The motel is bordered by the Cape Hatteras National Seashore and the Atlantic Ocean. The motel has a fresh water pool with a hot tub. We offer oceanfront rooms with either one king or two queen beds. We also offer two bedroom suites, complete with full kitchens. These units are complete with linens and dishes. What a great trip!! Thank you CHM for all you did to make our trip fabulous despite the passing Hurricane. The townhouse is rustic but perfect for a family. We enjoyed our balconies literally on the sand dune. It was perfect for questionable weather. We weren’t just stuck staring at each other in a hotel room. There’s plenty of room for everyone to spread out in the townhouse, and covered balconies were very enjoyable the whole trip. As the storm passed, Cape Hatteras Motel had light equipment clearing the sand that had blown over the parking lot and unit entrances. That was followed up by a crew shoveling the sand. They were awesome! We had such a great trip despite almost cancelling due to weather. The pool and hot tub were still open until 9pm on Oct. 1st. The ocean was warmer than the pool, but the hot tub was delightful. Now I read some reviews about sand and amenities. This is not a Ritz. You are at least an hour from fast food. A broom and dust pan were provided on each floor. You are literally on a sand dune, there will be sand. If you want to get off the grid, walk out on the beach and make memories, this is your place. So many smiles and memories made with my sister and teenage nephew. Thank you Cape Hatteras Motel! These memories will last a lifetime!!

Have been visiting the Outer Banks for 60 years. Did not want to stay north of Nags Head due to too many people, traffic, etc. We were looking for a place that was ocean front and decided to give the Cape Hatteras Motel in Buxton a shot. Via the internet and all we could find out, the walk to water was 50 yards or so right out the door of your room. We arrived at our 3p check in time and were told our room would be ready in a few minutes that housekeeping was a little behind and they would call us. We checked out the pool and walked around the complex a bit. About an hour later, having not had a call, we walked up to our room to find the HVAC people working on the AC. We ran into a motel employee who agreed to show us another room that was available. After looking at it, it was identical to what the other room was so we took it. Why they did not just put us in that room initially, I do not know. Room was clean and appointed appropriately for a 2-star motel. However, the driving force for us to pick this motel, was not the room as much as having the 50 yard access to the beach right out of the door. The beach is in fact there, but was inaccessible during our stay due to the beach being rebuilt. There were 3-bulldozers, 2-FE loaders, generators, pumps, and lights utilized 24 hours/day to perform this rebuilding. To access the beach we had to walk several hundred yards around this construction. The surf was very muddy from the water/sand being pumped onto the beach. Nothing was ever mentioned about this at check in nor any time leading up to our reservations. This was hugely disappointing. We complained at the office and were reimbursed for one of our 3-nights. Otherwise, we had a perfect stay. Looking at pics since the beach was rebuilt, it is beautiful. We will return, but will inquire about the beach access first.

I try to stay here on my way back to Virginia for 2 or 3 nights after visiting my father in Florida. I have stayed here 3 times since March 2021, and each stay has been remarkable. On my first visit, Will provided me with a list of places to eat that I have frequented on subsequent visits. I will be back.

The one very positive element of this place is that the rooms (at least ours) are right on the beach. You walk out your door, down some short stairs, and ..... you are on the beach! Other than location, however, the motel does not live up to its high price. There is no maid service in the rooms, no matter how long you stay. The floors get very sandy and we had to take out our own trash. The lonely ice machine was out of service the entire 4 days we were there. There are no phones, and you have to cross the main highway to get to the office, where you are lucky if it is open and someone present. This place would be great at about half the price, but not at close to $300 per night. I'd try someplace else next time.

We are sorry that you did not enjoy your stay. To respond specifically to your issues: we have not offered daily maid service since COVID and we are not alone in the hospitality business in this regard. We do offer it if someone asks specifically and clean towels and amenities are always available upon request. We are waiting parts for the ice machine which our repairman has ordered but like with many other things they are caught up in a supply chain issue. Our posted hours are 8-5 but there is always someone on the property and the contact number is on the door. Again, we are sorry you didn’t enjoy your experience.

Oceanside room with a beautiful view. The efficiency has minimal (at best) kitchen supplies and the room could use some paint and updating. It is clean though, so that’s good. No clock, no curtains, and only 2 forks, spoons and knives. No bowls and just a couple of plates and coffee mugs. Bring your own dish soap and toiletries. The pool area was nice but watch out for bird droppings. I would come back despite the few downfalls.

Thank you for your review. We work each winter on painting and updating so if you could let us know the room ( please give us a call) we can be sure to add it to our work list. Amenities and extra kitchen items are always available by request at the office - and that includes toiletries. We’ll make a note about the pool deck. Mating season for gulls always presents a challenge! Hope yo see you again!

My family visits almost every year, and we love it. Great location, excellent service. The townhomes are very well appointed and comfortable. Everything you might need is in the kitchen. We open the bedroom doors to the beach at night to fall asleep to the sound of the ocean. And coffee first thing in the morning, on the broad porch, is the best thing in the world. The place is CLEAN. Very family-friendly with a pool for the littles to safely swim in when the waves are crazy.

