The last time we stayed at this motel was 24 years ago, but we have never forgotten it. The local owner was wonderful and welcoming. It has since changed hands, but the physical structure remains mostly the same. We found the new owners’ kind, and the electronic kiosk for check in is effective. The attendant on the other end was able to answer practical questions, like “Where do we find the ice machine?” Sure, there is a spot of rust at every nail on every stair tread as you ascend the back stairs. The small tilt out windows above the tub used to provide wonderful ventilation but are now rusted in place. I do wish they would get rid of the couple of random and broken-down furniture items on the beach side and broken ac units between the buildings. Despite these minor details, these 1960s era buildings seem quite sound, and it still can offer a great experience. The new owners are making noticeable investments in the rooms themselves. Our two double room provided very comfortable new mattresses, a large flatscreen TV, a nice new chest of drawers, a full-sized drip coffee maker, mini-refrigerator, and a microwave. The very private balconies are wide. The Kitty Hawk high sitting chairs with a connecting middle table were most appreciated for seeing over the balcony. The opposite shared balcony is good for a brief sunset view over the Pamlico Sound. There is a regular small outdoor pool, a lap pool and a very nice indoor pool suite with a hot tub and bathrooms. With true beach facing location, this low frill lodging is more connected to the ocean than most. There is no breakfast of any kind offered here although a small supply of coffee is offered in the room. Nearby Sam and Omie’s, The Dunes, or Grits Grill all offer excellent hot breakfast. This is a quiet and non-pretentious place offers clean rooms with full-on ocean facing private balconies. It is not for picky or fastidious types who cannot handle minor flaws or an occasional smoker who may light up on their private balcony. Fishermen seemed to gravitate to the cheaper first floor dune view rooms in the north building. The second and third floor rooms in both buildings offer excellent water views above large natural dunes. The third is slightly better than the second. It is not really a big deal if you must have that view and wind up with a second-floor room. This motel offers great value, and we would most definitely stay here again. Though on a smaller scale, The Blue Heron has more amenities than some larger cooperate counterparts. I would like to be on that balcony or that bench along the boardwalk to the ocean right now. We prefer the more convenient and less congested South Nags Head location.

We booked with Booking.com, which I will NEVER use again! We did not get an ocean front room as booked. We had a crappy room over the office in the parking lot. The owner did not give a crap about what we paid for and what he gave us. It was a full size mattress on an iron beefcake and it felt like it was a box of lumber! It was a horrible experience and we left immediately. Our one year anniversary and it was almost ruined. Actually, I'm glad, because it was a dump. It was very clean, ill give them that, but a complete dump! We moved to the Comfort Inn and she had a King Oceanfront on the top floor with a fabulous bed! Couldn't have worked out better! Will never use booking.com or visit that crappy place ever again!

Free parking, truly ocean front with balcony and located away from crowd. Three pools with one indoor. Comfortable bed and HBO stations. What a great stay for a reasonable summer oceanfront price. We will return soon. Located close to Kill Devil Hills and main road with accomodations.

First time staying at The Blue Heron. The room was clean and upgrades were being made at the motel. The bed was comfy , new flat screen , small coffee pot , refrigerator and microwave in room. No hair dryer . Nice balcony to enjoy . If you are looking for an upscale place to stay this is not for you. This is an old school motel right on the beach, it’s worn and tattered, however if you wanna just enjoy the beach , relax and enjoy the views this is the place. We stayed on the 3rd floor and we had breathtaking views. Location was everything. The beach was right out of the back door. The pool was closed for the season and I did not get to the indoor pool or hot tub. The gentleman that checked us in was very nice. Overall I had a great time and I would definitely stay again . I’ll will post some pics of our room.

Supposedly renovated motel but renovation seemed to consist of a new toilet, new beds (which were surprisingly comfortable), odd linens (with the pillowcases put on inside out to hide stains), some pictures on the wall, and covering up the black mold in the bathtub with grout. New windows and doors are needed. The older manager seemed to play a bait and switch with the room I reserved, saying we had talked when we had not and showing me a reservation that he had not sent to me. The younger manager was very nice and polite and tried to be helpful. The room could have been a whole lot cleaner. The AC was like staying at a jetport. On the positive side, it is a great location, just steps to the beach, there are indoor and outdoor pools, the little balconies face the sea (you definitely want to be on the 3rd floor for that), the room has a microwave and small fridge and large screen tv, all of which worked well, and it seems to be pretty well sound conditioned from side to side, you do hear upstairs neighbors.

Had a great stay at this motel in Nags Head. Close to fishing pier and outlets, gorgeous quiet part of the beach. Lots of restaurants nearby. Friendly management and clean facilities. Huge king room with a great view from the 3rd floor.

Overall a good value with beautiful view and clean room. Sheets and towels were clean and king room was updated. Indoor pool area was nice. Plenty of parking and a few restaurants in walking distance. Coffeepot was broken and dirty in room i saw housekeeping they exchanged for a good one right sway. No elevator 3 floors, no housekeeping asked if we needed towels or took our trash in 3 days. I understand not coming in during covid but they could offer a basket to sit outside for dirty/ clean exchange like i have seen other motels do. There is a mechanical lift to move luggage and groceries up and down but they didn’t tell us at check in about it we found out in time for check out thankfully and didn’t have to lug it all down 3 flights. Common areas need some improved housekeeping like sweeping around indoor pool same trash moldy tabletop and cig butts for 3 days untouched. I would stay again in this motel-but they can do better with minimal effort.

We had not been back to the outer banks since 2009 so we decided to stay at the same place we did 11 years ago. Decor had really not changed much in 11 years but we didn’t mind as long as room is clean, which it was. Indoor pool and hot tub are awesome and spacious. Great location on the beach but recommend the 2nd or 3rd floors for the best views. We had a very relaxing vacation. Great value for the money. Our only 2 complaints are the beds are way too soft, and the new management could be more welcoming and friendly. The maintenance men that were painting outside were way more friendly than the owners. Overall we had a great time.

Sure wish I’d read the reviews before we booked! I basically had to re-clean the room, and that’s not good during this COVID-19 craziness. There was splatters all over the mirror from others brushing their teeth, there was pubic hair in the soap dish in the bathtub and the overall condition of the room was very poor. To say this hotel has seen better days is being extremely kind. The floor was clean and the towels smelled of bleach which is about the only good things I can say. Way overpriced for the condition of the room. It’s on the beach but you don’t really get a view because of the dunes. We made it one night and checked out for a better place. Do your homework and book elsewhere.

I made a reservation for a top floor efficiency with a view on July 5th for Sept 7th-11th. I got a conformation showing that. When I arrived they stuck me in a regular room, #1 , behind the dunes. No efficiency. So just because you reserve a room you may not get what you reserved. Don't know whos fault. The motel or Booking.com or maybe they thought they would lose a sell of someone else wanting the efficiency and figured since I was traveling solo they could move me. The guy at the deck just sort of laughed about the screw up. The room was ok. Toilet seat was about to fall off but they are working on improving the motel now with the new owners. Plan on fighting flies. (no fly swatter in the room)
