Detailed Reviews
We found our stay at A Schooner Inn a delightful experience. The restored property is a short stroll from the beachfront boardwalk and captures the ambience of the 19th century fishing community. The fellowship provided by the innkeeper, delicious and beautifully prepared breakfasts combined with comfortable clean quarters made our stay memorable with absolutely no cause for complaint.

Stayed at this B & B for 2 nights in June. The room was quite large, extremely well equipped with a wonderful mattress on the bed making for great sleeps. Not far from St. John's and quite scenic. Colette was a very good host providing suggestions of where to go and what to see and is an excellent cook giving us breakfasts to remember! We would definitely stay here again.

Our room was not available due to a double booking. Collette left the premises not long before our expected late arrival from the airport and left it up to her guests to tell us about the mix up. Fortunately, they had noticed a note with the owner's phone number so we called and were given a dubious version of a booking service having "messed up". Collette maintained that she "notified" the booking service 2 weeks prior to our arrival that she had a double booking, yet the couple in the room stated they had booked the DAY BEFORE and that the other guests were regular tenants. We have used this service numerous times and were ALWAYS contacted in a timely fashion if arrangements were altered in ANY way. Being contacted on our day of travelling to the Schooner's Inn was unacceptable and, we believe the problem originated with the owner, not the booking service. They contacted us AS SOON as THEY were made aware of Collette's mistake, which it seems was THAT VERY DAY ( MAYBE the day before? As this was a travel day, we were not aware this situation was unfolding. Collette should have dealt with the situation in person, not left it up to her embarassed guests to deal with. A GREAT place/host is determined, not just by how things are dealt with when all goes well, but by HOW THEY FIX problems when they arise.
To her credit, the owner DID find us alternative arrangements at a hotel an extra 15 min away, not great for the travel weary. It wasn't a BnB, but it was a comfortable room, clean and much bigger than any of the rooms at the Schooner Inn. We were very disappointed on missing out on the SCHOONER experience.

I appreciate taking the time to write a review of your reservation and arrival experience at our little heritage Inn. I can only imagine your disappointment frustration and anxiety upon arriving late at our Inn, only to find there wasn't a reservation in place for you. I wasn't expecting you as our guest of the Inn that evening. To my knowledge it was cancelled. You are correct. I wasn't at the Inn and was out when you arrived. As all other guests had checked in, I had left to pick up some smoked salmon for breakfast, a 15 min drive away. Our guests had mentioned how they heard about our lovely salmon breakfast dish so I decided to surprise her with it in the morning. Regarding this situation you brought forward, you booked your accomodations through an online booking company. Two weeks prior to your arrival .... I noticed that I had made an oversight in that a reservation I received, required two rooms, and I had only entered as one room. These guests were to check in two nights prior to your booked reservation date. There was nothing I could do except cancel your booking as our Inn was overbooked This was was a case of humor error. I simply didn't enter the reservation correctly As Innkeeper, I try my very best in giving excellence in guest services. It was a mistake. It's was not intentional by any means. As you can see from the majority of over 30 guest reviews posted, each and every guest experience is important to me, as owner and innkeeper. I go out of my way to ensure that. Upon discovery of your reservation error, I immediately contacted the online booking company and informed them. I asked them what I should do. I added that given it was my mistake I would gladly phone you and explain what had happened. But the company replied that it wasn't necessary and said they would contact you. I assumed your reservation change was made. However your reservation information kept coming up on my system stating "reservation modified" which set off a red flag to me. I hadn't seen this comment prior to yours. On your expected day of arrival your modified reservation was still there on my system. So early in the morning, I contacted the online booking reservation company I was concerned. I m sure on your return home you may have discovered telephone calls from the company trying to contact you,if you have an answering machine. The next thing I knew, at 8:30 PM, one of our guests called me while I was out picking up my smoked salmon, saying you had arrived. You can imagine my complete surprise. I made every effort to try to explain to you on the phone what had happened to my knowledge. I tried to tell you I had received an email from the online booking reservation company telling me that they had cancelled the reservation and were trying to secure new accommodation and that they were trying to locate you. You simply refused to listen, just continually shouting at me through the phone.I also told you I was on my way back to the Inn and if you waited I would be there shortly. But you refused, saying all you wanted to do was for me to find you accommodation, which I did within 5 minutes of having chatted with you. It was the nearest place to ours, and yes, it was a 15 min. drive. but closer to St. John's and right off the TCH divided highway, with a Tim Hortons across the Street. I explained to the hotel, whom I have an excellent relationship with, what had happened and asked them to give you their best room. I tried to be as gracious and understanding as I could as I knew you perhaps had a long day of travelling to arrive to NL, hence your impatience and rudeness. It was most embarrassing to the lovely guest who let you use her cell phone as well I feel, as an unacceptable way to speak to me, regardless of what I may or may not have did. I am very sorry that you did not get to enjoy what so many of our guests from this past summer have raved about in terms of a wonderful NL experience at our bed and breakfast. It was, as I stated, an unfortunate error on my part. I feel I did what I could, given that things just didn't look right with the reservation, right up to the very day of your arrival. I had thought it was taken care of. In our everyday paths, mistakes just sometimes happen. No one plans for them. Yes, I made a mistake. I apologize for your inconvenience. However, my mistake does not give reason for your anger and shouting. Anger and shouting will never be an accepted way to communicate our feelings in our society nor in our little heritage Nl Inn, either on the phone or in person as it never resolves anything. Yours sincerely Note: It is highly recommended that guests travelling to NL, carry their own personal cell phone for emergency and other reasons should someone wish to contact you.It is also important to ensure your service provider has coverage in NL. It is suggested this be done prior to your travel plans commencement

Colette is so friendly and welcomes you with open arms. Her breakfasts are spectacular and her passion for running her B & B shines through every detail. She treats her “youngens” (young adult travellers) as if they were kids of her own and connects with us older crowd as if we were long lost fiends. I highly recommend staying here to explore several areas of Eastern Nfld.

