Me and my friends visited here for a day out . Surrounding nature was fantastic. And the unique way of getting to this place via a raft was awesome. There are several packages including various facilities if you are in for an outing. Buffet was...More
Very good impression from the very beginning. Welcome drinks, wet fresh scented towels and over all free foot massage (really needed after 24h trip). Our sea view standard bungalow was very distant from the main building which was perfect! First because it was peaceful and...More

A lovely setting by the beach but remote. (However you can't swim in the sea, you just have to use the pool)

WE would not have considered taking a trip to The Elephant Ophange from Ranweli as it would be about a 2.5 hour journey each way. It is also somewhere that is not advised to visit due to the treatment of the elephants - not actually an orphanage as such.
Many other places that trips go to are even further away. We had a tour for a number of nights with a car and driver, but if you want to use Ranweli as a main base you could still go off for a one or two night tour and return to Ranweli after that (car and driver is the way to do it - the good hotels have driver accommodation, so you would not have to pay extra for that.
Colombo well worth a visit IMO and that is only an hour os so away from Ranweli and you could even use a train to get there, but would need a tuk tuk or something to get you to the train station.

We did this tour with Walker tours as recommended by the Virgin rep. I believe it was about £80 for the 2 of us including a couple of other stop offs. Ok Anthony offers the same trip slightly cheaper but we preferred to be in a nice air conditioned taxi rather than a minibus . We had our own personal guide ( Ask for Adrian he was brilliant) we also went to the temple of the tooth relic on the same day and our guide was to knowledgeable . Enjoy your trips
