Booked afternoon tea for our anniversary, made this booking over the phone a week before. I was asked if I wanted the classic tea or celebration. I opted for the celebration. Was told it was all booked I asked if the young man on the other end of the phone wanted my name! I gave him my name but don’t know why I bothered as when we arrived to an empty restaurant with no staff or bar staff. Dirty plates left over from breakfast, dirty mugs left on the bar. After waiting for 15 minutes a member of staff came out of the kitchen, I approached her and told her we were there for the afternoon tea. She returned to the kitchen and four members of staff came out. No booking could be found surprise surprise. The young lady then said if you wait we can do it now for you and it will be ready by 2pm the original time I booked for. The chef then said rather begrudgingly it won’t be ready by then. His attitude was rather off putting so I said we would leave it. Service very poor if I could give no score I would, I will not be returning to this place.

stayed here for 4 nights with coach company.impressed with security at door.three lifts to all floors.room was large & clean with its own balcony & sea view.but found a live human flea on last day in our room.it must have come off the floor.food was good & service was good except on one day .we had cottage pie made with quorn.it had no taste.some of our party left it.the breakfast was good .came down for dinner on last night & there was a wedding party in full swing in the restaurant so we were herded into the bar & lounge area.there were guests queing up for some time for a table& there were delays getting our food.apart from that okay.

We had booked a long weekend here because of my mother in laws 94 birthday there was 5 of us in the party when we arrived the reception area was full of Afghan looking people my wife said what’s going on here one of the women working there which we thought was the manager rather rudely replied to my wife they are residents 3 times we later found out that this hotel was accommodating Afghan refugees from the Southend area but we think the hotel should have informed us what was happening in a hotel we have paid to stop in we might have been against the refugees although on our first day that was our only interaction we feel sorry for them but we think it might have been better for them if the hotel brought them in at night and not put them through crowding the reception area for everyone to state at them we was in room 329 with a terrific view of Southend pier and the amusement park the room is fairly good condition except stains on the carpet and grouting badly stained in the shower although the bathroom did look fairly new when we booked we asked for rooms to be near each other so we can keep an eye on mother in law and we wanted her room to be twin beds when we got our rooms my mother in law wasn’t twin beds so the receptionist changed my mother in law to a twin room which was one end of the third floor while ours was the other end and our other couple was on 4th floor so we complained and the couple on 4th floor ended up 2 doors away from mother in law in room the kettle is too big to fill up with water from the tap in bathroom it won’t fit under tap and talking about sink in bathroom the mastic between the sink edge and and wall is all off colour and the sink plug is non existent you have to put this plug bit in and pull it out when finished not working properly The side light on wall large bulb don’t work the beds are a bit hard it was ok for me but my partner couldn’t sleep properly the pillows are lumpy not very sleepable and scraping around upstairs all night the shower the mastic around it was brown and mucky the actual shower was good and easy to use you cannot open the second door out of the verandah as the top lock is broken beds are made every day and towels changed staff are very helpful and friendly which is a plus when we went down for breakfast at 9.15 there was hardly any hot food and it didn’t get replenished until we complained and got fruit juices and more bread for toast talking about toast it took forever to toast in the machine conveyor so we turned it up to toast browner that worked well you can ask for gluten free bread or fried eggs if you fancy as the egg that is available is scrambled if you watch tv in morning around 8am the tv tends to be pixelated then freeze must have a supply problem not good if your watching something you get into we also noticed the water waste system is at fault the water in basin takes forever to go down and if you run water bits come back up into the sink and we also found water seeps from under the shower We decided to give my elderly mother in law a cream tea in the hotel we purchased all the items up the road in marks and spencer and took over 3 tables in the bar room the bar staff were so helpful with plates and cutlery to help make sure our 94 year old mother in law had a nice cream tea we decided to have a few last night drinks in the bar it was fairly quite when we arrived and we ordered our drinks while talking to the bar staff the person in charge of the bar seemed to be Adrienne who has had experience in the bar trade and knew a lot about cocktails we got onto the subject of pornstar martini and it’s contents even so we were treated to a taste of one very tasty and viewing the hard work of her and her bar staff without being fazed was a joy and we enjoyed our drinks n chats on the day of my mother in laws birthday breakfast one of the members of staff morgan was very helpful and pleasant even arranged for a little cake and candle and sang happy birthday To sum up we paid out a lot of money to celebrate my mother in laws birthday if we hadn’t spent so much money to stop in a place that needs to be seriously upgraded we would have gone elsewhere the only godsend was the staff were pleasant and helpful