My wife and I stayed at the Schooner Inn for one night. If you want a real Newfoundland experience with an amazing hostess - Colette - you must go here! Like most Newfoundlanders we met, Colette is very friendly, charming, generous and the perfect Inn Keeper! She immediately made us feel welcome and took a true interest in us. Breakfast is truly an experience. Colette wore a captains hat and we - the guests - were invited to wear sailors hats around the table. In addition to excellent coffee and juice Colette cooked - right in front of us - toutons, Newfoundland steak (fried baloney), eggs, etc. Excellent! Her stories and experiences made the 2 hours we spent at breakfast fly by. She works hard to make each of her guests experience a unique and remarkable one and she does it naturally and with ease. You MUST stay here if you want a very memorable stay...and its a very short drive to St. John's.

Just got back from an 11 day road trip from Newfoundland and after covering almost 3000 kms by car , it was a delightful trip and great to explore a new area of Canada.
We arrived at the Schooner Inn on the last leg of our trip and as soon as we pulled up it was everything we were hoping for ..... so cute !!! We had been emailing Colette prior to our stay and once we met her in person we instantly clicked .... what a wonderful lady !! We got our room ..... i believe the Crows nest was the name ... charming room with a great view and nice ensuite ..... charming decor and just what we were looking for . We met another couple while there, turns out they lived less than 30 minutes from us in Ontario and we hit it off from the start !! Colette mentioned that she hosts a Special Dinner party a few nights a week ... we were all over it .... it was a cooking / dinner type party Newfoundland style ..... exactly what we were looking for yet we hadnt seen that anywhere during our visit till then,
I cant tell you how much fun it was .... we all got together, ate Mussels , crab and even lobster .... and the dancing with the ugly stick was a pure hoot !!!! This by far was our highlite of our trip and surely something we will always remember ......
If you are looking for a "True " Newfoundland experience then look no further .... this place ticked all the boxes and then some !!! We were looked after like royalty and met some wonderful friends ... cant ask for anything better !!!
Thanks so much for the hospitality Colette and Bob ... and Roy was a blast !!! Thanks for making our memories of Newfoundland so wonderfull !!!

Thank you so much for your lovely review. So glad you all had such fun time and that you enjoyed our NL hospitality. It was the last cooking adventure of the season for us so yes, so it was memorable too. I find that cooking together brings people closer as if they had been friends forever. We always serve fresh NL seafood that's the sweetest, most succulent, in my opinion, of the Atlantic provinces. We re delighted you enjoyed it. This upcoming summer we're introducing our newest cooking adventure called "A taste of Toutons" at breakfast. I hope one day you will return to our beautiful province and that you ll join us in cooking up a storm Til then my friend ...."long may yer big jib draw....." to your good health and happiness cheers colette

A wonderful old house with lots of charm. Your host serves amazing breakfasts with lots of local fare. She used to teach cooking and it shows in the meals that she prepares. Easy to find, just outside of Holyrood and about a half hour from the St John's airport. Handy for visiting attractions on the Avalon Peninsula.

Colette is one in a million. We could've stayed around that breakfast table listening to her for days! She is the quintessential Newfoundlander...full of charm and a generous spirit. Felt like meeting up with a long lost friend. This retired high school foods teacher outdoes herself! The breakfast is amazing from local berries in season to local eggs and meat. Every bite was accompanied by a story and it was made all the better for it! Beautiful heritage home close enough to St. John's but quieter and right on the harbour. Everything is beautifully kept and the gardens in full bloom. So happy to have been blessed to stay here!

From the moments of greeting, to the final artful breakfast, our stay at A Schooner Inn was a delight. Met at the door by a smiling and gracious Hostess, we were led up the low-rise stairs to our Crowsnest room - "cosy and charming" but not lacking sophistication. And besides decor, it was clear this room was designed with the real needs of the traveller in mind: no scent in the room or bath (nothing smells better than clean!), a magnifying mirror on the dresser, two bedside tables, a ceiling fan and a functioning window for that cooling sea breeze, low impact bath products and lots of hooks in the bath and bedroom. Though there were guests in two other rooms on this floor, sound was never an issue. Outside, we were made welcome on the comfortably furnished, shaded deck overlooking Holrood bay and beach, pots of joyful begonias all about. Location is perfect as a base to go to St John's for the day, Cape Spear or even Bay Bulls, or as we did, to poke along the Northern route to Brigus, Bay Roberts' Mad Rocks trails and beyond. Finally, the star of this treasure of an inn was the Owner/host Colleen: a culinary expert and dear lady with the sparkle of Old Newfoundland in her voice and heart. Though we have left A Schooner Inn, it will stay with us forever.
