Nestled in a prime location near West Point, The Thayer Hotel captivates guests with its historic charm and scenic Hudson River views. While the inviting lobby fireplace and well-appointed rooms receive accolades, some travelers find the hotel overpriced, noting outdated facilities and additional fees for basic amenities.

Hotel's Favourite
We were exceptionally pleased with our stay at the Thayer hotel.
It is a vintage hotel that has been well maintained and was updated within the past 10 years, keeping with the vintage style. It is a beautiful, comfortable, and majestic building. You feel special being here.
Shannon, a manager at the desk was kind enough to upgrade us to a beautiful suite in recognition of my 60th birthday which was very much appreciated. Also wanted to provide a shout out to the friendly desk staff including Renee (who gave us some complimentary water bottles), and breakfast waitstaff Seth and Debby who anticipated our needs.
Pros:
- The bed was so comfortable "like a cloud" - didn't want to get out of it each morning.
- Great hot water and water pressure.
- Maid service was amazing, they were in and out quickly as we ate breakfast,
cleaned and restocked everything very well.
- Rooms had individual thermostats which kept the room consistently comfortable.
- Breakfast was wonderful - whether you ordered off of the menu or chose the buffet, there were plenty of great choices. Filling and delicious.
- The hotel is beautifully decorated with fresh flowers and recognition of the many military men and women that have served our country honorably.
- Keurig coffee service in every room, replenished daily.
(If you are in a suite, a small refrigerator is present, if not, it is available upon request for a charge).
- Free parking! :)
- Very much appreciate the kind and friendly staff who were very accommodating to all of our requests.
Cons:
- No room service was available during our stay, not sure why?
- It is a steep climb from the parking lot up to the hotel, but using valet service can prevent this issue.
- Although we loved facing the Hudson river, there is a train that runs just outside - the train horn can be disruptive for those of you that are sensitive to this.
- When entering the hotel by car you have to pass a guard booth and show ID as you are also pre-entering the West Point military base. The guards can be a bit brusque.
Overall, I would highly recommend staying at the Thayer hotel. It is great central location for exploring the many quaint towns of the Hudson Valley and less than 60 miles for New York City.

We have stayed at the Historic Thayer Hotel numerous times as both a couple and family in the past 4 years. The hotel is, as it’s name states, quite historic and a great place to see and the grounds are beautiful with amazing views of the Hudson River. However, this 4 night visit was quite disappointing. Our room (an executive suite) was not well cleaned prior to our arrival with a large brown sticky spill across the top of the A/C, brown drip marks down the white bathroom door, black hair throughout the tub/shower and long brown sticky mark in carpet. On the second day the bedroom TV suddenly stopped working and I alerted the front desk but 30 hours later it was still not fixed and no one had followed up with us. We ended up fishing the receiver out from behind the TV and rebooting it which solved the problem but when I told the front desk that no one had followed up they said “oh, sorry about that” and when I mentioned the room wasn’t cleaned well “ oh, sorry about that.” Due to Covid there was no housekeeping service. We did receive extra towels when needed, but we ate from the hotel restaurant in the room and put our tray outside the door and despite phone calls to the front desk it took 2 days to get picked up, and there were glasses on the hallway floor when we checked in that were not picked up until we checked out. The hotel staff was all friendly with the exception that the front desk staff was dismissive. This is too expensive of a hotel for the experience and we will find other accommodations for future visits to the area.

Thank you for taking the time to share your review. Please accept my sincerest apologies for the lack of service and hospitality, as you know from your previous stays, what you experienced is not our standard. We pride ourselves in providing excellent service, even during the pandemic, and while our amenities are tailored, our customer service and hospitality are expected to be at their usual excellent standards. I have taken your review and shared it with the Director of Front Office, Engineering team, and our Security team (that is responsible for removing dirty dishes and trash), we are committed to providing all of our guests an excellent experience and take your feedback seriously to incorporate in our training. I hope that you will consider trying us again in the future, to experience the service and hospitality that we are known for.

Please see my comments in the body of this message. I reported that my room air conditioning system was not working on two occasions and it was not repaired. The temperature on the wall and on the unit remained the same and could not be changed. With a buffet service in MacArthur's I found that the tip expectation was 20% I paid $45 for water and a drink! Is this going to the entire staff.

My experience with the Thayer hotel was terrible. After contacting the front desk about suspected bedbugs in my room I was offered a new room or an opportunity to leave the hotel for a full refund. I was traveling alone and it was after 9pm. I chose to leave the hotel and stay at another establishment. The hotel staff was sympathetic but did not assist me in relocating nor did the offer the pay any difference in rates. I ended up driving 40 minutes away to stay at a Hampton Inn that was similarly priced. I wanted to be close to West Point due to my son’s surgery in the morning. Needless to say the room condition and treatment I received is not what I expected and I will never stay there again!

