Our wedding experience with The Inn on Pamlico Sound truly could not have been more incredible. It is a lovely venue and the thought put into every aspect of our big day by the staff was more than we could have asked for. The staff are more accommodating than any you will be able to find elsewhere. Even last second requests were met with an easy-going attitude and all around positivity. It’s easy to tell how much every staff member cares about making your experience one to remember. If you want to make your wedding the best it can be, please consider letting The Inn on Pamlico Sound run the show!!

This Inn is exceptional and was the perfect spot to celebrate our 31st Anniversary! Discovered them during Covid though they hadn't opened back up yet. So were thrilled to be able to finally book a visit. Ashley and Alicia were very helpful and enthusiastic about our upcoming stay. They recommended a room and made the arrangements. On the day of, I called as instructed and Melissa graciously let me know our room was ready for an early check in. Our room, Morning Glory was lovely, cozy and offered an amazing view of the sound. Melissa went out of her way the first night insuring we had everything we needed. The breakfasts in the restaurant each morning were gourmet! So thankful the chef thinks outside of the "cereal box" and created some wonderful dishes. And we must add they have some of the BEST coffee we've experienced!! Amy, Jasmine, Aylah , and her sweet mom, Natasha were some of the loveliest and hard working ladies we've met. They went above and beyond to make sure we enjoyed our special breakfasts!! And what a treat on the last morning to have live music too. Their amenities are extensive. We enjoyed the use of the kayaks, paddelboards, pool and yes the yummy treats in the afternoon!! We were able to extend our stay and though our room wasn't available we were moved to another suite, Sea Oats. A lovely room with a private deck, where we enjoyed a romantic dinner for two at sunset. Karen, the housekeeper was so sweet and extremely helpful. Even moved all of our luggage when we changed rooms! And made sure we had extra micro popcorn so we wouldn't have to share! ; -) (inside joke!) And we must mention our conversation with the owner, Steve. We thoroughly enjoyed talking with him about the history of the inn and his vision for giving couples a much needed getaway to rekindle and relax. What a huge blessing!! Will the Inn on Pamlico Sound be put on our "MUST RETURN" list?!? Absolutely. These folks are family now.

nice room, a stumble from the bar/restaurant. patio off room overlooking bay. food excellent. breakfast included with a $5 charge for server tip. good choices would like pancakes/waffles with grainy nut seed dough just had standard fluffy white. as good as they do it would also like real maple syrup vs the standard corn syrup but i'm picking. fruit fresh. excellent presentation. evenings mid week they had live music. thats a huge good vibe setter. i not aware anybody goes to that length. its run by a meticulous ex-new yorker (nobody perfect) with keen focus who cares. examples are in the details like the 1 use napkins that feel like cloth. nice little thing that feels higher end and when you add up lots of those little things you get a special feel.

My husband and I had the most perfect stay! Our room was beautiful and clean. The view was outstanding and enjoyed a fabulous gourmet breakfast on our private balcony. It was so quiet and peaceful, we felt relaxed as soon as we checked in. The owner and staff were very friendly and made sure you had everything you needed. The restaurant was amazing. We had some of the best meals we have every had there.

