Sat in the bar area, restaurant full therefore you should book. Very nice food, helpful staff, very busy, too expensive but I think restaurant prices everywhere are through the roof. Would have liked dessert and coffee but we had already had to wait a very long time for our main courses, so we skipped it. Not the staffs fault as senior management need to employ more. Would definitely visit again as service was friendly and the food was good.
Booked a table in the restaurant for 4 adults and one child for a Sunday lunch. On arrival we were seated in the bar area between two external doors. This area was full of families with young children and dogs. As a result despite freezing conditions there was a constant procession of children going in and out of the doors and leaving the doors open so they could get back in as it was a fire exit door which couldn’t be opened from the outside. My wife went and spoke to the manager who said there was nothing he could do (great customer service). Our expectation was that the management would step in to resolve the situation. Our experience of our visit was an incredibly negative one so therefore cannot recommend this restaurant to anyone else
Not sure why we received the reception we did, but we did. There were 12 of us including 2 children who decided to come down on Christmas Eve at 6 pm for a quick drink. We chose the Bel & Dragon because our Christmas host had recently moved into the area and this was the closest. We were not greeted in a way that should reflect a place of hospitality. Four of us had made our way to the bar while the rest of the group were a little way behind, and as we were ordering our drinks, a staff member came up and in an obviously annoyed tone, we had this interaction: Staff Member: “You can’t stay here” Us: “I’m sorry?” SM: “You can’t stay here, we are too busy, we are fully booked, and there is nowhere for you to sit” Us: “…Can we not just stand at the bar?” After a slight pause, “...Fine. If you want to” In a tone that suggested this was anything but fine, then off he went. So, after the remaining group came through to the bar, they told us they also had a very cold, curt, rude reception basically telling them that they couldn’t stay due to there not being anywhere to sit. A few members of our group were now saying how uncomfortable they felt being there and how unwelcome we were, and they were right, it was palpable. From our side, yes, we were a large group on Christmas Eve with no reservations, and totally understand if having us come down on this day, at this time, was inconvenient. What we don’t understand is the rude, disrespectful, arrogant manner in which they interreacted with us to let us know how inconvenient it was for them. Not a single apology from their side. A very simple, “We are very sorry but…”, with even the slightest bit of sympathy, we would have just left and not the feel the need to leave a bad review. We get that this was Christmas Eve for you, but it was also Christmas Eve for us and this soured our evening. I also want to point out that at this stage, at 6 pm, they may have been fully booked, but they were not yet busy. (Although I get that they may very well have been preparing for the busiest part of the evening). But at this stage, there were half the tables attended to, and 2 people at the bar. I don’t think they even knew that we intended to stay only for a single drink as they hadn’t bothered to ask about our intentions. We obviously chose to leave, and as we did a group of people in the seating area close to the front entrance kindly offered us their seats as they were about to depart. We politely declined and made our way to the Duke of Cambridge down the road, where they were far busier but far more welcoming. So no, based on this experience, we wouldn't recommend and certainly won't be going back.…
Awful dining experience on Christmas Eve. 6:15 table and were chasing our main courses at 8:15. Too late for young children. Found manager unhelpful. Other staff really trying to compensate on a really busy evening. So sorry this establishment seems have gone downhill since opening several years ago.
My friends and I had a last minute stay at The Bel & Dragon and it was marvellous. We’d booked dinner at our usual pub just five minutes away so regrettably didn’t try the evening menu. We are going back soon though and will be dining there. Our rooms were lovely, we all loved the atmosphere throughout the inn and staff were extremely helpful. The inclusive breakfast was excellent Looking forward to our return in March
What can I say about this place. Food is really very good, however we had to get the young waitress staff off their mobile phones and stop yapping with each other to take our order. We stayed as a wedding party on a Thursday and Friday. We booked and paid in advance for two rooms (Darcy & Price). Our room was clean and tidy, however early October it was cold during the night and the wafer thin 1 tog quilt is just not enough. No extra blankets provided so we had to resort to draping our coats over the bed. Heating wasn't on. A travel kettle with a 60cm flex that could only be plugged into a floor socket, c'mon for goodness sake its 2022 and this shouldn't be the case. Water pressure is so low I thought I was in the Highlands. Our son and his partner arrived late Thursday so only time to drop off luggage (Price Room) before dashing down to dinner till late. Friday, day of the wedding was a bit manic and we were out at 11.30 to get to Millbridge Court. Returning late Friday at 23.30 my sons room had not been serviced, nor was any tea/coffee items replenished. Worst still it was the first time we noticed all the damp oozing through the walls and in one corner water was trickling down the walls with a clear smell of damp. We had a small bar bill to pay on our leaving on the Saturday morning so I raised the issue of the damp room and leaking roof along with a few other things. I was astonished to hear that the day manager was aware of the damp in the room and said we should have raised the issue on arrival and they would have changed our room. No.. they should not even be renting this room in this state. No waiver of the small bar bill was offered as a compensation, hence this poor review. So my advice in staying at the Bel & Dragon, Churt is when booking make sure you specifically request not to be given Price Room. There is an annexe also in the car park which when you book a room the location of the room is not told to you. The annex looks like an old garage workshop not connected to the main building which completely looses the appeal of staying here as you have to walk down the street through the car park so again make sure you request a room in the Main building. If not then maybe look somewhere else. The two stars is for the food, it would have been three if it were not for the mobile phone issue. My feeling is their emphasis is only on the food side, however the resturaunt was extremely quiet. Would not visit again.…
Food was good, but had no atmosphere. When we arrived at 7.30 a few tables were busy by 8.30 we were the only ones there. By 9.30pm we started to feel pressure to wrap things up and leave. By 10pm it was very clear that it was time for us to leave. Very disappointing especially on a Friday night. I’m amazed that it’s still in business. Won’t be returning.
Upon arrival the frontage and building look run down and dirty with cigarette butts and litter strewn by the immediate entrance.. When entering the premises the front mat is also filthy. Restaurant is aesthetically pleasing but clearly in need of a deep clean, dirty tables, skirting boards and many very badly stained chairs being used. Staff are clearly inexperienced and need training. They were not attentive and kept disappearing. In today's competitive market there are much better choices in the area. Fullers Management need to take an interest in this property as everything appeared very lackadaisical and dirty, the complete opposite to the Odihm branch.
I live less that 2 miles away and really want to like the Bel and Dragon but it’s just not that great. We had a late booking on a Sat PM and we’re reminded when we arrived at 830 that the kitchen closes at 9. Everything seemed a bit rushed here forward, staff inattentive throughout but pleasant. Food was all very average. Veggie lasagne looked awful, tasted better. Pork belly was poor, Cote du beouf was ok. Restaurant was over half empty on a Friday and it lacks any warmth or character. Better places locally to spend your cash
What a lovely place to come for lunch, cosy corners and seating areas in the bar and very welcoming to dogs, treats and water readily available. Nice friendly helpful staff. We had a delicious lunch, and as a couple of old fogeys with small appetites we were able to select from the children's menu with no problem at all. We'll be back!
