no doubt, will be in touch with you directly. Kind regards Niall Anderson

We had a perfect stay with andBeyond at Benguerra Island. Literally everything is just perfect: the room, the decor, the staff, the food, the drinks, the activities, the transfer! We stayed for four nights to cap off a 2.5 week trip around southern Africa and only wished we could have stayed longer. Shout-out in particular to Isaac, Renoir, Sergio and Sarah for making our stay extra special and so so enjoyable!!!

We worked with &Beyond (Jacqui) to book our honeymoon. We started out thinking we would do Kenya + a nearby beach location but after talking about our priorities and budget, Jacqui recommended South Africa (Phinda Vlei - reviewed separately) and &Beyond Benguerra Island. The itinerary was perfect, all of our travel was so seamless, and we wouldn’t have changed a thing. We stayed six nights at Benguerra Island which was the perfect amount of time. There is plenty to do - we left our agenda up to our activities manager, Lorenzo, and were able to do all of the included activities (snorkeling, sunset dhow cruise, private island lunch, horseback riding, paddleboards). We still had plenty of time to enjoy our private suite which had a pool, day bed, and beach chairs. The suite itself was also very nice and comfortable. Paulo, our butler, was a highlight of our stay for us. He truly has a passion for hospitality and you can’t help but smile when he’s around! The food was also amazing - meals are either in the garden or at the dhow bar, and dinner is set up right on the beach. The island is so beautiful and the staff are incredible. Cannot recommend enough! (We went in July 2022 and the weather was perfect. Maybe a *little* chilly at night but they had blankets at the tables)

I celebrated my birthday here with my girlfriend - the property and staff made it really special. We went scuba diving every day (thanks Lorenzo for this and the birthday guitar playing!). Abel, our butler, made sure we had everything we needed. The dhow bar was really fun and created a fun, social environment - we made several friends. If it wasn't so far from NYC we would go every year. Thank you!

Never have I ever experienced such hospitality. From the moment you arrive, the staff anticipate your every need. The Island is beyond amazing. The trips and especially the horse riding in the ocean was a wonderful and first time experience for me. We had a wonderful time. Will most certainly go back. This lodge is just something else.. Even though we had been to this island before, this specific organisation and its staff really is above and beyond anything we have ever experienced. Management: Zané and Lorenzo were there all the time without you noticing or realising it. They anticipate your every need and wish and nothing is too much to ask from them. Our butlers: Sergio and Paolo were phenomenal - always friendly, happy and around to serve you endless flows of food and drink. Both have a great sense of humour and we laughed at their little jokes all the time. Mike, the chef, is an absolute master. Fresh fish from the ocean is on every day's menu and just when you think it can't get any better, it does. Zef and the guys at the bar make fantastic cocktails and are always ready with a drink and a smile. Mario and the catamaran team were also awesome - from fishing to snorkeling and picnic on a deserted island, they were lovely. The setting is beautiful. We had dinner on the beach every night and could not believe that every sunset was just perfect. The casinhas are well equipped with gorgeous outside showers and little details like a blue tooth speaker. Each private pool has a sea view and you have a choice of a sun lounger next to the pool, in the shade or on the beach. We were trying to find some constructive feedback to give before we left and we just could not think of a single thing - this lodge and its staff are out of this world! Go as soon as you can!