I am very sorry that you were displeased with our team's efforts to accommodate your request to change rooms, and then the request for us to assist you with finding another room offsite. We are pleased to have a team of professional hotel members who are trained in identifying potential bed bugs, and the protocol that we follow when there is a suspicion of bed bugs in a room. Once you brought to our attention a concern about this, our team inspected the room, did not see any evidence of bed bugs, and offered to move you to another room for your comfort and peace of mind. You also did not like that room, and raised the same concern. Our team also inspected that room and found that there was no evidence of bed bugs. We were happy to honor your request to have your room reservation cancelled with no penalty so that you could find alternate accommodations that you would be comfortable with. Thank you for noting that our team was sympathetic to your concerns, and cancelled your reservation without penalty. Even though our professionally trained staff knew that there were no bed bugs in either room, we went through our normal protocol whenever a bed bug concern is identified by our staff or by a guest, to have the rooms tested by an expert outside company and put the rooms nearby out of service for treatment if needed. Neither of the rooms had bed bugs, and we shared that report with you once the testing was completed. In the meantime, that night, our professional and friendly staff called and talked to three hotels, tried to negotiate with them the lowest rates possible for you, and provided you with that information. Having offered you three options, you chose the one that was best for you at the price point you wanted - there were hotel options with availability 2 minutes away at the Five Star Inn as well as 15 minutes away at the Hampton Inn. I am proud of our team for professionally handling your concerns, following our protocols, and going out of their way to provide you with other lodging options. When our team needs to make accommodations for problems with a room, or poor service, we absolutely will provide the proper service recovery to make things right for our guests and clients. In this case, the inaccurate accusation you made on this platform about there being bed bugs, and to our hotel staff the night of your stay, was met with kindness and understanding, trying to find you an alternate hotel that you would be comfortable with: however, it is not a hospitality practice to pay for a guest, who cancels on the night of arrival without cause, to stay at alternate hotel. We are delighted to provide excellent service and glowing accommodations here in the Hudson Valley and would love for guests to experience for themselves the service excellence that we are known for. I am sorry that our room did not meet your expectations, and that you were not pleased with the options available to you when you chose to cancel your reservation and stay somewhere else. We hope that you will give us another try when you are visiting the Hudson Valley.

We visited the Thayer Hotel outside West Point for an evening before a wedding weekend. The facility is historic, and each room memorializes a service member and USMA graduate. We honor their sacrifice and remain grateful for their service.
While the room was comfortable with scenic views of the Hudson (on the east side of the hotel), the food service was disappointing, with offerings more like a sports bar than a restaurant at a facility commanding fairly high room rates. We understood that the pandemic had curtailed much of the anticipated dining experience.
More disappointing was the closure of West Point itself, as well as the museum. Like much of New York, the onerous lockdowns seem to be never-ending. We did have a chance to check out the Visitor's Center and gift shop, where an explanation of the life of a cadet had a remarkable exhibit.
While it's unlikely that we will return to the area, we are grateful for the opportunity to see what we did. The surrounding area is filled with scenic drives and small towns, and well worth the visit.

We arrived a bit before check-in and after a short wait we were given our room. The room was spacious, clean, and the starched linens were wonderful. That's the Good. The Bad wasn't really the fault of the Thayer. Our sleep was interrupted the first night by a fire alarm and evacuation of the entire hotel. While there was no fire, it was disturbing for all. The next night's sleep was interrupted by a group of people who decided to party from room to room and across the hall from each other. After listening to a woman cackle at every comment and others shouting their opinions, the front desk was contacted and the cackling quickly ceased. Security's actions were appreciated.
The Thayer is a lovely place oozing history and centuries of decorum. The staff was gracious, friendly, and accommodating. The rooms are well appointed and comfortable. At the price paid, fresh linens should be reinstated and amenities should be refilled daily.
No mention or apology of the fire or noise complaints were noted by the front desk upon checkout which would have been appreciated.

Very overpriced with no services including food, housekeeping, and a bar Sunday thru Wednesday. The dinning room is not what the advertising shows and the food is average. MacArthur Dinning Room has become a large cold room with a very loud wedding in the attached open room. Obviously this is how they make their money. Service wasn't a big deal nor was the setting of the table. One would expect more for $144 dinner bill for two persons.
Very disappointed with comments by the employees I tried to discuss my concerns with and they too seem unhappy. Coffee (only) was offered on the weekend but that too disappeared on Monday morning. The hotel had the audacity to charge for packaged coffee cake and cereal (very small) that looks like it comes rom Costco.'
I made a complaint to the desk regarding the pricing of $300 for a room (Saturday) with no services available and the clerk offered to "see what she could do." Obviously, nothing. Won't be returning and will not recommend this hotel to anyone.
I found that the hotel reeked of disrespect considering the hero's that are exhibited upon the hallway and room walls. They deserve more than this. West Point deserves more than they now offer. Sign of poor management and ownership.

