We always come to eat at the Valiant Soldier when staying in Exmoor. The food is consistently good and the staff are friendly. It’s also great that dogs are welcome. We ate here on Monday night - 17 May 2021 - and were pleased to find that everything was still fantastic. We had excellent cod and chips, a gorgeous burger and the chilli con carne, all really good.

Following a walk over Tarr bridge and around Barle waters we booked ourselves a table in to the valiant for an evening meal. Although the barman was very busy on our arrival, we were greeted by a staff member who showed us to our table. A couple of pints and gin and tonics were followed by a great dinner, the valiant burger and the steak sizzler were well deserved after a hearty walk. Staff very welcoming, food fresh and hot.

Good food, friendly service and a lovely landlord who showed us the skittle alley which was nice as we had never seen one before and we loved hearing a little about its history. Vegetarians well catered for and plenty of it. Nice to have a pub meal not packed out with a huge pile of chips.

We visited with quite a large group. The service was average at best. The food was variable in quality , 2 out of the 4 steaks ordered were very very poor , pie was fair , halloumi was excellent. Cheese board had just 2 cheeses, one enormous chunk of mild cheddar and a slice of stilton. The thing that spoiled a nice night the most was the rude manager , pretty much everything was too much trouble for him.

Stayed just down the road, but ate there every night for a week. The service was excellent, with a good varied menu. Good selection of ale. Genuine old pub built early 1800s low beams and lovely atmosphere.
