Okay, so as some others have noted, this place may not be for everyone. If you want a TV, or are expecting a high-end hotel experience, chances are you'd be disappointed. If you want something different or unique, this place could be for you. The building is probably a money pit to maintain, and could use a coat of paint,...

The inn is an old railroad inn. The inn and furnishings date back to the late 1800s. Some of the rooms have clawfeet tubs. When you walk in the inn, it's like going back in time. All the staff we met was very friendly and helpful. Hope to go back in the spring.

I had never heard of the Balsam Mountain Inn until I started researching quaint mountain towns to visit. Once I added the towns of Sylva & Dillsboro to my must visit list, I needed somewhere for us to stay. That's when I came upon this little treasure that my fiance & I fell in love with! This place is honestly...

No tv means you chill out. The place tlc and make sure not to get an economy room without checking on the bathroom. Ours was built for a midget. Great dining so don't drive to dinner unless you absolutely need to. It's 40 minutes to Asheville. In summer the trees light up with fireflies and try to hog one of...

We enjoyed three nights here at Balsam Mountain Inn. From the moment of arrival everyone has helped us feel comfortable and welcome. Breakfast is hearty and delicious. Dinner is also lovely and so nice to just stay in and make yourself at home. We had superb service from Courtney at both meals! I love the fireplaces all around the gathering...

This has always been one of our favorite places to stay. We realize that we have been coming here for the past 20 years. We have missed the past few years but hopefully we will not miss any more. This place is so relaxing and the food is great.

If you need to get away from it all or you are just due for a vacation, this is a great place to stay. I took my husband to the mountains for his birthday and we stayed at the Balsam Mountain Inn. If you aren't familiar with the area and can't read a map, make sure to download the area...

Balsam Mountain Inn has been a haven for us for a number of years. The serenity offered by the rustic setting and taking a step back from the rush of modern life never fails to reboot the spirit. We have a favorite bed-sitting suite with a shower that provides a cozy cocoon to read, rest, and plan our adventures. Merrily...

The inn is decorated with period specific furnishing. The hallways are very wide and decorated with old steamer trunks Loved learning about the history of this railroad property. The bathroom in the room was very tight based on updating the hotel with modern features while maintaining the integrity of the original rooms. The rocking chairs on the ground level and...

First the pros: staff was great, enjoyed front desk Debbie and the restaurant Courtneys, breakfast and dinner were better than most hotels plus live music one night. My only criticism is cleanliness - old bldg I know but the lack of cleaning behind radiators, the beds, dining RM tables, ceiling fans, bed comforters, shower walls took away from overall positive...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Read, rest, ramble and romp at the Balsam Mountain Inn! Nestled among lofty Smoky Mountain peaks just off the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Balsam Mountain Inn was completed in 1908 to serve the highest railway depot in the east. Restored in 1991, the inn now welcomes travelers with 50 cheerful rooms, rocker-filled porches, a fine library and gracious dining. Plump pillows and soft comforters inspire pleasant dreams! In December, 2011, the Inn came once again to be owned by Merrily Teasley, the innkeeper who restored the structure two decades ago. An experienced rescuer of wonderful buildings, Teasley bought the derelict inn in 1990, and her certified rehabilitation effort helped the inn – already on the National Historic Register – experience a rebirth. ... more   less
