Detailed Reviews
Joy was an amazing host. Beautifully appointed accommodation with a rustic charm. So comfortable, quiet and perfect in every way. It was so lovely exploring the property. Our home cooked breakfast every morning was sensational. A short 12 minute walk into town. No noise from the busier roads - bliss. We cannot recommend Hillside highly enough. It's the little touches make all the difference. Thank you Joy, we can't wait to return.

+1
We had organised to go to Albany this weekend but that was postponed at last minute! We were in the mood as it were to go away so we booked in York.
Mind you, after seeing the temperatures forecast - 38C, we maybe should have reconsidered!
However, Sophie’s retreat, a self contained cottage in Hillside Country Retreat has proved delightful. All mod cons and most importantly effective air conditioners, it has been fun and as a bonus we bought the dog👍. The owner was very prompt in her replies and made us feel most welcome.
I would happily recommend this place and may even return in canola/wildflower season.

Lovely location steeped in history with lots of old farming equipment on the property, surrounded by rambling gardens, minutes from town centre and supermarket. We stayed in Sophie’s Retreat - a rammed earth, timber lined spacious 2 bedroom self contained unit with verandah. Decor is very rustic - combination of historic, 70’s and modern. Kitchen stocked with enough utensils to use stove, oven and microwave. Showers have plenty of hot water with good pressure. Requested unit without shower over bath due to my mobility issues. Beds not quite to my liking as I have a back problem, but plenty of blankets and pillows provided. Every effort has been made to make it homely with a selection of books, DVDs and board games available. A pleasant and relaxing couple of days.

Perfect getaway location for couples or family in York in a lovely peaceful setting. As a couple we choose a room for 2 which was clean, with a comfortable bed and had all you want for a short stay. We had breakfast in the package and were treated to a perfect delicious spread by our host Joy. Thanks Joy we had a perfect stay.

We booked the Lodge for 5 days. We also were delighted that we could bring Oscar our aging cat who needs daily medicine. The Lodge was perfect, very well equipped and with heating and air conditioning - and we needed both in the same 5 days! Joy was the best host ever and very helpful. We had friends join us in the bed and breakfast so joined them one morning in the tea house for breakfast which was amazing. We also used the bbq. We had stayed before in one of the larger houses but had forgotten how large the site was and how peaceful it is. Easy walking or drive into town. Highly recommended.

This place is a wonderful find. 2 families and 2 furry kids stayed in the Julian cottage. Joy who owns the property is a lovely host, who met us at the cottage and showed us around, and even had the fire going when we arrived! The cottage was gorgeous, clean and had everything we needed. Plenty of room for two families, with four bedrooms, the 8 of us were very comfortable. The kids loved exploring on their bikes and the dogs had a ball! York township is not far and walking distance, lots to explore and plenty of eating out options as well. We had a wonderful time and looking forward to going back again. Definitely 5 stars!

would highly recommend this accommodation. It has old rustic charm and well looked after rooms. Beds very comfortable and only just a short way from town which was lovely and quiet. And dogs are accommodated for. There is self contained accommodation and B & B . We stayed in B & B so had a really delicious breakfast and enjoyed Joys wonderful company. Would not hesitate to return again.

We booked two houses and one smaller unit for my husband’s birthday. We were greeted by the host, Joy, on our arrival. She was delightful and had included a couple of little surprises in our house to make the birthday weekend extra special. The houses are perfectly set up for sharing meals and games. We had three generations staying for the weekend and everyone enjoyed it. Our dogs loved the weekend away too!
We had lunch and morning teas in York, all within walking distance. We will definitely be back.

A lovely weekend escape, in a sweet little cottage, just right for the two of us plus dog. Very friendly reception, everything in excellent order, clean and welcoming. Thank you for a perfect base for our short York getaway.

What a lovely place Hillside is. A gem in York and Joy was just marvelous.
It is fresh, clean, and very comfortable. We stayed for just three nights in the "Morris". Best King bed I have ever slept in. Beautiful tranquil grounds in a perfect setting, easy walking distance to the town. If you don't have the breakfast you will be missing out in a big way. Absolutely delicious.