The hotel is very nice. But there was no food offered in the hotel unless you were there there Thursday to Saturday. We were told this in advance but the hotel gave us a list of restaurants within walking distance and other restaurants within a half hour radius so we were fine with that. When we got there we realized the local restaurants were not what we expected at all. They were underwhelming to say the least. We did drive a half hour to a restaurant for dinner on the other side of the Hudson and was pleased with that. The second night we ordered pizza from a local restaurant and waited two hours for the pizza after being told it would be an hour. The Bistro at the hotel is open in the AM but not being coffee or pastry eaters it did not appeal to us at all.

The Hotel is beautiful. We were in the Army Baseball Team 3 room Suite and the walls are filled with historical photos, newspaper clippings, signed balls and very interesting books about the history of the West Point teams. It just about stops there. No housekeeping, which is fine if the staff leaves a sufficient amount of TP, tissues, and towels for the length of your stay. The 2 tiny pails (1 in the bathroom; 1 in the living room) will not hold enough trash and empty water bottles for even 1 night. No valet and no ride up from the parking lot which is across the 2 lane road and at least 4 levels of 60 stairs. No room service. The tavern & restaurant are open for very limited hours in the evening. A buffet breakfast in the morning. No smart TVs, so it’s whatever is in the few DirectTV channels offered. The per night cost is up there ($400 per night) for this room on this off season. It should be lowered to reflect what guests are NOT getting.

Dear Diana, we are so sorry to hear that you did not enjoy your experience. Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. I am sorry that our current COVID-19 protocols negatively impacted your stay: we are eager to return to daily having housekeepers tidy occupied rooms, being able to enter rooms for room service, and sharing tight air and personal space that guests occupied as we valet their cars. In the meantime, we would like to remind other travelers to review our COVID-19 protocols that are on our welcome letter on our website, or to call in for details. As our Front Desk shares with every guest during check-in, please give us a call at the Front Desk if you need additional items during your stay (like extra toilet paper), would like to swap out linen, or have fresh towels brought to your room, or for us to remove trash, we will be happy to brting clean linen and supplies bagged to your door, and can bring bags for you to hand us trash or other dirtied linens for us to take away. While there is a walk to the on-stie parking lot with a hill, most guest vehicle parking spaces this time of year can be reached in about 200 meters or less. We do provide actaul ADA information on steps and stairs that are accurate, as well as ADA parking directly near our entrance door. We do apprecaiate you sharing the feedback that you would have liked more toilet paper in your guest room, and we will share that with our Housekeeping Manager to ensure to look at the guest room count and length of stay to add additional. We are also looking forward to being able to produce capital expenditures to upgrade our televisions once our business has economically recovered from the havoc COVID reigned on the hospitality industry world-wide. For future guests, please feel free to call the hotel or read our website to understand what amenities are being offered - and we would share that as a pro-tip for anyone traveling in the North East as amenities and services have been tailored since the start of the the pandemic and ever changing recommendations from Health Authorities. Diane, we hope that you will give us another chance once the panedmic restrictions and COVID-19 guidelines have lifted, so that you can experience the full experience of our beautiful historic hotel and amenities.

This was intended as a two night retreat for my son, his fiancé and myself in two pleasant rooms overlooking the Hudson River. The hotel is obviously well maintained and full of historical significance. Many of the rooms are dedicated to various historical military figures and there are interesting related photographic displays. A very pleasant setting in a quaint local area.
Emphasis is obviously on accommodations. with a couple of hotel restaurants and rooms available for special events. A party with music was scheduled outside and below our windows for the first night of our stay Happily the policy of quiet time after 10:00 PM was adhered to.
The hotel focus is obviously on West Point related visitors and events but it could be a bit more aware of hotel services and amenities. Simple things like Ice and Vending were a bit tricky to locate. A handout is provided with about a dozen local eateries listed but other than whether they deliver, there were no helpful descriptions on the type of food. Overall a pleasant stay with a little room for providing more guest-related information.
Emphasis is obviously on accommodations. with a couple of hotel restaurants and rooms available for special events. A party with music was scheduled outside and below our windows for the first night of our stay Happily the policy of quiet time after 10:00 PM was adhered to.

i do not know. call them
I would recommend calling the hotel to make sure a car is waiting at the station. During peak times there should be taxis available
