We spent one night at the Camelia, all Covid 19 precautions were in place and adhered to. It was lovely to have a room upgrade to a superior twin room with a walk in shower. The room was scrupulously clean with lots of storage space and 2 comfy beds. All the staff were courteous and pleasant, especially the young man who served us dinner in the evening. The dining area in the bar was not too crowded even though the football was on. The food was excellent and not overpriced, as the young man said, they have a very talented chef. We sat outside after and watched the sun go down over the beach, it was a very comfortable and relaxing stay.

My wife and I booked a room and a meal in your hotel on the 19/06/2021, for our wedding anniversary, I received a phone call on the 17/06/2021 for my card details, which I gave over the phone, I was told to book the room online as a complimentary breakfast was included but only if I booked online. On arrival, we sat down and had drinks, after my third drink I went to check-in, the young lady asked me to wait and she went to get another waitress, on her return the girl asked me my details, name, etc, which I confirmed, she then asked me for my card, I explained that I had already given my card details over the phone on the Thursday and I didn’t have it with me, but she insisted that she could not book me in without my debit card, I said not a problem and counted the £140 for the room out in cash, she then asked if we were having breakfast? Which I replied I was told we had a complimentary breakfast, apparently not, I only had a room only booking, nowhere on the booking page did I see a box that said breakfast, but anyway, I asked her how much was the total, £165, so I added another £25, she then asked me for my driving license, I told her that I didn’t carry my license with me, her reply was “well I can’t book you in then”, I said that the situation was ridiculous, her reply then astounded me, “there are other hotels you know”, my reply was “well I will go and speak to my wife to see what she wants to do” As I was speaking to my wife the waitress appeared by our table and said she thought I was coming back, I replied I was speaking to my wife to see what she wanted to do, then I could not believe what came out of her mouth, she accused ME of being rude to her and upsetting her! I explained I was not the one who told me to go to another hotel and I was talking to my wife and did not want to talk to her anymore, she then said she would go and get the owner. Before he arrived the barman slapped the drinks bill on the table and said “pay the bill and go” When the owner arrived I explained my version of what happened and he said that he could have sorted the whole mess out, to which my wife replied “it's a bit late now as your barman has asked us to pay the bill and go” He apologized for the whole mess but by this time we had both had enough. Your reply to my email was basically to accuse me of being rude and lying, not a good way to run a business, i wished i could give it no stars1

Thank you for your comments. We are sorry that you were unable to stay with us, but in common with all other hotels and without exception, we will not accept guests who do not provide a valid debit/credit card as security and, when paying with cash, the requisite photo ID. The Managers on duty followed procedure and dealt with this situation in accordance with our terms and conditions. Your comments have been addressed in full by private email, prior to this posting.

Great stay as usual stayed here many times over the years. Loved the new bar/ restaurant set up. Lovely food and staff very friendly and helpful. In a good position for the beach and town. It is the only hotel we ever stay it when we have a quick break in Southend.

Second stay at The Camelia, Thorpe Bay. Seaview room, all facilities covered.and lovely shower and bathroom. Very comfortable and relaxing room. Dinner was delicious and the vegetarian full breakfast was excellent. Piping hot and cooked to perfection. The Camelia has made excellent changes since our October 2020 visit. They have made an internal conversion and now have a really lovely dining room with patio doors opening to the terrace. They also now have a fabulous bar area which has additional tables for dining. The colour scheme and decor is fabulous. The staff are so friendly and welcoming. We will definitely pay a third visit to this charming stylish hotel.

We had a table booked for my sisters birthday this afternoon, I have to say this was the best afternoon tea I have had in years. From the sandwiches to the beautiful cakes and wonderful scones it was excellent. We were made very welcome by the staff and shown to a very large round table. The staff were very attentive but not in your face. Overall a lovely afternoon spent with family. Thank you to Kirsty and her colleagues.
