Terrible place with mice in room. Shower was very dirty and only small amount of wood available. Would not recommend this place for 170 per night . Cold at night very poor heating . Place is run down . Had a hard time entering and leaving as gates were locked

I booked a cabin with 2 double beds for the night. (This was approximately $40 more expensive than a cabin with only one double bed at the time of booking.) Upon arrival I was told that this cabin had no hot water and that I could have a cabin with 2 twin beds. I said this would not work for us. After some clarification, I was told the cabin being offered actually had 1 king bed and 2 twin beds. I said sure and I was taken to the cabin. The cabin I was brought to had one double bed. I explained that not only was this not what I was promised, but that this cabin was in fact less expensive than the one I booked. I was then taken to one of the newer cabins which has one single bed and one pull out couch. At this point, the check-in process had already taken about an hour so I said sure. Since the restaurant on site is closed, and since there are no restaurant or food options nearby, the only reason I booked a stay at this hotel is because the room advertised a full kitchenette. When we got into the room I saw that only a sink and a mini fridge was available. There was also no cookware, utensils, or amenities in the cabin - not even soap or handsoap. Luckily I had my camping stove and the hotel attendant provided us with a pan that we could use to cook the burgers that we brought with us. They also provided soap upon request. The cabin was heated by a propane stove. The stove was turned on when we arrived and was kept on the lowest setting. By the middle of the night, the heat was unbearable and our thermometer read 29 degrees Celsius. We made the decision to turn off the stove and hope that the heat would hold at a reasonable temperature until morning. There must be very little insulation in the cabin because by 4am the temperature read 18 degrees and it felt chilly. The propane stove is NOT straightforward to turn on so this was fun to play with at 4am. Needless to say this was a sleepless night and anyone traveling with children would find this to be a huge inconvenience. We packed up at 8am and left the key on the counter in the room because no attendant was to be found. I also want to mention the very aggressive dog who was kept on a leash next to the front desk. I love dogs and have been around them my whole life but I was terrified when this large dog lunged and me, baring it's teeth and barking. I felt extremely lucky that the leash didn't break. I hope this review paints a better picture of why this is at most a 2-star establishment. I will say the cabin we stayed in was very clean and spacious.

I emailed with this place a few times before booking to ensure that it was pet friendly (and which type of cabin is, in case there are ones that are not) and to confirm a couple of the amenities that were unclear on the website. They confirmed it’s dog friendly and there’s a $20/night pet fee - perfect, no problem. However, upon arrival we tried to check in and the internet was down so we had to wait about 20 mins to check in and once we were able to the young man advised that the dogs are not allowed INSIDE the cabins, they must stay outside. He said we had one of two new cabins and dogs were not allowed inside (I don’t know if that because they were the new ones or not). So what is the $20/night pet fee for then??? I said there was no chance my dog was being locked outside, that’s not what we booked. He proceeded to tell me that he understood and would let the dog inside for the night while his boss wasn’t there but his boss is coming the next day so the dog must’ve outside in the morning. Again I said no, and I told him to cancel my reservation and I’m absolutely not paying a cancellation fee for this and I’ll drive 45 minutes back to Banff to find a place that will let my dog in. This whole time the dog has been waiting in the car so before going for the drive back I take her out of the car for a pee break and he’s following me telling me I’m not allowed to cancel, repeatedly. I keep telling him to just cancel my reservation and that I am going to back to Banff to find a hotel. I put the dog in the car and I get in and he is knocking on my passenger side window still telling me no, I can’t cancel and they will not refund me. I wish there had been another human being around to hear this discussion because it was so absurd. I should have trusted my gut when I read other poor reviews and had poor communication from them initially and not gone. I didn’t even get to see if there was hot water or a flushing toilet in the “new cabins”. Also note, the restaurant is definitely still closed and there’s a handful of snacks available in the store. The internet was down the whole time we were there so it was cash only.

