We stayed for a week in one of the refurbished seafront rooms (718). They've been refurbished to a high standard and are pretty big. The view from our balcony was fantastic and the shower was great too. No bath but that was fine for us. The only negative was the confusing lighting. Lots of switches for groups of lights in the room and it's very easy to switch off the bathroom light accidentally from the bed which isn't the best situation to be in! Food in the buffet restaurants was fairly good but could have been better. I know it's mass catering but the resort is advertised as 5 star so I was expecting a bit more. A lot of the meat dishes were very basic and could have been improved with a good sauce. Of the two buffet restaurants we much preferred the one by the beach, Thalassa. We did have one meal in an a la carte restaurant, the Poseidon, which was very good. Book quickly if you want to eat a la carte though as they do get booked up quickly. The staff were all friendly and helpful which obviously makes the holiday experience much more relaxing. The massage in the spa helped too. That was very nice. On the whole this is a good resort and we wouldn't hesitate to go back. It is very family orientated so it may not suit everyone but we still enjoyed our time there as a couple.

Dear amb9876, Thank you very much for coming to Nana Golden Beach and for your feedback. We are pleased to see, how much you enjoyed your well deserved holidays in our completely renovating "Cretan village" and how much you enjoyed also the views, the spa and the friendliness of our team. We have rooms with bathtubs as well, which we provide expecially for families with smaller chldren. If you prefer a bathtub for your next holidays, please don't hesitate to let us know before and our reception team will do his best to allocate you as desired. Concerning our modern light system in the rooms: Indeed it may be a bit confusing and it takes some time to get used to it. We will advice our colleagues from the bellboy department, who escort our guests to their rooms after arrival, to explain it a bit better to our guests to avoid confusions in future. Thank you as well for your further remarks, which with pleasure we will follow up and which help us to keep on improving. For next season we are already planning to have 2 additional A la Carte restaurants. We hope to welcome you again soon and send sunny regards from Crete, Yours sincerely Nana Golden Beach Hotel Management

We are a couple travelling without children, and self professed ‘holiday snobs’ but also easily pleased. This hotel is nowhere near a 5 star, more like a 3 star in our opinion. Please take heed of the negative recent reviews as we think they are accurate after having visited. Do not go to this hotel unless you are happy to be around LOTS of pre-school children. We did not have one meal when there weren’t screaming kids, even in the a la carte restaurants. The hotel is massively under staffed in all areas. The staff work crazy hours to make up for this and are clearly in need of a break. A lot of the staff were friendly and went above and beyond and others were grumpy and uninterested (not that you could blame them). The hotel rooms are clean and comfortable. Housekeeping staff are spot on and came every day. There are no iron/board in the rooms but apparently you can borrow one from reception. We never bothered. The hair dryer was attached to the inside of a drawer in the bathroom, making it awkward to use. When we arrived the fridge was only stocked with one can of Pepsi and two bottles of water. Housekeeping left two bottles of water daily. A couple of beers would have been nice. The main buffet restaurant was a daily circus. The food was less than average (and we’re not picky eaters). Breakfast was the best meal of the day, but again there were queues for fresh omelettes and fried eggs as generally there was only one member of staff trying to do everything. The only decent lunch option was the salad bar. Dinner choices were even more random. We found the smaller buffet restaurant by the beach to make a bit more sense, but it was generally difficult to make a meal of anything, and we ended up with a plate of nonsense. The pool bar (near to the adult pool) does sandwiches, burgers and snacks most of the day. The one thing they do is amazing waffles with ice cream and chocolate sauce. Another minus point is that there is nowhere other than your sunbed to eat your lunch if you choose this option. The buffet restaurants and pool bars have self service wine and beer taps. The restaurants were rigorous with their times and started cleaning down even if diners were still choosing food. The a la carte restaurants were a nicer experience and the food here was better, but not excellent. They need to double front of house staff here as the wait was long. The staff are clearly overworked and tired which is too stressful for them and not a good experience for diners. They have two front of house staff serving around 100 diners. This is not a criticism of the staff it is a management issue. You can only book 2 a la cartes per week using the hotel App. We managed to do this without much fuss and tried all 4, but the first few days everything was full. One of the highlights of our holiday is eating in nice restaurants, yet here we found ourselves having to eat in the buffet for 10 nights. That was unacceptable to us, and we were unaware of this at the time of booking. On a couple of occasions we walked into Stalis to eat out, just to break up the monotony. There is very little in the way of evening entertainment, although the main lobby bar staff are a show in themselves and good fun. We found the drinks to be good. The local Mythos was good and the staff were happy to make drinks that weren’t on the menu (like margaritas). We mostly stayed around the adult pool. It was generally quiet and relaxing and there were enough sun beds and parasols. However, the toilet was blocked for most of our holiday and on one occasion it was overflowing to the outside areas. The soap dispenser never worked, whether full or not. There was no refreshments available here either but it is only a short walk to the nearest pool to use the toilet or get a drink. The pool did not appear to have been cleaned in the 2 weeks we were there, there was a build up of sand and bits on the bottom, but we rarely ventured in anyway as it was so cold. We highlighted these issues regularly to the staff member at the nearest pool with limited success. Again she worked crazy hours and every day that we were there. However, at the end of my tether I reported this to reception and maintenance arrived in force. The hotel really should think twice before allocating guests with toddlers ground floor rooms around the adult pool. There were regular screaming tantrums from a child being restricted to a terrace (and not allowed near the pool which was right outside their door) and frustrated parents having to go through this daily ritual. Also not relaxing for the adults pool guests. There is a small ‘man made’ beach at the hotel, popular with young families. Otherwise the sea front is rocky and can be accessed by steps. The spa is lovely, and we heard good reports from other guests. You are offered a 10% discount if you book a treatment within your first 48hours. I initially received a treatment that was not of my liking and I gave honest feedback. This was quickly rectified by the manager and I received another treatment free of charge. I had a lovely facial with Georgina. I joined in with yoga, pilates and stretching on a morning with a lovely young lady whose name escapes me. This is well worth doing. From what I saw the young energetic entertainments team never stop and do a great job. We really wanted to love this hotel, but I’m afraid it’s not for us and we won’t be returning. We understand the difficulties Covid has brought, including staffing issues, but the limited staff are doing their very best. In essence don’t call it a hotel 5 star when it isn’t. We had an enjoyable well needed break but we felt that we over paid for what we got.