Captivating beauty. Pure bliss. Spent 7 nights here in Nov 2021 – best decision my husband and I have ever made! A spontaneous splurge holiday over our first wedding anniversary. &Beyond is sheer class and delivers an exceptional experience every time. But this place is on another level. A magic little island paradise that awakens your soul in a special way. Magnificent untouched beauty, with vistas you can't believe are real each morning. A calm bay of clear blue sea and private beach of fine white sand, with Bazaruto Island in the distance. The peace and serenity is powerful. The natural world at its best. SERVICE The world class service is what truly sets &Beyond apart. It is the secret essence which creates such a magic guest experience. Our butler Paulo was an absolute delight. The warmest, most lovable man with a smile so authentic, I feel joy simply imagining it. Astute, sharp and highly attuned to our every detail. We adored him. We still laugh about how he appeared as if from nowhere, at the slightest whisper of our presence at the main lodge. It was hilarious. We would arrive at the Dowh bar off the beach, for sunset drinks. A simple hello to greet the bar staff, and boom - Paulo’s little head would pop out from behind a tree trunk in the distant lodge. Like clockwork. He seemed to sense us in any vicinity. Ever on hand, but barely there. A master of the subtle art of non-intrusive service. To be that available to guests, whilst at the same time seemingly invisible is a gift. So genuine, professional and committed to serving our every need. Nothing was too much. At one point we called about stand-up paddleboards for an afternoon SUP. Before we could wipe the sh*t out of our eyes, there came Paulo. Paddling towards us on the water in full uniform, with a beaming grin of sheer delight. This image is etched in our minds, a truly unforgettable moment. All the staff are friendly and professional. Isaac’s warmth and confident leadership is magnetic. Johan organized urgent medication for me and couriered a cell phone we forgot in our safe back to us in South Africa within days. Josefa and Lorenzo were fantastic in guiding our activities schedule, and arranging the perfect days/times to optimise our experience in each adventure. SNORKELLING The two mile reef is astonishing. A rainbow of sprawling coral, teaming with marine life. Hundreds of starfish! Turtles and stingrays. Giant lobsters hiding in coral caves. Jamie and the amazing Catamaran team look after you 100% and give you the snorkelling trip of a lifetime. They took us to see their resident dugong in the nearby channel – an incredibly rare and beautiful creature. A critically endangered species proudly protected by this nature reserve, which is home to the last viable dugong population on the East coast of Africa. We anchored nearby on Bazaruto island and climbed a magnificent sand dune with panoramic views from the top. As if this morning wasn’t already a dream, dolphins swam alongside our boat as we cruised the final stretch home towards brunch. An other-worldly experience, really. ACCOMMODATION Our Cashina was pure luxury - the absolute best of everything. Attention to every single detail. 2 deck loungers by the rim pool, another 2 right on the beach in front. A shaded swinging outdoor beach bed in between. Coastal forests surround you, with tiny little Suni (resident antelope) visiting every day. The mopane tree draping our pool was alive with sunbirds, bee eaters and a resident paradise flycatcher. There’s a covered poolside lounge / dining area with couches on the deck. Total privacy, with neighbouring lodges out of earshot and sight. A stunning outside shower, bath with a view, heavenly 100% mosquito proofed four-poster bed. Drinks cabinet, minibar. Sarongs, all kinds of luxury towels. Outstanding mosquito protection – citronella oils, creams and sprays provided everywhere. Power fan and air-conditioner. You feel me. A sanctuary. DINING & BAR The main lodge and dining area is gorgeous. Tall, majestic Sycamore Fig trees tower over a coastal garden. The dining tables are widely spaced with lovely privacy. Several are right on the beach too, next to the legendary Dowh Beach Bar. The heart and soul of this paradise. An authentic landmark that breathes life into everything. Marcelo, Zefa and the bar team are unbeatable and make every experience there distinct and special. The food was utterly outstanding, 100% of the time. The culinary experience simply cannot be articulated. My crayfish and queen prawn photos speak for themselves. The sorbet desserts in particular are exceptional. But basically, 7 unique options to choose a 3 course meal from. Every meal for 7 days. With no two remotely similar dishes – how is this even possible?! Not to mention a trio of hot canapes with every evening drink. Unlimited raw coconut slices, biltong and dried mango snacks. Prepare for sheer indulgence and ENJOY it. My passion for &BeyondBenguerra is no doubt crystal clear, after this overly descriptive account of every detail. Sorry! But hopefully our special experience inspires many people and couples to make that final call. And commit to this luxurious, self-indulgent, relaxing and healing holiday. We are already saving up for a return trip next year. Such is its magic. DO IT.

We stayed here for five nights rest and recuperation after our safari in Botswana. We were probably the oldest people there as we were celebrating our 46th wedding anniversary rather than our honeymoon! Magical is putting it mildly, the location, the amenities, the staff ... And as for the food, well Vic excelled himself with a special anniversary dinner for us that we will never forget. So many wonderful memories, especially the "castaway picnic" where we were the only people on an endless beach (apart from our own Man Friday). I loved the beach, bush and ocean riding and my husband loved the snorkelling. Our Cashina was luxurious and the views were to die for. A piece of paradise.