My wife and I were due to be married at the inn in September of 2019. Unfortunately, the weather had other ideas, as Hurricane Dorian swept through the islands on our wedding day. Despite needing to make their own preparations for a major storm, Steve and the rest of the Inn’s team made us feel comfortable, reassured us we would have the wedding we wanted, and immediately got to work to find us an open date the following spring. It’s hard to understate how accommodating everyone was during what was a hard time for us emotionally, especially in the face of a major storm that was threatening their livelihoods. Unfortunately, the following year held more difficulties in store, as the pandemic had begun and it would ultimately be unsafe to have our wedding on our rescheduled date. Despite having already given us so much leeway in rescheduling our wedding, they were so dedicated to us having our day that they once again helped us find a day the following year in hopes that it would be safer. Unfortunately, that day also came and went with Covid still being a major concern, but the inn never gave it a second thought, once again finding us a perfect day the following year. Fast forward to 2022, and the months leading to our wedding could not have gone more smoothly. Meredith and the event team helped us through some stressful points in our planning, taking the reins when we’d become indecisive, and offering us ideas for the ceremony we’d not yet thought of. Through the entire process, she made everything digestible even when we’d procrastinated, and made sure at no point we felt overwhelmed. Melissa, the hotel manager, was patient and accommodating with us through all our various changes in room assignments, of which there were many because my wife and I are both horrifically disorganized on our best day. She somehow managed to navigate our chaos without any difficulty, which is a feat in and of itself. The weekend of our wedding was everything we wanted it to be in every single way. Our guests (not to mention the two of us) were extremely impressed by the gorgeous rooms, the amazing food, and the incredibly kind and welcoming staff. Melissa was once again amazing in fielding everything our guests could have needed. Meredith made sure that once it came time for us to have our wedding, our entire experience was stress free (as much as a wedding can be) and we could focus on just enjoying one another and our loved ones. The food was incredible, the atmosphere was second to none, and the staff was some of the most warm people we’ve ever encountered. The inn went above and beyond for us in every way possible, and worked hard for us across years of planning and rescheduling to make sure we had amazing memories of our wonderful day. I could not recommend them enough, and we can’t wait to come back for a visit and see everyone again. -Allison & Jacob-

The Inn is a solid “3” but doesn’t measure up to a “5.” It’s not terrible….but far from excellent. The daily breakfast was very good. The staff was friendly and helpful although we never did meet the owner. The room was fine; spacious with a nice view of Pamlico Sound. It was clean but housekeeping is only every 3rd day which was a bit surprising. The room furnishings were just adequate, nothing special. The grounds were not well maintained. The garden areas were unkept and overgrown with weeds. The parking lot is rutted and badly in need of paving. The signs are old and in need of replacement. The “private beach” on the sound isn’t really a beach, just a bit of dirty sand leading to Pamlico Sound which, while interesting to look at, is full of critters and weeds and not the water I’d want to put my feet in. The beach equipment for guests is stored under the building and the chairs are rusted and gross….I went to the store and bought a new beach chair. Biggest drawback is the location on highway 12 …there is literally no way to take a pleasant morning walk unless you enjoy walking on a highway in the heat. You need a car to get to the beach. We booked relying on the stellar reviews which, after spending 7 nights there, leave me mystified as to how anyone could give a 5 rating to the place. Lastly…while they claim that the Inn is a “European style” boutique hotel, as a seasoned traveler (24 trips to Europe plus countless trips elsewhere) there is nothing “European” about the place. It’s just an average hotel in a mediocre location. We had an okay week but there are better choices in the Outer Banks.

