One night here was too long! I booked a double room but on arrival the hotel had changed to a twin. As I stood in reception someone was sent to check if the room was ok, not a good sign!! The reception area was full of leaves and looked in need of a serious update After a hard day at... More

We got a good feeling for this hotel, the staff were friendly and helpful and you could easily see that in its heyday, it would have been something else, unfortunately its on a main road not surrounded by its own gardens which would have helped it. There is a lovely park out the back, a very large (public) car park... More

The staff on reception were ever so welcoming. I see others' reviews and feel a bit sorry for the Royal Hotel. It's due to be refurbished soon so will lose the buddleia in the roof and the plants creeping through the cracks in the balconies. It was a good location for walking to the fine old castle. Although the rooms... More

Pleasant, friendly staff. Mouldy shower, hard and squeaky beds, broken window and sash, no soundproofing to floor above. Don't mind faded glory but not possible to sleep well. The advertised rate was for a premium hotel room and the rate we paid would have bought a decent modern room in a number of local chains.

Firstly, I would like to thank the staff for their trouble during our stay, they do their very best to please. Also the breakfast was very good and the service excellent. The problem is the whole hotel is in desperate need of refurbishment. It’s a grade two listed building, and the staff told me that after many years they now... More

Stayed in this place last night and it was up there with one of the worst . I will start with the tv , haven't seen a back box on a tv for a few years now so you can imagine the shock on my face when I seen it , I nearly phoned reception to ask what it was.... More

Positives: Staff are very friendly and welcoming. Bar is reasonably cheap (coke and a pint of peroni was around a fiver) Location is great for town and motorway links Negatives (there is a lot unfortunately): Parking is free however they dont explain when you book that you need to get a parking permit from reception straight away as you park... My wife and I had a large room with double and single bed overlooking the road and jet garage. We wondered about the traffic noise but this was surprisingly quiet enabling a good night's sleep. The sash wondows were operational but when opened showed the blistering paint and bits of putty on the sills, but we did have fresh air... More

Without wanting to be cruel or slanderous, which I could, this is the fairest review possible. The poor old hotel from the outside and lobby looks grand and a throwback to its days of glory, I'm sure. As for inside, my room was dirty, the 14inch 1990's tv only showed half a screen(7inch) the bathroom was very tired, in fact... More

In keeping with the other reviewers, this place is a sleeping giant and has bags of potential but needs some TLC. Attended as part of a large group, sojourned to the bar where to be polite the quality of some of the refreshments were poor initially but full credit to Conor the barman who sorted everything out and kept smiling...
