I was booked in as part of a trip in April to Svalbard. Due to Coronavirus and UK flight cancellations I’ve had to cancel all my logistics - internal flights, hotel in Oslo, Safari on snowmobile and a wildlife guide. Everyone has been pragmatic and refunded regardless of policy. But not the Coal Miners Cabins. Despite a polite message requesting an exception to the no refund policy they’ve refused to offer a refund or even vouchers for a stay later in the year when the situation improves. At this critical time for businesses, customer experience and loyalty will be key for survival. They’ve even had the audacity having kept my money to suggest they’d welcome me back in the future!! Terrible experience and when I do go back to Svalbard ( hopefully in October) I definitely won’t be using them. If you book (and I’d clearly suggest you don’t) make sure you get a refund policy or they’ll just keep your money if something stops you going.

Due to two months of research in the Arctic, I checked into this hotel last month and left at the end of the month. After leaving, I reported to the hotel that their breakfast stayed the same every day. When I was check in again in March and found that breakfast had different styles to choose from. I never thought that the hotel would respond so quickly to the feedback from the guests. They really took the customer's suggestions seriously. This is how I responded so quickly after I stayed in so many different hotels. Another thing that impressed me most was the staff at the front desk. Each one had a friendly smile, and the service attitude was very good. They could also help my accommodation requirements as much as possible. Because it is difficult to book a hotel during this time, it needs to be divided many times. Booked because I stayed longer and didn't want to change rooms often, I hope they can arrange to stay in the same room, they also try to assist!

Friendly staff (reception, house keeping etc). Cosy reception area. Great food at restaurant. Family room was spacious. We were there for the nature so the location at edge of town was perfect. My kids enjoyed their stay :D

Note, there are several cabin buildings, and they are a very short walk from the reception/restaurant. In winter it can be icy/slippery, just like everywhere else in Svalbard. The town has an excellent supermarket, a beautiful 30 minute walk away in the centre of town. If you want to cook for yourself, the facilities are fine and it makes your trip very affordable. Room was perfect. Shower just across the corridor, and I never had to wait for anyone else. Common area is cosy and inviting. I was there during the blue season, at the very start of the polar night. There's nothing else like it, everything is truly blue. And the blues festival, for such a small place, is well run and full of international talent.