Response from Steve Nelson, Owner at The Inn on Pamlico Sound
Responded 3 weeks ago
Susan, it was with some consternation we read the review of your and Layne Huttenberger’s stay with us from August 27 thru September 3rd. We are glad you enjoyed our top ranked breakfast, beautiful Jasmine room, and breathtaking views of the Pamlico Sound. Some of the quite negative areas of your review had us somewhat puzzled. We could not understand your negative reference to European Style Hotel. For the record, as demonstrated by our website, we refer to ourselves as a Boutique Hotel, and to our dining services as European Style Casual Fine Dining. As 10-20% of our guests book us internationally, many in that clientele refer to our lodging as European style, likely where you saw the term applied to us. As you label yourself a seasoned traveler, one would expect an understanding that the term does not mean it looks like our facility was moved here from Brussels. We encourage you to search the term to assure yourself it is a valid description from the international clientele who so labels us. The European hotel model indicates smaller, more traditionally decorated rooms, often with supplemental bedding in fold outs or futons, more included (as opposed to a la carte) amenities, like our the top ranked breakfast, fresh daily baked goods, stocked guest snack baskets, bicycles, kayaks, theater, etc., all included in our room rates. A search for European style hotels produces a common reference; they are more like a bed and breakfast or Inn. Hence The INN on Pamlico Sound. We were thrown by your comments on what sloppy gardeners we are. Our landscaping is deliberately designed and implemented, with over 90 fruit trees (apples, pears, peaches, pomegranates, nectarines, plums, bananas, and figs), accompanied by strawberry beds, blueberry bushes, grape and sweet potato vines, carrots, peppers, and other vegetables, a wide selection of herbs, and heavy plantings of clover to refix nitrogen in the soils. As all are grown organically, we use the time tested method of companion planting. We utilize natural local fauna, like our wealth of perennial local flowers, only a few of which were in bloom during your late August visit. Pictures you posted to demonstrate your point were beds of white and red clover which fix the nitrogen for our fruit trees, and the garden at the entry to our restaurant, which features mint, lemon grass (a natural mosquito repellant planted all of our facility) and black eyed susans, only a few still in bloom. We are grateful for the many compliments we receive from arborists and horticulturalists who stay and dine with us. We were unable to fathom your negative comment on our private beach. Our beach is not a sandy ocean beach, as we are waterfront on an estuary where vegetation grows down to the water’s edge. Estuaries are a fragile ecosystems where sea grass is washed in each year by winter storms. New vegetation starts to grow in the mat of deposited sea grass in early spring until it produces a verdant green beach cover, which lasts into fall. Winter storms pull it all out and redeposit it over the course of the winter, starting the process all over again. Modifying that process by clearing vegetation manually results in erosion and destruction of the habitat where our guests watch fiddler crabs roam as they launch their kayaks or, worse, clearing it with herbicides which pollute estuary waters. Our facility and location have been reviewed across platforms and around the globe. A first in 18 years of operations are your negative comments that we are not just a mediocre location, but a mediocre location with no place to take a morning walk. As shown on one of three pictures on our main web page, we are directly across Route 12 from the Buxton Woods Preserve, the largest temperate zone coastal forest in North America. The entrance to the Buxton Woods is a hundred yard walk from our driveway. You can walk for hours without seeing another human. Your comments on our parking lot are equally unfathomable and a first in almost two decades of operations. It is in no way rutted or in need of pavement. Our lots are beds of grey #7 stone with brick and wood borders installed as intentionally pervious so runoff from our property does not find its way into the sensitive eco system of the Pamlico Sound estuary. Regarding your comments on servicing rooms, like most hotels we continue to deal with the health ramifications of the pandemic. Prior to your check in, in the package you received when you checked in, and read to every guest at check in, is text on our very clear cover sheet which states: -Housekeeping is performing services for stays of 3 nights or more. If you’d like to schedule a service notify the Front Desk before 9PM or first thing in the morning. Guests must vacate the room for Housekeeping services and notify the Front Desk they have departed. If you need towels, pillows, sheets or toiletries, just see us at Front Desk. – We would have been happy to service your room each day. As guests remain sensitive about others in their air space as Omicron variants continue to spread, we will continue this common policy for at least the balance of this year until updated vaccines are available. Your review asks how anyone could rate us five stars. The apparent answer is guests looking for a boutique hotel experience with a top ranked restaurant on our remote island inside of a National Park. Your review, so at variance with the norm for our guests, did not make sense until we read the notes in your guest record as entered by our staff early in your stay. They noted in effect you would likely be happier at the Hilton in Kitty Hawk than in our small boutique hotel on our remote estuary. We wish you the best in your future travels, and hope you find accommodations more suited to your preferences. Steve Nelson CEO, Café Pamlico and The Inn on Pamlico Sound

My husband and I got married here in 2020 and it was such a gorgeous venue to have our wedding at. The views of the sound are unmatched! Since we had a credit from our wedding, we decided to book the room we stayed in on our wedding night for our anniversary this year. We stayed in the Jasmine room and the king bed was probably the comfiest bed I’ve ever slept on. The robes and little snacks they leave in the rooms is a nice touch too! Also, everyone who works here is so kind and helpful and really made us feel welcome during our stay. We definitely want to come back again!

