I usually like to give second chances and am glad I did. This was my second time staying at Catskill Lodge and was glad I stayed during this trip. The managers were new in July when I went initially and now are seasoned when I returned. The house is homey, comfortable, and clean. Breakfast was good and plentiful.

I was on the second floor and had my choice of using two bathrooms. One had a bathtub/shower, the other had just the shower stall. Over the summer I used the one with the tub/shower as that was closer to my room but it’s an old tub (the house is old) and I found it was too narrow and high off the floor - a bit too high to step in and out for a short person like me - so I chose the bathroom with the shower stall this time and it was perfect.

My daughter and I took a weekend in late October to the Catskills. How glad we were to have found this 'castle' as we called it. The whole setting of this historically rich home fits a trip to this beautiful scenic land. The owners make you feel right at home as does the décor and cozy furniture. It all fits neatly and wonderfully into the setting. There are many rooms available yet we felt as if we had a very quiet room in The Hunter overlooking a beautiful scene. The breakfast was outstanding, served by Sarah who obviously loves what she does. She also gave us a home base to come back to if we were in the area during that day. The owners have a lot of knowledge and experience with the area and can direct you to the many activities and dining in the area. They also have a large display of brochures and books about the area, tons of videos and games, and (my favorite) coffee and tea available at anytime. I would highly recommend staying at this home where you feel like a guest and experience a historical home of the area at the same time.

So sorry we missed your lovely review somehow - just wanted to take a moment to say thank you! We're so glad that you enjoyed your stay with us last fall and that you felt at home. That's exactly our goal, to honor the beauty and history of the house without any of the fussiness or formality that people often expect to find at a B&B. We want everyone to truly be able to relax and enjoy their stay, as if they were visiting friends or family. Hope to see you again sometime! - Sarah & Tony

I had the opportunity to stay at the Catskill Lodge in Windham several weeks ago and I tell you what... I cannot WAIT to go back.

The lodge is a beautiful Victorian with lovely rooms and amenities.

The innkeepers, Tony and Sarah, are very knowledgable of the area and are great cooks! Don't miss their french toast bake in the morning... YUUUMMMM.

The area is also very very beautiful with lots of trails and sights.

I highly recommend this place.

Enjoy!

My wife and I planned to stay here for two nights over our 4th anniversary, but ultimately were so unsatisfied we left a day early. When we arrived at the B & B there was no one to greet us, but there were fifty signs on the door and throughout the house indicating what you can and can't do, and also how to get to the room as it was tucked in the back through the office. There was also a sign indicating that everything we needed to know was in the book in our room. Before we could get to the room we had to take our shoes off and leave them in the mud room - i understand not wanting mud all over the house, but it seemed excessive. The room had an odor that permeated from the bathroom and got worse as the night went on. My wife took a shower and one of the other guests must have flushed a toilet because the water got scalding hot. We used the fireplace as our heat source, but even on low it got the room too hot. We looked in the book that they directed us to and it said breakfast was served from 8a - 10am, but when we went out around 9:40 no one was there, everything was cleaned up, and there was another typed note indicating we can have breakfast tomorrow at 8, 830, 9 or not at all - and that was the final straw. We made a cup of coffee and found another B & B in Woodstock to stay in for the night. The coffee was undrinkable as it had the same sulfur smell and taste as the shower water did. We left a note, perhaps a little harsh, indicating how displeased we were and left. We did get a phone call from the innkeeper a bit later explaining we should have called them and could have had a different room, and also that there was a sign indicating different breakfast hours. Yes, maybe we should have called them, but everything about our stay was so cold and impersonal we felt like we were an inconvenience .Also, I guess we missed the breakfast sign in the mess of 50 other signs - and why not just change the book then? We travel a lot and have stayed in numerous B & B's and have never been somewhere where the innkeeper was no where to be found and put typed notes taped all over the place. I don't know if this is how the place normally is as there are so many positive reviews here, but we will never return - and have told friends of ours travelling to the area to look elsewhere.