Dear Mrs. Gina, We are pleased to see, that you liked our completely renovated "Cretan village" with its modern rooms and that you also appreciate the cleanliness. Thank you as well for your praising words concerning our spa. Kindly note, that you have booked a hotel, which in all booking channels is clearly described as a family friendly hotel. During school holidays, we have many guests with elder children, out of school holidays guests with younger children are coming. But also guests without children find quiet places to relax and when they come a bit later dinner, when the kids are on their way to the mini disco, they will hardly find children in the restaurants. Of course we do our best to allocate guests with babies in groundfloor rooms and of course there are ground floor room also nearby the adult only pool. Before allocating guests with babies in higher floor rooms, we prefer to allocate them there, as it's just more convenient for them than having to climb stairs with their children and the according equippment. Maybe an adult only hotel would have been the better option for you. Kindly note as well, that you knew in advance, that our pools are not heated. We never promised anything else, so you can't blame us for the pool temperature in autumn. By the way - our pools are cleaned daily. The staff issues have been several times adressed and explained here. Once again we point out, that this year we have a very special season, which was completely unpredictable. Until very late in spring we did not know, when, how, if and with which guests the season will start - and also not, how many guests from where we can expect. Of course we had bookings, but will they all come or cancel? Will they be allowed to travel and to enter our country? From which date on??? How can you make a good planning for absolutely uncertain times, with very limited suitable and available staff on the market after Covid? Who applies in these times for a job, where he does not even know, when he can start and for long he can stay there? Would you? Or would you prefer a safe and guaranteed job? Until June we rather expected a quite weak seson. But this has changed quickly, after the travel restrictions for British people were eased at the end of June. At the same time, many people who had originally had booked e.g. Turkey or Spain, had to change their travel plans facing the current situation and new restrictions and decided to come to Crete instead. Although this mixed up everything, frankly said we very are grateful for this fact and welcome each single guest with our heartfelt hospitality and we really do what we can for our guests. The whole situation is not their fault. You have seen on your own, how hard our team is working and most guests highly appreciate this. We understand, what people went partly through before coming to wonderful Crete, despite their plans were different. But we kindly ask our guests also to afford some comprehension for our situation and to excuse the inconveniences. We hope to find back to a kind of normality next season. Your further remarks will be followed up within the bounds of our possibilities, although our food normally is praised a lot by our guests and we offer a wide variety to choose from, which caters for all personal tastes and needs and it's absolutely possible to select a proper meal from our dishes at the buffet. Certainly you have seen in our previous answers, that for next year we are planning 2 additional A la Carte restaurants, as this year the request for the A la Carte restaurants has increased a lot compared with other years. Dear Mrs. Gina, it's really sad that we have not met you personal expectations. Whilst we are of course always sorry to read such negative feedback, we do appreciate and realise Nana Golden Beach does not suit everyone. We inform our guests in advance clearly, what they can expect to avoid disappointments, but being a hotel with 500 rooms, we cannot please everybody, although we really try hard to do it. Best regards, Yours sincerely Nana Golden Beach Hotel Management