Our biggest negative issue with the Inn is that the day before we were scheduled to arrive we received an email informing us that a small wedding would be taking place on the Saturday evening of our stay. The pool would be closing at 3 PM, there would be a chance that the noise levels might be higher than usual during that event it said but that the Inn did not expected it to be an issue. We’re glad that the Inn did not expect it to be an issue but the Inn did not give us any options other than this is what was happening The last evening of our stay all we saw and heard directly out of our window was not the view of the sound it was the view of the wedding which went on till about 10 o’clock that night. Not until that day did we realize we wouldn’t be able to walk out to the water. So our take on the small wedding is being told about it less than 24 hours before our arrival is a poor way to do business. We should have been told when we made the reservation so we could have known in advance and made a decision based on full disclosure. Our time away is valuable. After our stay when we emailed the Inn with our displeasures it went onto deaf ears, as did our other negative comments. It seems they have a spin for everything. Such as rusted beach chairs of which I sent a picture and was told an employee put old ones in the wrong place. A lack of advertised amenities, I gave examples and was told that was from their old website, well that's the website I made my reservation on. Then I mentioned the cheaply made chairs in our room with the small wobbly table and was told that's the type of furniture the younger generation likes, really! And lastly their pride and joy, the restaurant. Don't be early for a reservation, we made that mistake. We got there a little early, the dining room and even the outside dining wasn’t busy at all. We were seated without issue and placed our order. It was almost a half an hour later and the hostess was near our table when I nicely asked her if she could check on our order. She immediately told us that we had come before our reservation time and that everything was cooked to order. So here's the spin I got on that. They have room service orders as well so that's why they go according to reservation time.We were really looking forward to our stay at the Inn. But the staff has to realize that stellar reputations take work. We would not have come knowing there was a wedding on the Saturday night of our stay. And they should have at least refunded what we payed for that night. They did nothing!

Response from Steve Nelson, Owner at The Inn on Pamlico Sound
Responded 13 Aug 2022
We wish we could provide a complete copy of our response to this challenging guest, but are not allowed enough characters. Since her primary complaint in her extensive email related to our lack of care for mobility, it and our response will provide the reader an idea of the guest we dealt with. This is the actual text of her complain and our answer. We answered with fact, logic, and reason, which only made her more angry 1Q. The first thing we’d like to bring to light is the total disregard for anybody that has any type of mobility handicap. Nowhere in any of your advertising does it state that there are stairs leading to all of the upstairs rooms, the restaurant, and even the entrance to the Inn. There’s not one ramp offered. The two handicap parking spots that you do have we had to walk onto gravel up stairs made of bricks into the office, no ramp. When my husband and I asked the lady behind the desk if there were any accommodations for somebody with mobility issues because, I had realized that there were stairs everywhere, she actually ignored me, no answer whatsoever as if I hadn’t asked a question. We knew then that our getaway was going to be compromised. My husband is 68 years old and he had to make sure that he was behind me at all times as my legs shake when I have to walk upstairs, walking downstairs it’s just as difficult and the stairs to our room were steep giving me anxiety...And now I circle back to the lack of caring for people with mobility handicaps. In the tub in our room above the soap space there was a missing small bar that I could have held onto getting in and out of the shower. You could see where it had come out of the tub and was filled in, not fixed or replaced. 1A. It appears Ken booked your Morning Glory room online on April 22nd. While we have fully ADA compliant rooms and are a fully ADA compliant facility, the room and floor which he reserved is neither a handicapped accessible room or floor nor represented as one. As a 12 guestroom boutique hotel, we are required to have one fully ADA compliant room, to which we have added two mobility friendly rooms. We have two fully compliant ramps for access to our buildings. Both are shown inset left below. The one on the right of the first pic provides access to ADA compliant and mobility friendly rooms. The other, on the left of the first pic, provides access to our restaurant, dining decks, and the main floor of our West building where you checked in. Access to the West building main floor is thru the dining decks, which not only provide fully compliant access but which we expanded in 2013 to provide access for extra-wide wheelchairs based on the needs of some specific guests, going above and beyond ADA requirements. A third ramp, inset right, provides ADA compliant access to our pool, downstairs theater, docks, beach, and Sunset Point areas. We checked the guest notes section from Ken's online reservation. In no place does it indicate any mobility issues nor did we receive any communication regarding mobility issues prior to your arrival. As we were not aware of your need for mobility friendly accommodations, you were provided the accommodations Ken chose in his online reservation. We're unsure how to respond to your statement that the front desk professional who checked you in ignored a mobility access question. It sounds from your description of the event that she simply did not hear your question. While we accept your comment at face value that she deliberately ignored you, this is entirely out of character for Alicia Packer, one of our most experienced and valued staff, or for any member of our staff.
