My family really needed to get out of our house and go out of town for a few days. All the little stresses of life were adding up….We found CHM online and my husband called the motel (which I suggest doing; it is always SO much better to make a reservation over the phone with the actual motel/hotel instead of booking online…you can ask questions, etc. and make sure that this is where you want to stay). Andy was very helpful and after making the reservation we jumped in our minivan and were on our way down to Cape Hatteras!!

We are currently staying in a suite and I’m so impressed by the motel location AND the staff, that I felt compelled to write a glowing review.

The suite is comfortable, clean, and has what we need (four kids 17, 15, 11, and 7). From our room we can see the lighthouse, the sound, and the ocean. The office staff have been so helpful: getting extra towels, a laundry basket and laundry detergent, even scissors to cut off the tags to all our beach souvenirs. I think my husband has been looking for reasons to go to the office just to talk to the staff because it means so much to to him to feel welcomed. One staff member said she grew up here and was telling him some of the history of the area.

The beach is beautiful; the pool is big enough so you don’t feel like you are imposing on other guests that are already there; the basic kitchen is just right; the beds are comfortable and NOT all lumpy. Linens and pillows very clean.

We are so glad that on a whim we decided to drive 7 hours from VA down to Buxton. We got exactly what we’ve wanted and NEEDED: a few days away, a min-retreat, a little bit of heaven.

I came to Buxton to fish and booked this motel because they advertised amenities for fishermen such as a cleaning station and freezer. These were provided and the freezer was especially welcome. My room overlooked the ocean and it was clean and fresh when I arrived. The beds were comfortable and the room had all the necessary amenities including a coffee maker and small refrigerator. It was spacious and quiet so you would be lulled to sleep by the sound of the breakers outside. The motel is starting to show its age and could use a few upgrades but it didn't detract at all from my stay. However, if you are traveling now with C19 restrictions in place, there was no room service provided. That means you needed to bring towels and bedding to the office for replacements. Which was happily done. Otherwise it was up to you to keep your room tidy which was no hardship for me. The staff was very helpful and friendly throughout my stay and added to my comfort. One small thing was the last hurricane had deposited about four feet of sand into the parking areas and they were not fully cleared as yet. Even so there was ample parking but you may have to walk a few extra steps. Overall it was a pleasant stay and you could even fish right in front of your room. What could be better than that?

What a great trip!! Thank you CHM for all you did to make our trip fabulous despite the passing Hurricane. The townhouse is rustic but perfect for a family. We enjoyed our balconies literally on the sand dune. It was perfect for questionable weather. We weren’t just stuck staring at each other in a hotel room. There’s plenty of room for everyone to spread out in the townhouse, and covered balconies were very enjoyable the whole trip.
As the storm passed, Cape Hatteras Motel had light equipment clearing the sand that had blown over the parking lot and unit entrances. That was followed up by a crew shoveling the sand. They were awesome! We had such a great trip despite almost cancelling due to weather.
The pool and hot tub were still open until 9pm on Oct. 1st. The ocean was warmer than the pool, but the hot tub was delightful.
Now I read some reviews about sand and amenities. This is not a Ritz. You are at least an hour from fast food. A broom and dust pan were provided on each floor. You are literally on a sand dune, there will be sand. If you want to get off the grid, walk out on the beach and make memories, this is your place.
So many smiles and memories made with my sister and teenage nephew. Thank you Cape Hatteras Motel! These memories will last a lifetime!!

You have to scratch your head some time when you look at a wooden structure on stilts literally built into a Sandune within feet of a roaring ocean in the center of the hurricane region on Cape Hatteras. In Short this is a weird and wonderful place to put a hotel or a motel as it were in this case, but Boy, is it an experience . We were skeptical when we drove up to the place, because from the outside this wonderful idiosyncratic lodging looked like it was from the outside, a shingled structure on its last legs, about to fall into that sand dune, on whose other side the ocean was raging. There were indeed signs of robust reconstruction or recent renovation on closer inspection, including new staircases and siding but when we got to our room on the top floor, any doubts vanished, and we were in complete awe of the location. If you can manage three flights of wooden stairs – there is no elevator – you can get a very large room on an outside corridor, with a balcony, running the whole length of the ocean, facing building, where you can look directly over the tip of the sand dune and see the waves coming in literally right beneath your nose. This is an intoxicating site in the evening, and in the morning when the sun rises and you get the full blast of the morning wind and the waves, and literally with dolphins dancing in the morning light and those crazy surfers right beneath you catching waves in the frigid December ocean to the beach. This town is mostly closed in December but this hotel is not, and is highly recommended not just for the view, but also because someone has put some money into this place recently , and the room was very clean a very viby collection of 50s and 60s type retro furniture and a nice little kitchen and a very good bathroom and sink, all pretty spotless and also a great bed. There was no breakfast in the off-season, but they may have that in the off-season when I am sure the prices go up. While this place is still standing and evading the strong wins and storms that sweep through this area, it is well worth a visit not just for the view, but also for the whole funky thing of it all. Indeed, it reminded me of Frank Zappa‘s description of the famous motel he stayed at on the waterfront in, I think, Seattle, as described in the song, Mud Shark, where, he said, you could stick a pole out the balcony, and do anything you want with it if you know what I mean… Including catching mud sharks in that case. In this case there are dolphins and of course you wouldn’t want to do that. … but enjoy nonetheless.!!