I have never left a Tripadvisor review (or any other review for that matter), however after a 10 day stay at Nana Golden Beach we though it important to leave one! Please do pay attention to the negative reviews - I wish we had (as opposed to focusing on the positive which we try to do!) & chosen a different hotel. The hotel is not 5*, and my experience echoes a lot of the more negative reviews already written here unfortunately. I don't really understand the 5/5 ratings - I think most of them are unfortunately fake. We have stayed in 5* star hotels all over the world & this simply isn't 5*, an average 4* at best. Good points: - Our room was lovely & spacious. Very clean & serviced with fresh towels daily by a very friendly cleaner lady. - Lovely grounds again clean & tidy - Great location (10 mins walk to town) - which you need for eating out! - Beachfront, with sandy beach & loungers by the rocks on the waters edge which was very peaceful - Standard loungers wars however enough to go around - Had a lovely full body massage by Georgina - The swim up bar is good fun, however this is more due to the other guests than the hotel Bad points - A rather strange check in - reception staff were fairly rude/abrupt & despite checking in online via their website as requested prior to arrival, the check in seemed to last a very long time. It was also demanded (not 'asked') that I paid in full there & then, which I duly did but found a bit aggressive. - You can only book 2 meals in the a la carte over 7 days or 3 over 10. When we however went to the a la carte restaurants, they were half empty. You can book additional spaces if you go & speak to the maitre'd during lunchtime, but there is hardly any availability. Although I wouldn't worry too much as they are all pretty terrible, apart from the Greek restaurant Zorbas which is OK. - The food at the resort in general is awful. You have to queue to get into breakfast, which is the best meal they serve. The lunch options are very poor - slice of luke warm pizza, burger (no salad, dubious meat) & chips, waffles. No a la carte lunch option. An average salad bar. The evening buffet is like a school canteen. The a la carte restaurants are very poor, & it is clear there are no chefs operating in these kitchens. The meals are pre-prepared & brought into the hotel. This is clearly evident at Poseidon, their 'fine dining' option as you can see into the kitchen via a glass plate. The starters were revolting - a can of undressed crab on top of hard, inedible avocado & my husband had beef tarter with a tempura battered poached egg on top - which looked great - but the egg & batter were cold & the beef (which we are aware is supposed to be served cold) resembled cat food. It is clear the kitchen staff (who spent more time on their phones that anything else) didn't actually know how to prepare/warm up the pre-packaged food that was served. The rack of lamb was 4 small lukewarm chops (on their own with no option for sides) & the "t bone steak" was a breaded veal cutlet cut in half - bizarre! There were a lot of tables around us picking at their food & saying amongst themselves how poor their meals were. A couple walked out half way through. The Italian restaurant was also very poor. We ended up skipping a lot of meals & eating out a lot. We actually lost weight on holiday!! - The wine is undrinkable - even for Greek wine! The draught lager is watered down with no other beer option. The branded spirit bottles have clearly been refilled with local spirit. Prosecco served warm in a paper cup. Bottled water is warm & runs out at lunchtime - They are severely understaffed. The staff work hard, although they are all clearly exhausted, disengaged & don't want to be there, which gives a bit of a strange vibe to the hotel. - There is no table service for drinks at all. Ok for during the day round the pool but not really OK for the evening! - There are a LOT of very young children. If you are a couple that don't have kids, do not go to this hotel! There are signs by the pools saying 'NO POO IN THE POOL'......which speaks for itself! - After being told we could have a late check in & confirming this twice, we were told the night before that this actually wasn't possible on the day of our departure. I spoke to the hotel manager who was at the desk at the time of our check out & she wanted feedback from our stay. I was honest with her & although a nice lady, she seemed more interested in telling me I should have informed her about the issues before the last day than listening to what I had to say & that she kept saying that she valued customer feedback but I don't really think she took my comments on board as kept saying these matters were my opinion. She told me of things they are looking to improve next year but these weren't anything highlighted above in my review. She said that they would be adding 2 new a la carte restaurants, but looked through me when I mentioned the lack of quality we had experienced. She explained that they had been hit hard by covid & closed all last year & basically told me that they knew they didn’t have the facilities but needed the money!! It seems even though the hotel say they want customer feedback, when they get it they are very defensive, implying that the negative reviews are wrong - which can also be seen on most other reviews! Despite the negative points, we did have a lovely holiday & would recommend the area itself. Romantic Corner, which is a lovely taverna walking distance from the hotel, that serves fresh authentic Greek food with chilled drinkable wine, I would definitely go back to. After 2 years without a holiday, we were very disappointed with our choice & we won’t be returning to this hotel. We would advise anyone looking to book to think twice before doing so.

Just returned from Nana....our 14th visit! Obviously we love this hotel and were massively impressed by all the renovations to the rooms carried out during the COVID closure...they really are beautiful, definitely 5 star. The main reason we keep going back, apart from the beautiful grounds and the great location, is the wonderful staff. Over the years many of them have become more like ‘friends’. Special mention to Alexandra and Vasilis in the main building and Ana, Maria & Konstantina (Pergola) We love all four A la Cartes but our favourites are Zorba’s run by the hugely entertaining Dimitris and Poseidon run by the AMAZING Panos! One minor criticism, I think the menus in the A la Cartes were much better before the closure and all four seemed to be rather under-staffed....poor Panos and Dimitris were run off their feet! We’ll be back next May, can’t wait!
