Great Breakfast and dog friendly. However rooms very basic, need updating, bathroom in poor state. Good tea facilities in room. No curtains just a blind. Friendly and helpful staff, could of been a little more informative on check in………..

Cannot comment on the hotel itself but would warn anyone who is planning to stay here about the parking. Was slapped with a parking fine (long story but no fault of ours) and having spoken to the very unhelpful manager was told that it’s not the ‘hotel’s problem’. It was one of the hotel staff that told us it ‘was sorted’ . Be warned!

I have honestly never seen a hotel/restaurant as good as this. Firstly the toilets were lovely and smelt amazing there was mirrors everywhere, the food was amazing tasted lovely. Second the decor was beautiful and the staff were lovely they deserve the world and my sister lost her tooth and they were lovely and gave her tissues and everything. We ordered our drinks and 1 minute later they came out and the service was amazing they came almost all of the time to check on us which was so sweet and when we walked in the smell was amazing and they gave us little tickets which were beautiful. And just quickly I want to say thank you to all of the lovely staff there and I definitely recommend. Thank you

Stayed just one night on 18 Marach as we were joining friends on the RAT train. The hotel was extremely convenient for the railway station and just a short walk to the High Street with lots of bars, cafes, independent shops. We were in room 17 and our friends next door in room 18 of this beautiful and “quirky” hotel. Our room overlooked the front of the building and car park, was a decent size, very clean, light and airy with a double bed plus a single, plenty of storage (not that we needed it for one night) and tea & coffee making facilities. The bed was extremely comfortable, and I had an excellent night’s sleep despite the yellow light from the car park outside shining in our room. The bathroom had a rather dated suite with shower over the bath but had everything we needed and plenty of good sized, good quality towels and liquid soap and shower gel provided in dispensers. The reception and bar staff were friendly helpful and friendly, and we would definitely return if we take another trip on the RAT train in future.

Not a bad hotel as long as you get the right room. It seems that some are much better than others. Don't let them put you in room 11 which is awful. The carpet is disgusting and the whole room needs refurbishing. And it is very small. We complained and were moved. The rooms in the newer part of the hotel (including rooms 3 and 4) are very spacious and pretty good. There is a marked contrast. Plenty of parking and the bar is good. Convenient for the town. The bar stays open for residents.

All in all a very comfortable stay with friendly staff, decent room, good rates and dog friendly. There is a kettle in the cupboard I found in the morning. Nide location and rear gardens are really nice.

Enjoyed our stay here over Christmas, bedroom and bathroom were large, clean and comfortable, the couches a little worn but the bed was excellent. Loved the big bath although would have enjoyed more if not for a shortage of hot water in the evening (tip - run hot first and then cold if you need). Staff were friendly and helpful through out and enjoyed our full English breakfast. NB the room had a fireplace but no fire so not sure if working.

We booked Christmas lunch here.it was not cheap at £75 per head. So we're expecting a real Christmassy treat. Sadly we were hugely disappointed. The staff were super stressed and no one wished us a merry Christmas. We had a small 2 person table for 3 adults , consequently not a comfortable dining experience. The room was dark with poor decorations therefore not enhancing the Christmas feel. Main course was ok,but starter and main course lacked the wow factor we were expecting.the wait between starter and main was 45 minutes !! The only redeeming factor was a good bottle of red wine polished off during the 45 minute wait. I feel very sad that we spent so much on what could have been such a special treat. I would avoid .

The smell of stale smoke from the dirty old carpet was overpowering. The carpet was also half- eaten and threadbare. The windows were rotting and not double glazed. The chair was also threadbare and there was mould behind the taps in the bath. We would not leave our shoes or bags on the floor or on the chair out of fear of them being eaten by whatever creature is destroying the disgusting smelly carpet, and we put towels down on the floor to walk on it. Unfortunately everywhere was fully booked due to the train strike and Real Ale Train otherwise we would have left straight away. We were charged £119 for this disgusting room so I asked for a refund, but that was a week ago now and still no refund has materialised. This hotel was probably beautiful many decades ago as the building itself has some lovely features but the room we stayed in was the worst I have ever seen and was outrageously over-priced.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Alton House Hotel. We stayed 9 nights. We were in Alton doing family research. Our room was large. We actually had 2 rooms, which was great so we could put our luggage in the second room out of the way. Bathroom was a little small and had no real space to put personal items as well as towels. We made do. The shower stall was large, but only had a half screen, therefore the floor was continually wet. The staff were wonderful. Very friendly and helpful. I had some food sensitivity issues and they were all aware, and they made sure everything went smoothly. There is no elevator as this is an historic house. We made several trips upstairs to take our luggage up to our room (we were on a long trip within 2 climate zones and had a lot of luggage). However there were staff to help if we wanted their help. Great location for us. We didn't have to drive in town. We left our car in the parking lot and walked everywhere, unless we wanted to go out of town. We would definitely stay here again if we are back in Alton. So happy with everything about our stay here.