Mother nature provides the real appeal here. What a location! The hotel is built on wooden pylons right over the sand. Every room (unless you book a space in the "sound view" building) overlooks the ocean. With this location, all this hotel has to be is clean, comfortable, friendly, and reasonably priced, and it clicks all these buttons. We stayed in the townhouses: you get 2 bedrooms (one with a queen, one with a full and a twin) and on the top floor a living room and kitchen. Also, two balconies: one is private and opens from the queen bedroom, and the other is semi private (privacy dividers between patios) that opens from the living room. The living room is quite nice and a cut above a basic motel, the bedrooms and bathrooms not so much (very basic). Great deck furniture (rocking chairs and 2 high tops) to enjoy your outdoor space. There's also a pool and hot tub; small, but clean and nice to cool off from the beach. There's not much to do around here but enjoy the beach, fish, or do watersports, but what else do you need? Just a word to management: please don't ask us to strip the beds prior to us leaving; I'm not really sure who thought of this bizarre policy but can't really see how this is COVID related or why this would be our responsibility.

Thank you for a very kind review. We ask you to strip the beds to help the housekeepers who have additional cleaning responsibilities due to Covid. It allows them to save a few minutes so that the next guests can check in at a reasonable time. We do hope you will visit again!

Cape Hatteras Motel (CHM) is situated literally right on the Atlantic Ocean. We’re lulled to sleep by the sound of waves and wake up to sunrise on the horizon rising out of the green waters. I have never stayed at a place in proximity to the ocean like CHM. The morning following our first night, I felt like I’m wavy, the effect of watching waves constantly rolling in and receding. They granted our request for a room on the top floor (the stairs have 33 steps). Their king bed room is spacious, with a toaster in addition to a microwave. I wish the cables of the flat screen TV were made neat with cable plates; however, this is just aesthetics and neither impacts comfort nor convenience. There is a short counter on top of the adequately-sized refrigerator for snacks. The long counter where the sink is outside the bathroom has plenty of room for toiletries even if the Keurig is also placed on one end. It has a window that looks out on NC-12 and CHM’s office, three other buildings on the dunes and the swimming pool. Their office has souvenirs for sale and books that we can borrow. Enjoyable novels too! Before we arrived, I read reviews that CHM is outdated. It is family-owned and an establishment celebrating it’s 50th season. Salt water corrodes faucets and metal drain. I can imagine that it is difficult to maintain faucets and drains preventing signs of rust. I stand by the Dawsons’ for that reason and, furthermore, with the following: - our bed is comfortable so are the pillows, sheets and blanket; - Our towels and face towels are white, not dirty white, still fluffy or almost new and 100% cotton so it is absorbent; - There are new countertop wipe towel cloths on the counter and a hair dryer by the sink; - The night stands and dresser with mirror are relatively new; - The shower curtain has no mildew; - The description of how our room was sanitized on their welcome letter (picture uploaded) has a long list of their efforts to keep us safe. This is not a mere claim as we noted how long it took for their staff to clean the room beside us. Also shown is a picture of their staff sanitizing a room’s windows; - Mrs. Jan Dawson has a personal touch. Aside from what I knew before meeting her, i.e, that she (also her husband) is gracious to thank reviewers and is not defensive when the review is not as positive, she took the time to introduce herself to us and ensured that everything’s satisfactory! Stay at CHM, enjoy the Atlantic crashing on the beach in a clean, spacious room with necessary provisions for your comfort.

The place was clean and staff was kind and so helpful. All guest wave and are nice. Best views and beach! Only two bad 1. The decks had weak spots. 2. if you are in a town house and get pople that smoke around you, you don't get to enjoy the outside decks and views. You might get to be out a couple of times.

Thank you for your review. We would appreciate a call back regarding what you called “weak spots”. As you probably noticed we do a considerable amount of maintenance work on the decks and would address any known issue ASAP. We do not allow smoking in rooms but do allow visitors to smoke on the decks. Very sorry that you had neighbors who made your porch sitting difficult. However in a townhouse you do have a private deck with the same view off the master bedroom. We hope to see you again.

My family really needed to get out of our house and go out of town for a few days. All the little stresses of life were adding up….We found CHM online and my husband called the motel (which I suggest doing; it is always SO much better to make a reservation over the phone with the actual motel/hotel instead of booking online…you can ask questions, etc. and make sure that this is where you want to stay). Andy was very helpful and after making the reservation we jumped in our minivan and were on our way down to Cape Hatteras!! We are currently staying in a suite and I’m so impressed by the motel location AND the staff, that I felt compelled to write a glowing review. The suite is comfortable, clean, and has what we need (four kids 17, 15, 11, and 7). From our room we can see the lighthouse, the sound, and the ocean. The office staff have been so helpful: getting extra towels, a laundry basket and laundry detergent, even scissors to cut off the tags to all our beach souvenirs. I think my husband has been looking for reasons to go to the office just to talk to the staff because it means so much to to him to feel welcomed. One staff member said she grew up here and was telling him some of the history of the area. The beach is beautiful; the pool is big enough so you don’t feel like you are imposing on other guests that are already there; the basic kitchen is just right; the beds are comfortable and NOT all lumpy. Linens and pillows very clean. We are so glad that on a whim we decided to drive 7 hours from VA down to Buxton. We got exactly what we’ve wanted and NEEDED: a few days away, a min-retreat, a little bit of heaven.
