As the title says, good value. It's in the heart of stone town in a old Indian merchant house. The room is very romantic although pack mosquito repellent. The staff are helpful and we got the feeling they cared about our stay. They delivered on what was promised. The breakfast was enjoyable. Heads up, there will probably not be any...

For starters, the saving grace of this place is the existence of an elevator. If you're in the elderly age bracket, or if the knees won't hold out, or plain drunk or lazy, it's easier to get up to the 4th floor here than other equally tall and older buildings. Pretty much everything after that is a downside with this...

We were a little put off by the overall review of this restaurant but as the top two were fully booked, we opted to have a late lunch and try it out anyway. You can arrive the rooftop restaurant either by lift or several flights of steep stairs. At the top, you obtain a view of rusty iron rooftops of...

A good hotel with nice people working there. Good service. Nice food and drinks on the wonderful rooftop. Nice clean rooms. Very good! Not the cheapest hotel but not expensive either. Solid! I would go again.

The Swahili House is an oasis located in the heart of crowded, bustling Stone Town. The rooms are comfortable, and there is a restaurant and small soaking pool on the roof that offer amazing views of the city. Many mosques neighbor the hotel so the Call to Prayer is a frequent concert. The manager, Benita, is charming, and the staff...

Great hotel, beautiful architecture, friendly staff, relaxing breakfasts and evening drinks on the roof top and really central. Everything was just as expected. We can highly recommend staying here...

Food was served moderately warm, not hot and was quite expensive. Portions were small. We were expecting generous servings but was given two chicken skewers with rice and several pieces of calamari with a handful of fries. Swahili house is the place to go when Emerson, or tea house is full. Staff are friendly but could not give a confirmed...

Being in the heart of Stone Town, with a tea house on top of Swahili House for surveying the place before you set out on an adventure is really convenient and lovely. The reception was always really helpful (with organising taxis and the like), and the food was delicious (although service, like most places in the area, very slow). The...

Stone Town was a very interesting place to visit. The Swahili House was part of an OAT excursion after Safari. The place in itself was originally housing for an entire family. The top floor was for the eldest members, second floor for next down in age and first floor for the youngest. It is now separate hotel rooms, very small...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Located in the bustling heart of Stone Town the building was originally set up and used as an Indian Merchant House in the 19th century. In the 125 years that were to come the building was home to one of the many Sultan families and then became a hotel some years ago. After purchasing the hotel, renovations started in May 2008. Most of the hotel has been restored into its original state, but we have been making some changes as well. The result is The Swahili House - a sparkling hotel with traditional influences and modern day facilities in combination with authentic Swahili hospitality. ... more   less