As the owners of Catskill Lodge, we're horrified to learn of the terrible experience you had here. We would like to apologize profusely: We understand how important vacations are, and we're extremely sorry that your trip involved so many disappointments, especially on such an important weekend for you. The innkeepers behind the ubiquitous signage and strict policies are no longer with Catskill Lodge. As of March 31, 2014, the B&B is managed by new innkeepers, Sarah and Tony. Their vision for Catskill Lodge, like ours, is one of rest, relaxation, ease, and enjoyment. We know we cannot change the fact that your anniversary weekend was ruined, but we do hope that someday you'll give us another shot to make it right.

Having based our decision on tripadvisor reviews for our accommodations, we were extremely disappointed when we arrived at the Catskill Lodge. Unfortunately we got this feeling as we pulled into the drive. We entered in through a small mud room on the side of the lodge and walked into the next room which was the kitchen. Our immediate sense was one of untidiness and lack of cleanliness. Sarah was a gracious host greeting us with a smile and giving us a quick tour of the two sitting areas on the first floor. She then showed us to our room which was a private room off the back of the lodge which we reached via the kitchen and laundry room. There was a private entrance from the outside which was nice. However, we again felt a sense of uncleanliness in our room. We were hungry and headed out to eat. Upon returning we were ready to retire for the evening. When we turned down the bed we were extremely disappointed to find sheets that were extremely old and worn. Both the regular sheet and fitted sheet had numerous holes in them and also had spots that were extremely worn about to become holes. The only heat for the room was a gas fire place which when on, even on low, made the room extremely hot. We went to open the window next to the fireplace to let some heat out but no screen on the window. We did open the other two windows which were next to the bed which helped. The bathroom was extremely small and in need of some TLC. The following day we ventured out for a long day of hikes and foliage peeping. We showered up, ate breakfast (disappointing), and headed out. After a long day of 8 hours plus hiking, horseback riding and more fun stuff we returned to our room to find that the Inn does not provide any normal housekeeping (ie: fresh towels or bed made up). We were tuckered out and just wanted a nice shower before heading out for dinner. We noticed in the laundry room a laundry basket of unfolded towels with a note on top saying, "Clean towels"....we called Sarah to inquire and she informed us they do not provide any housekeeping unless previously requested. She did come over and fold us fresh towels and left them outside our room, we did not know this until we opened the door about an hour later to go grab a cup of coffee. A light knock on the door would have been nice.....Anyway, that night we were awaken in the middle of the night by a loud bang....we had no idea what it was. I thought something fell off the shelf in the bathroom. However, after waking I noticed a piece of trim about 8 feet long had fallen off the wall/ceiling above our door. We were supposed to stay there for 3 nights but could not make it. We checked out a day early and found a bed and breakfast down the street with a room available, Albergo Allegria. The cost was the same but the accommodations, service, food, and housekeeping there were night and day compared to Catskill Lodge. You can read my review on that Inn on here as well. Just an all around very disappointing stay.

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts. We were so surprised and dismayed to read your review as it was the first time we had any indication that you were anything but perfectly comfortable and satisfied with your stay. We always encourage guests to call us at any time, night or day, if they have any questions or concerns, and we wish that had happened in this case so we could have had the opportunity to address the issues you experienced and to ensure that you had a more positive stay. We do have signs in the rooms detailing our housekeeping policy, which was actually originally inspired by guests requesting more environmentally friendly practices. For guests on short stays, we try to ensure that they have all they need for a comfortable stay when they check in, but then make it clear that we're more than happy to provide extra towels, toiletries, etc. at any time on request. It sounds like you may have been referring to a basket of linens in progress in the laundry room, which of course we wouldn't expect guests to have to dig through themselves. When we received your call for fresh towels we immediately came over and left a freshly folded set at your door after knocking and not hearing an answer. It seems there was some other unfortunate misinformation as well - there is a regular wall heater in addition to the fireplace, and normally part of the Delaware room tour is to point both out and explain that some guests prefer one over the other, as well as how to adjust the heat on the fireplace. If that didn't happen for some reason or could have been clarified better, we do apologize. As the house was built in 1893, there are certainly always things we are working on updating and improving, and it is a constant labor of love. The piece of trim coming loose was of course an isolated and very unexpected occurrence that took us by surprise as well, and we are very sorry that happened. We just wish that we would have known about it before you checked out as we would gladly have had it fixed right away and offered some sort of gesture with our apologies for the disturbance. We hope that you will consider staying with us again in the future so we can have the opportunity to make things right. As you saw from our other reviews, we pride ourselves on taking care of the property and our guests, and have had such a wonderful response - guests waiting to hug us at checkout, requesting our recipes to make at home, etc. Of course we know that we can't make everyone happy all the time, but we certainly like to try! And we hope that we'll have that chance again with you. - Sarah & Tony

