This place is aesthetically lovely. Great look. Cozy design. Rooftop bar! A lounge! (More in that in a minute.)The staff is as kind and friendly as I've come across. Very warm and welcoming check in process. Girlfriend and I were very excited to try this out for the weekend after Thanksgiving. But, as other people have noted, in the rooms there is NO storage. There are four pegs from which we could hang clothes in the vestibule of the room, two of which were prepopulated with robes. A small armoire would fix this. No place to put my clothes, clean or dirty, but at least I have a salt lamp the size of a large toddler. Our room has a window, but the window opens on the hallway. So, it has to be closed most of the time. The walls are THIN. I can hear everything happening in the hall, in room next door, and in the room above. (My room only has one chair to slide around. Not sure how they got thirty chairs to drag around upstairs.) I'm unsure why, in the process of sheetrocking these brand new rooms, there was apparently no effort made to introduce sound deadening material. The bathroom looks lovely, but has one of those inexplicably popular half-enclosed showers, so you're cold the minute you shut off the shower water. And the tiles are not sealed, so, while very attractive, they are gaining permanent staining in the area right in front of the sink. The HVAC for the room is one of those high efficiency models on the wall by the ceiling in the vestibule. It's placed perfectly for being able to regulate the temp in the bathroom, but it's not directed into the room in general, so the bathroom and vestibule are the selected temp, but the room is a significantly different temperature. Slightly different placement would solve this. Now, about that rooftop bar. It's closed for the season. We found this out as we checked in. As a consolation prize, we were told we could still take our own food and booze and hang out up there. And we could turn on the fire pits if we wanted. We have not done so. I feel about this like I do self checkout at the grocery store. Money is being spent in anticipation of a service. I am not providing that service myself. The NAME OF THE BUSINESS is "The Horton Hotel & Rooftop Bar". Currently, there is no rooftop bar. One of the primary reasons we booked (a year ago) was that we are wine and bourbon people, and it seemed good to have a place with a great view where we can partake and then not navigate (stumble) King St., or have to get an Uber to get back to the room. There is no indication on the website, even now, or in any communication from the hotel that the "& Rooftop Bar" part of the hotel would be our might be unavailable. There's not even any indication that the bar being open might be affected by weather, much less that it is "seasonal." (The description includes phrases like heaters and blankets, which seems to indicate winter usage.) Which leaves the lounge on floor 1. It looks cool and cozy, but it is small, and when I went down last night, it was full, even at the bar. Predictably, I'm not standing in line to sit at a lounge in my own 16-room hotel. The floor 1 lounge also has a host stand, which is placed directly across from the hotel front desk, BEFORE you get to the elevator to go into the hotel. So, when girlfriend and I walked in yesterday afternoon from grabbing lunch, there was an uncomfortable moment where I had to acknowledge that I am a guest here, not looking to go to the lounge before she would let us pass. I should NEVER have to prove myself to the lounge staff to access my room. I understand that it's completely a "first world problem", but paying over four hundred dollars a night (in Boone, for crying out loud!) for a standard king room should net at least standard amenities in the room, and should warrant full use of the property's features, year round. There's so much here, locationally and aesthetically, that is perfect. And again, the staff seems downright lovely. But, there are so many areas that just need a little more concerted thought to make the stay worth the rates.

Thank you for your detailed review. We are sorry we fell short of your expectations, but are glad you enjoyed our Downtown location and wonderful staff. We are always trying to improve our guest experience, and appreciate your feedback. We have some plans in mind to continue to create wonderful guest spaces in our rooms, but these plans are limited by nature of The Horton Hotel being a historic site (over 100 years old!). Our Rooftop Bar is open according to our Weather Policy, and we try to be as transparent as possible about this. That information is available online, but we are working on getting it more accessible on our website so our guests know what to expect for their stay. Guest and staff safety and wellbeing is one of our top priorities, and both our Weather Policy and our Lounge Host are in place to ensure our operations align with that goal. -The Horton Team

This could be a great hotel - but they scrimp on too many details. Self-parking is blocks away, for $20. No closets in the rooms, no place to put anything, only one chair, and no coffee maker. The woodwork is beautiful, but doesn't compensate for the tiny room. Very overpriced. The cocktails in the bar were great - best part of our stay.

We have stayed at The Horton several times. The staff is incredibly friendly and accommodating. They go above and beyond to make your stay as comfortable as possible. Other things we love about The Horton are: The location is unbeatable, especially if you are there to visit App. Parking in Boone can be nightmarish so having a dedicated parking spot is tremendously helpful. The beds are incredibly comfortable. I am picky about mattresses and often wake up after a night in a hotel bed with aches but every time I’ve spent the night at The Horton, I wake up refreshed and pain free. The rooftop bar is a great spot for a glass of wine before or after dinner. The view is spectacular. The decor is charming and unique. It’s all very welcoming and accessible and most importantly, comfortable. From the chairs in the lobby to the fuzzy rugs on the floor: it’s all impeccable. I know these next few will sound minor but it’s the minor things that really sell this place. The hand soap and other toiletries smell heavenly. They sell it in their gift shop and I am always tempted to get some. Maybe next time I’m there I’ll take the plunge. The hair dryers are fantastic. They are powerful and hot. Anyone who knows why this is important, doesn’t need me to explain. ;) Yes, many of the rooms don’t have windows but the CCTV with the feed from King St is pretty cool. I most recently stayed in one of the bottom floor rooms and, while I could hear footsteps it wasn’t horrible and I slept well. My husband and I will always try to get a room here first. We like supply local establishments and the parks are just that good.

Beyond disappointed at Paris rates in a tiny windowless room with noise from from the bar until wee hours. Just the worst value in 30 years of international travel. Will be notifying Boone town council to share feedback.

Thank you for your review. We apologize that the room was not what you were expecting! We are as transparent as possible about our lower level rooms, and how they are themed differently than the rest of the hotel. We have many projects in the works to ensure our guests have a wonderful experience in every room, no matter the level they find it on. Next time you're in the area, we hope you come back to enjoy the full Horton Experience.

Though we weren’t able to stay over at The Horton this trip, we discovered It’s a lovely view up above King St. The surrounding mountains and APP STATE below make a sweet breezy cocktail, and the drinks are good too.

We saw this hotel on PBS and totally bought into the vision of the owners. The room we booked was just perfect but that was more or less where it ended. In our experience it seemed that the loving touch of the owners was missing during our stay. For us on our thirtieth wedding anniversary what pissed us off is when you get three calls in advance to check in, and order a bottle of champagne that is not in your room when you check in. You promise and underdeliver so we told them to shove it. We spent a LOT of time in the rooftop bar because it is very nice with the location and view of 360 Boone. My personal takeaway is that the owners are hands on but they are cheap. Meaning that they are using students to fill bartending and server roles in what is a supposed be a top of the line rooftop bar. CMON Man! Totally average. The students struggled to keep up when it got busy and really you need a professional in there and when we sat in the lounge area service was even worse we left. Breakfast was pathetic. Cold stale scones not sure why in this town and in a hotel that promises quality at every turn you would serve crap like this with a server that was so indifferent. The gentle owners touch sure was missing when we were there. This is supposed to be a luxury hotel but no not so much when you take it in totality. Yes the bed and pillows were comfy just like your average Holiday Inn and Marriott. Average at best needs to improve to justify the hype and price.