Mother nature provides the real appeal here. What a location! The hotel is built on wooden pylons right over the sand. Every room (unless you book a space in the "sound view" building) overlooks the ocean. With this location, all this hotel has to be is clean, comfortable, friendly, and reasonably priced, and it clicks all these buttons. We stayed in the townhouses: you get 2 bedrooms (one with a queen, one with a full and a twin) and on the top floor a living room and kitchen. Also, two balconies: one is private and opens from the queen bedroom, and the other is semi private (privacy dividers between patios) that opens from the living room. The living room is quite nice and a cut above a basic motel, the bedrooms and bathrooms not so much (very basic). Great deck furniture (rocking chairs and 2 high tops) to enjoy your outdoor space. There's also a pool and hot tub; small, but clean and nice to cool off from the beach. There's not much to do around here but enjoy the beach, fish, or do watersports, but what else do you need? Just a word to management: please don't ask us to strip the beds prior to us leaving; I'm not really sure who thought of this bizarre policy but can't really see how this is COVID related or why this would be our responsibility.

Thank you for a very kind review. We ask you to strip the beds to help the housekeepers who have additional cleaning responsibilities due to Covid. It allows them to save a few minutes so that the next guests can check in at a reasonable time. We do hope you will visit again!

My husband, adult daughter and I stayed here one night on a quick trip through the Outer Banks. Our first room we tried had a must order to it, the manager was VERY accommodating in helping us get a room that was
more acceptable. He let us check 2 more rooms. The second new one we checked out was was very good- he even upgraded us because of the trouble.

The rooms could use some updating but were clean and comfortable - the 2 bedrooms suite was very spacious.
If you want something fancy, I wouldn’t choose this motel. If you want something wonderfully close to the beach where it’s comfortable and affordable for families, this would be a good choice!

The office has a cute little gift shop area and the owner has some nice photo cards that are for sale, along with other local artists things.

Hearing the waves of the ocean right outside our door was the best part ! We would stay here again.

The place is under new owners. We placed the paper in our door for service aka towels etc and they never showed up in the time window. Had to go ask for clean towels after 5 pm and no apology from the owner just excuses. Dirty towels sat outside our room all week because they literally never came by after telling them twice. The owner lady looks more worried about being on the phone and smoking cigs. Anyway the pool is nasty, full of sand and black spots that are either mold or algae or idk but it’s not clean. Saw the guy throw several scoops of chlorine in after being there 3 days and scrape the sides but no vacuum. I’d love to see the PH levels on that thing. Oh and there was a lovely toilet in a box outside the room for your relaxing entertainment. Yuck. Wanted to love this place from years gone by but I was sadly not impressed. Oh we took our own trash out too. Seems if you request that you won’t get that either since they can’t even get you clean towels delivered and the dirty ones picked up. Sure we can take out our own trash but point of staying in a hotel is to not have to. I am worried to see how this place rebounded after a storm. Seems all the employees quit or something.

Could not have asked for a better beachfront weekend getaway. Literally right on the beach. Basic room, clean and comfortable. Gracious hosts left a bottle of champagne on the table inside the room! Recommend for a quick off season getaway. Rocking chairs on the deck so you can relax outside your room.

The location is perfect. Right after Avon and at the start of Buxton. Loved being able to walk out right on the beach and enjoy the views from the outdoor seating area! Would recommend having some sort of door mat to cat sand at the entry of every room, along with an in room broom. Staff was very friendly and helpful.

We liked this place so much we added an extra night to our road trip so we could enjoy it a bit longer. We were here off season so it was quiet even though the weather was unseasonably warm. The motel is rustic but very comfortable and directly on the dunes. The covered porches have rocking chairs, there are lines to dry your towels and swim suits. The room was very clean and decorated with a retro beachy vibe. The only drawback I can see might be that the oceanfront rooms are across the street from the pool and office and there are many stairs to climb. These weren't a big deal to us but it may be an issue for some folks.

There is a swimming pool on the dune side of the property. As I described rm. 310 was literally on the beach. The passenger ferry to Ocracoke is $5. The Cape Hatteras lighthouse has no fee. Rental fee of golf carts are determined by the hours of use. The Wright Brothers exhibit and monument cost $20/person. No discounts. You’re welcome.

All the buildings are elevated on pillings so there are steps. We have a ramp to our first floor suites across the road from the ocean. It is not handicap rated, but may be navigatable depending on your individual needs. Please give the office a call for more info. Thanks for your interest in Cape Hatteras Motel.

Absolutely, our business was built on surf fishing! You do need a salt water fishing license these days which can be purchased at any of our local tackle shops.

The gentleman above was correct - I think you are thinking of Corolla. We do have Beach horseback rides in Buxton but that's something different than what you're thinking of. The horses on Ocracoke are viewed from an enclosure.