Thought I had time to cancel and only lose my 10 dollar deposit. I think it is really poor hospitality service to charge ANYTHING when a cancellation is made so far in advance. I do accept responsibility for not looking more closely at how much time I had, but that doesn't change the fact that policies like these are TERRIBLE and seek only to profit off of people's changing schedules.

We apologize that you are upset about our cancellation policy. We do not believe that our cancellation policy implies terrible hospitality, rather it is a standard business practice. We believe that our cancellation policy is quite fair, particularly when compared to policies of other similar businesses. Our cancellation policy is a $10 charge with 14 or more days notice, a charge of 50% of the first night if 3-13 days notice, and the entire reservation charge if 48 hours or less notice. Other similar businesses charge a cancellation fee of a one night stay (or even two nights, because the reservation was for a holiday weekend) when less than 14 days notice is given. We believe that our charge of only 50% of the first night's rate for a cancellation less than 14 days in advance is reasonable and fair and in no way reflects upon our service and hospitality.

As my wife and I made our way up from historic Hudson Valley toward Niagara Falls, we decided to stop at Windham to break up the next leg up toward Corning. Given our appreciation of restored historic homes, and the primarily positive comments already posted regarding Catskill Lodge, we decided to spend a night there.
The overall experience was positive, but without question, the visit requires flexibility in accepting the implications of staying at an 1890’s former doctor’s home converted to a B&B.
1. Although not stated anywhere on the web site or even here at Tripadvisor, the hotel is in a cell phone dead zone. Thus, the owners allow guests to use the hotel’s land line whenever use of a telephone is needed.
2. The B&B itself is a charming structure from the outside, but as noted in a prior review, the building is under physical stress. The front porch, a spot which normally would represent a nice place to sit and rock while viewing the beautiful vistas and world passing by, is closed due to structural damage. We stayed in the Windham room on the first floor, which obviated the need to carry luggage up the stairs to the higher floors. The room was spacious, but the layout created a situation in which the person sleeping on the left side of the queen size bed had approximately one foot of space between the bed and the wall, making it awkward (though do-able) to get up in the middle of the night. Of the windows in the room…one had broken pulleys, so it was necessary to maneuver a screen under it to keep it propped open. The other window was broken and could not be opened. It had been an unusually warm day that particular day, and in the absence of a sorely needed ceiling fan, the room was stuffy and hot (finally cooled off some time after midnight). The bed was as hard as a rock but provided an adequate night’s sleep. The top sheet was worn with a hole readily noted. The in room TV also contained a built-in DVD player, which worked out well since we brought a couple of our Netflix DVD’s on the trip. There were somewhere in the vicinity of 70 channels available on the local cable service. The bathroom was fine, lots of space to set down personal items, only downside being a glass shelf above the sink with partially dislodged anchors, such that the shelf was tilted and could not be used. Shower had nice force and good water temperature. The provided soap and shampoo were rather sad. Although no doubt everyone is looking to control overhead in a tough economic environment, the soap provided was approximately the size of a communion wafer, and the shampoo was a dab of nondescript soap in a single use plastic thingie similar to that in which ketchup or mustard are provided at a fast food outlet…come on, guys, given the cost of a room here, I do think this could beat least a bit more generously handled.
3. The breakfast was great. Started off with juice, coffee, yogurt with sprinkled granola and a cantaloupe slice, followed by a plate including eggs to order, sausage, zucchini bread, pancakes, toast. We suspect that more often than not, guests end up being unable to clean off their plates.
4. We had dinner at the Italian restaurant Vesuvios, a 3 minute walk to the right, or a 30 second car drive for those of that persuasion…a truly delicious meal, very reasonably priced.
5. The WiFi was great…for those without their own laptop, a laptop is provided to guests in the common area.
6. The common area also had a trove of DVD’s available for guests, and a large screen TV for watching in the common area.
7. As has been previously noted, the local tap water does have a somewhat odd taste.
8. Beware the accent rugs if you are staying in the Windham room…as they were placed on hardwood floors with no adherent material in-between, both my wife and I came very close to falling to the floor when they slid…we ended up rolling them up to prevent a catastrophe.