I'm not very picky about lodging, but Kootenay Park Lodge failed even basic standards. The next night I stayed at a hostel which was much more comfortable than this place and only cost 30 dollars. Some issues with Kootenay Park Lodge I could deal with- for example, there was no curtain over the window in the bathroom so any neighbor walking by can see you shower or use the toilet, so I put a towel over the window. There was a large 3cm gap above and below the door in cabin 2 where bugs could crawl in, so I stuffed towels there too. The restaurant was closed and this wasn't mentioned on the website and there were no others within 45 minutes, so I bought microwavable pasta from the general store to eat. However, too many other things were dealbreakers. Cabin 2 did not have a working shower, so I was moved to Cabin 6. Cabin 6 had a working shower, but no hot water in the shower so I took a cold shower. The worst was that the toilet in Cabin 6 did not flush. I went back to the front desk when I noticed this around 9pm, but there was nobody there. I gave up and just didn't have a working toilet all night. In the morning I noticed that the smoke detector in Cabin 6 was opened and didn't have a battery in it- and each cabin has a woodburning fireplace. I understand that they are in the process of remodeling, but they are not ready for visitors and should not accept bookings. For over 260 dollars a night, I would expect at least indoor plumbing and basic safety.

Second time staying here. Beautiful spot. New ownership, so hopefully they will put some money into it as it needs some TLC. Rustic is a good word to describe it. It is not the Ritz. Old cabins, but mine had a very comfortable bed. Restaurant was closed so we brought our own food and did a BBQ. Turned out great. Staff is very helpful. Especially Sydney, who is just a delight. Could not be more helpful. Will stay there again on my next cycling trip as this is a perfect overnight spot when riding from Banff to Radium.

My husband and I along with our 2 children stayed here from 16-20 August. We were in the 1 bedroom Family Cabin with kitchenette. We very much enjoyed our stay here. The cabins are rustic, and basic - so if you’re looking for a fancy place - this isn’t for you. There is no cell service, or WiFi except for in the main lodge/store. It’s not the fastest by any means, but you’re pretty off grid at this place, so given that - it’s good enough. We brought our own food & stored it in the mini fridge / our own cooler. There is a shared BBQ & Grill on the property which was fantastic. We were gone most of the day hiking, and exploring so this place was absolutely perfect for our needs and it was exactly what we were looking for. I absolutely loved how peaceful it was, unlike most resorts in Canmore/Banff which are crowded, noisy & busy - this place was totally perfect. There is a beautiful little trail that runs along the River, my kids loved exploring the trail there. My only complaint is that the lighting is very dim & it’s very dark in the bedroom especially. But other than that we were very pleased. It was clean, and comfortable. We would definitely stay here again.

When I booked this cabin it seemed cute and rustic. We were used to.camping so it seemed perfect. The cabins are old and plumbing seems to be original (short toilet and separate hot and cold taps) we were afraid to use the shower given the condition it was in. The beds are very comfortable and the rooms are clean but again everything was really old and the site is completely off grid. They offer drip coffee makers in the room with no supplies. A mini fridge and microwave are in the room. There is no wifi in the cabins but you can access it in the lodge. The exterior of the cabins and the lodge/restaurant is not being maintained and the area that has "staff only" is piled up with refuse, it is disgusting that guests can see that. The lawn was cut and the cabins are cute. Make sure to bring yr own cooking source because the restaurant has nothing but salads. The girls that work there are sweet and hard working. The clerk at the front who is probably the owner had his nose in his phone the whole time we were there and not very interested in helping you. Not sure this place will remain in business long in its current state which is sad because it is a piece of history being built in 1923 for the railroad and being the only place to stay in the Kootenays. If you are staying make sure to check out the path beside the bridge for a spectacular view. If you like rustic you will like these cabins, just come prepared.

I booked in January and when I cancelled well within the T &Cs for a refund, I am told that as the booking was with the old owners, therefore it's nothing to do with them. So had I not cancelled, I would have pitched up in peak season with no alternatives nearby to be told to pay all over again. Surely when such a business changes hands, the old and new owners go through future bookings and monies lodged and agree what's going to happen and either refund the customer before changeover or honour the booking with its cancellation rights. I can't see any changes on the website about change of ownership, it looks identical to when I booked. So whilst it may not affect future bookings going forward, at least you are fully informed.