So, all told a nice visit, but thought we’d share the specifics (pro and con)of our visit with prospective future guests.

This was our second time at the Catskill Lodge. Both experiences have been amazing! The lodge is perfectly located, and the inside is immaculate. The bed in the Hunter room, where we stayed this time, is soooooo comfortable. Plenty of great hiking and fantastic restaurants within minutes. The inkeepers are really what sets this place apart. Incredibly laid back, and friendly!!! They are excellent ambassadors for the area. They have lots of great advice on what to do and where to go. This is the only bed and breakfast I have ever stayed at, and the our experience at the Catskill Lodge has set the bar very high. If you are visiting the area you can not go wrong staying at this place. BTW, do not skip the breakfasts, they are unbelievable!!!

This B&B is nothing like the pictures on their web site. The place is run down and appears to be up for sale. Location is pretty good for the Catskill area, how ever I would not stay here again. Maybe in its day it was a nice B&B but 5hose days are long gone. We stayed in the Suite which was two bed rooms a sitting room, bath .
Ac did not work ( it was a hot night). Shower had mold. Like I said this room was not worth anything no matter the price.

I'm sorry that you did not enjoy your stay and I wish I that I had known that you had such a poor experience. Yes, the place needs some TLC, it is a very old house built in 1893. I try to be accommodating and create a homey welcoming atmosphere. The bath and the sitting room (the tower room) are the best parts of the suite! I have to say that I disagree with some of your assessments here as would many of my guests...

The reason for the title is that I can't imagine hell being any hotter than our room. I stayed in winter and we were downgraded to a smaller room without a private bath because we didn't answer our phone the first time. Then, we had a radiator in our room that was extremely loud and we couldn't turn off. The owner informed us the room got hot and we should open the windows if we needed. We opened our windows to the freezing rain, which did absolutely nothing for the temperature inside the room. I would never recommend staying in the Hunter room in the winter unless you're looking to sleep in a sauna. The redeeming factor that I gave it 2/5 instead of 1/5 is that the location is good and breakfast was fresh and filling.

They offer coffee in the dining room with a small fridge filled with some water and sodas. There is also a fridge in the kitchen where guests can store their own beverages as well.

Thanks for your question! As mentioned above, we don't have any refrigerators or microwaves in the guest rooms, but guests are welcome to make use of our common kitchen. There is a full size fridge just for guests and you would be welcome to leave anything there that you like. We have had guests in the past who keep kosher for meals, and typically they have simply requested vegetarian options at breakfast (which we prepare in dishes that are not used for meat) and then made use of our kitchen to prepare their own lunches and dinners. We're always happy to try to accommodate any other requests with a bit of advance notice. There are many great options in the area with vegetarian options and that would happily accommodate special requests. There is also a great restaurant in Hudson (Park Falafel & Pizza, about 30 min away) that is certified Kosher/Kashrut and has a wide variety of prepared salads, soups, desserts, etc. - some guests have stocked up there on the way to the B&B so they have great picnic options stashed in the fridge for the weekend. If you have questions or if we can be of further help please feel free to contact us directly or message again. Hope to see you soon! - Sarah & Tony, innkeepers
